December 2009

On 7 Nov I was invited to the Inauguration and Blessing of the Wild Orchid Lagoon, the latest addition to the hotel offerings in Angeles City. Darn, I am sitting here trying to figure out how to write this up properly. OK, look, the Lagoon is part of the Wild Orchid group and does share the grounds of the Wild Orchid as well as the booking desk, restaurant, etc., yet it is separate as it has its own corporate identity. Now that I got past that let me say I was impressed, very much so. Man, the pool and its Island bar is great and imagine, you now have access to two pools. It is beautifully laid out. I started this month's column off with the photo to the left because I am damn proud of that shot. You have to understand that I am not all that good as a photographer and I take all the pictures you see in this column. But I happened to take this shot from the balcony of the first floor room I was occupying as night fell and there was just enough light left to take this picture. I was surprised that it came out so well. It gives you an idea of how one can have a very romantic evening in a perfect setting right in the middle of the entertainment area. You might not have a beach view but who the hell needs a bunch of sand getting in your trunks anyway. The first floor rooms with the balcony access to the pool will cost you P4,500 a night and the 2nd floor rooms are P4,000, that is less than one hundred US a night. I thought the rooms were large and comfortable and I particularly like the glass enclosed shower which allows enough room for three to four to shower at the same time. Now, this inspires my imagination to go into overdrive. I had only one suggestion for the management and that came about because of my age and being a bit crippled. I thought it would be nice to have a railing installed in the shower and one by the toilet to allow a hand hold for cripples like me. OK already, I know you young guys are not concerned by that but the Lagoon with its location and beautiful landscaping/pool will attract some older guests and some may not be all that mobile. Plus, even you young guys might experiment with some positions in the shower with a guest or two that finding a hand rail to hang onto might be a welcome addition. Later on in the column I will add a few more pictures of the folks attending the 7 Nov event and I must say that it appeared that all attendees were quite impressed with the finished product. You can book your reservations through the Wild Orchid website.

Oh happy days. We are now in December, a time when everybody is happy, except maybe those Americans that are part of the 10.2% unemployed but not to worry, Obama will get around to you sometime after he finishes all his partying. Meanwhile, be happy and help those that need your help. There is always room for a bit of happiness and humor. Forget the economic calamity facing America, forget the weakening dollar, forget the fact that three US Navy Seals are facing court-martial action for capturing the alleged mastermind (Ahmed Hashim Abed) behind the torture killing of four Blackwater USA security guards in Fallujah in 2004. You remember that don't you? That is when a bunch of asshole Muslim terrorists hanged two of the men they killed and mutilated on a bridge over the Euphates river for the world press to photograph. It took from 2004 to Sept this year for these dedicated Seal members to capture Ahmed but shame on them, somehow, Ahmed claims he was punched by his captors and as proof of his abuse, he displayed a bloody lip. For this, our political correct weak assed Naval leaders are now bringing criminal charges against three men who should be considered heroes. Lets forget that we have a jerk off US Attorney, Eric Holder, that is so proud of himself for deciding to bring Muslim terrorists to New York to face our US Justice system and give them all the rights of US citizens. Lets forget that the ACLU and so many idiots in the US want to eliminate Christmas because it offends Atheists, Muslims and other groups. Lets forget all that and much more and be happy during this Christmas season. Here, let me be offensive to one and all Muslims and many others, MERRY CHRISTMAS, MERRY CHRISTMAS, MERRY CHRISTMAS. If that offends anyone reading this column, take note, I don't give a shit! Cherry's Club

Hi Harry, Last night I was bar hoppin and poked my head into most of the bars on Fields. Every bar let me walk around inside and take a few photos of the girls except Carousel, Champagne, and Shooterz. They said no photos!!! Besides the fact that their dancers were ugly what's wrong with their management? In some bars the girls were falling all over each other trying to get in the shot. Some just loved flashing for me. One girl started stripping for me. She got down to her panties before the Mamasan stepped in and said ok that's enough. Angel Witch and Tropix were the best. The girls were beautiful and very friendly. Ditto for the managers and mamasans. I'll know what bars I'll be avoiding in the future. Dave M. (Dave, It is becoming harder and harder for even me to take photos in the bars. There are too many pictures making their way to the internet that put the bars in a bad light and some ladies are protesting because they are afraid their family members or boyfriends who are sending them money will see their picture. I try to get the permission of the managers or owners beforehand and many know that I will not put any X rated pictures in my column. Welcome to the internet age where no one can be trusted. Shooterz is a good bar, with or without pictures.)

Your Las Vegas sources are rather confused. Seafood City already exists and I have driven past it myself. It's address is: 3890 S Maryland Pkwy, Las Vegas, NV 89119,+1 702-733-7813. Therefore it is not on the strip, nor does it have anything to do with MGM, but on the east side of Maryland Parkway just north of the first wash north of Flamingo Road. Get this now it doesn't just have a Chow King but also a Jollibee and a Red Ribbon! (You might remember there is a rather famous deli in the south end of the parking lot of this same complex, called Jason's Deli, 3910 S Maryland Pkwy, Las Vegas - +1 702-893-9799.), Kevin Shenk (Thank you Kevin. I am not all that interested in Chow King or Jollibee when in Vegas but, oh, how I miss that Jason's Deli, one of my favorite places to eat lunch)

Subject: A Little Jim Anderson Philosophy on Iraq and Afghanistan (Jim is a retired US Air Force Chief Master Sergeant)
Not sure what our mission is in both places but I keep hearing that the overall goal is to train the Police and Military so that they can take over. If I got my facts correct, we have been in a training mode in Iraq for six years and 8 years in Afghanistan. We were training the Afghanistan folks before that to fight the Russians. How much training do they need?? I believe we only spend about 25 weeks to train Marines (Boot Camp and AIT) before we send them to fight in either place. What bullshit are we being fed now to justify our presence there? This sounds like Vietnam all over again. To justify Vietnam the "song" was, 'if communism takes over Vietnam it would spread throughout Asia and change our way of life. Well, the Communists eventually took over and now we are friends and trading partners. I got sick to my stomach when I read an article a while back about the Marine Patrol in Afghanistan that was ambushed and when they called for air support they were denied because of they might harm civilians. I believe they are all civilians. We are not fighting an organized uniformed military. How do we tell who is who?? I strongly support our Fighting Men and Women, however, I'm confused about what we are currently doing ----- Now I feel better!! (Jim, I am sure that there are many people in England, Australia, Canada and other countries that are equally confused. I do not see any end in sight or a continued justification for the money being spent and the lives being lost in trying to help a people that do not want to be helped. The religious differences in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan will never allow these people to work together to form a Democratic society. The only success story in Iraq is the way the Kurds have broken away and developed a sensible regime in their area of dominance. Again, the big problem in Iraq and Afghanistan is that, no matter how many more troops we put in there our liberal, weak assed political leaders in the States will not allow our military to do their job properly. That, sir, is the mirror image of what happened in Vietnam. Regretfully, our politicians and many American citizens have never learned the lessons of Vietnam. Today, in Vietnam the government is unified and their leaders are working hard to bring stability and wealth to their country, whereas in Iraq and Afghanistan the present governments and the people only want to fight each other for power and to destroy those who have different religious beliefs and they are all corrupt as hell.)

Smile Make OverMr Harry; I was sitting outside the McDonald's today, Nov 17, around 10:30 or so. A man with a day or so beard comes over and asks if any of us are Americans and if we live here. Then he says he lost his passport and needs $20.00 to get to Manila. That's when I told him he was a scammer. he said, "What's that?" Then I told him to get away and he left. I believe I read about him in your fine monthly newsletter before. From what we could come up with, he wasn't American, but a Pinoy. There were three of us there. Gary fm Montana, Jimmy fm Australia and me fm Pittsburgh. Maybe you can include another scam warning about this in the December issue. Dave in Dau (I am happy to pass on your warning Dave. Any mall in the Philippines tends to attract some unsavory characters. Because of so many foreigners living in the AC area the SM Mall will definitely attract a higher percentage of pickpockets and scammers. One just has to use common sense and due caution as they enjoy the ambience of the SM Mall. I go there quite often and thoroughly enjoy the place but I am very conscious of my wallet and put it in my side pocket where I can keep my hand on it. By the way, for the record, I like the SM Mall more than the new Marquee Mall but the supermarket at the Marquee gets high praise from me and many others. The parking at Marquee Mall sucks and whatever you do, do not try to drive in or out of the place during the 5 to 6:30 PM rush hour. For happy affordable shopping stick with SM Mall, it is more fun and generally, a pretty safe place to go. In comparison, the Marquee is dull.)

Hi Harry, A quick note to thank you for your column which I have been reading for over three years now. Whether in Angeles or not it makes great reading and of course much is applicable to other parts of the Philippines. Im a kiwi from new zealand and have been with my partner Maricar for almost 4 years now who is originally from Cebu City where we travel to frequently (never experienced any problem with Cebu Pacific by the way..fingers crossed!) We hope to make it up your way around Feb 2010 and who knows may well catch if only for a beer and yarn and im told the buko pie is good up there! Keep up the great column, Best Wishes, Marc (thanks for writing Marc. Stop by my stable when you get here so I can get a picture of you and Maricar. I hear that Cebu women look pretty good. I will ask the Mrs. where you can buy a good buko pie).

I received this from Ron Nethercutt and will send my own card, but not sure I can be polite: Want to have some fun this CHRISTMAS? Send the ACLU a CHRISTMAS CARD this year. As they are working so very hard to get rid of the CHRISTMAS part of this holiday, we should all send them a nice, CHRISTIAN card to brighten up their dark, sad, little world.. Make sure it says "Merry Christmas" on it. Here's the address, just don't be rude or crude. (It's not the Christian way, you know.) ACLU 125 Broad Street,18th Floor New York , NY 10004. Two tons of Christmas cards would freeze their operations because they wouldn't know if any were regular mail containing contributions. So spend 44 cents and tell the ACLU to leave Christmas alone. Also tell them that there is no such thing as a " Holiday Tree". . . It's always been called a CHRISTMAS TREE!

TIDBITS

Campbell's Beach ResortHey Harry, a few comments about our current political environment in the US. Yea, just a bunch of bullshit. This is the agenda I want:

  1. Legalize Marijuana
  2. Make English the national language
  3. Amnesty for those who pass a standard High School level WRITTEN & SPOKEN english test
  4. Amnesty applicants are given a two year temporary WORK VISA while a back ground check is conducted
  5. Pay for the amnesty program from the taxes charged on the sale of marijuana (where do you think marijuana comes from?)
  6. 25% to 50% of the marijuana workers are amnesty individuals with their work visas and are at least 21 of years of age.

Twelve states already have medicinal use of marijuana and more are to follow. The Federal government no longer prosecutes growers in those States that are recognized by the State to grow the plant. 33% of the prison population are from those who have been caught smoking pot illegally or growing which incurs additional tax dollars to house them in our prisons. This takes away room from the more HIGH TIER criminals. Let's stop this bullshit game and either make alcohol and tobacco illegal or make some sense of this and legalize pot but make it into a constructive passage that makes sense across the board! Jim from Gilbert, Arizona (somehow I get the feeling that this guy likes to smoke a bit of weed once in a while. I read that years ago one could buy cocaine over the counter in drug stores and of course, the original coca cola had a bit of "coke" in it. Never-the-less, drug addiction is a pretty serious subject world over and I am not really convinced that legalization of marijuana is the right step to take. Personally, I'd rather see legalization of prostitution first. I would feel better jumping the bones of some sexy lady if I knew my payment was being taxed and I was doing my part in helping the American economy. Imagine, Wal-Mart could add a section at the back of their stores for the guys to chill out while the ladies do the shopping. Women would never have to beg their men to go shopping with them. How about a nice real Thai Massage with all the works after a hard day of shopping? The men would all be so happy that they would not worry about the shopping bill. So, Jim, get on the bandwagon, push for legalization of prostitution, even our politicians would welcome such a bill so they would not have to lie about their romantic diversions)

Our Congressmen and women hard at work???? Nothing else needs to be said. This is one of their three work weeks that we all pay for. I am ready to start from the beginning by voting out all elected officials and not letting any of them stay in office for more than two terms. No more lifelong healthcare, retirement, voting in their own pay raises, taking perks on our taxes, etc. House Minority Leader Lawrence F. Cafero Jr., R-Norwalk, pictured standing, far right, speaks while colleagues Rep. Barbara Lambert, D-Milford and Rep. Jack F. Hennessy, D-Bridgeport, play solitaire Monday night as the House convened to vote on a new budget. (AP). The guy sitting in the row in front of these two... he's on Facebook, and the guy behind Hennessy is checking out the baseball scores. These are the folks that couldn't get the budget out by Oct. 1, Seriously!!! So, we've got a 30 day budget extension. Well, guess what, 30 days from now we will be in the same boat. I guess this makes it easy for the news reporters as all they have to do is recycle the same headlines from this week and from 2 years ago. And these yo-yos will still be playing SOLITAIRE!!! .....And they tell us they have read a 2000 page healthcare bill.... really! (Sent by Richard L. Rehm, Las Vegas - Yes Richard, there are a lot of these do nothings that have to be voted out of office)

Last month an Australian tourist staying at my stable related that he was able to take a flight from Taiwan to the Manila International Airport and had planned to take a Victory liner to Angeles City. But, he had read on the internet about Zest Airlines and their 2 PM flight to Clark for only P350. He decided to take the free shuttle to the domestic airport and catch the 2 PM flight. As it turned out he was the only passenger on this nice Airbus 320 and the take off was as scheduled. He was the only passenger and never had a chance to unbuckle his seat belt as they landed at Clark at 2:20 PM. The arrival terminal terminal was so quiet that he had to remind someone that he had a bag on the plane that had to be unloaded. Can you imagine the cost and time difference if he had taken the Victory Liner or had a car service pick him up? Oh, you have to add a P200 terminal fee but the taxi ride from Clark Terminal to my stable cost him P350 and another 20 minute ride. I think if one can arrange their schedule to arrive in Manila to catch that Zest flight to Clark it is one damn good deal. Food and drinks are not served (smile).

As reported by the BBC on 9 Nov 09: Teacher beheaded in the Philippines: Police in the southern Philippines say the severed head of a kidnapped schoolteacher has been found in a bag at a petrol station. Gabriel Canizares was abducted by Abu Sayyaf militants three weeks ago. His body is still missing. He was traveling with colleagues on the island of Jolo when he was seized. The militants had demanded a ransom equivalent to $42,000 (£25,000; 28,000 euros) for Mr Canizares, which his family refused to pay. Education Secretary Jesli Lapus expressed shock at the teacher's killing, saying six other teachers who had been kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf earlier this year had all been released despite threats to behead them. He said his department was at a loss as to how to ensure security for public schoolteachers in high-risk areas, and feared that the kidnappings would discourage others from teaching underprivileged youths in Muslim areas. "We shall make them pay for the enormity of this savagery," President Gloria Arroyo's spokeswoman Lorelei Fajardo said in a statement after Mr Canizares' head was found. She said Mrs Arroyo had ordered "punitive action" to "put an end to the Abu Sayyaf group's heinous and inhumane atrocities". (This I will believe when I see it. This is not the first time these Muslim "gangsters" have done something like this)

"The people of Jolo are condemning this dastardly act," Jolo municipal mayor Hussin Amin said in a television interview aired in Manila. The beheading came three days before a visit to Manila by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, when security issues are expected to be a key topic. Abu Sayyaf has been blamed for many of the country's worst terrorist attacks, including the firebombing of a ferry in Manila Bay that claimed more than 100 lives in 2005, and the abduction of American tourists in 2001. A land mine explosion under a military convoy carrying American troops on 29 September killed two US Army Special Forces soldiers - the first US military deaths in the southern Philippines in seven years. (That is true and the only thing that was said by the Philippine politicians was that "oh, we have to review the VFA agreement - in other words they were not all that concerned about two Americans being killed who were on their way to help build some schools.) About 600 US troops are currently stationed in the south for training and humanitarian missions, but are barred by Philippine law from engaging in direct combat. (And as usual, their presence is not appreciated very much). (Folks, note that these terror actions take place in the South and do not affect places like Manila, Angeles City, Olongapo and other tourist destinations. No tourist in his/her right mind should be traveling to places like Jolo - stay away from Muslim dominated areas).

Orchid Inn ResortA friend forwarded this item to me that was posted on the AC message board: Just a reminder to "be careful out there." In the area between the Clarkton House Hotel and Checkpoint I have copied down the following cycle/trike license plates that have approached me with the lines, "Remember me? I work at your hotel" or "When are you going back?" or just a smile and a high-five: 9752NP, 5583CC, 7119CR, RH5001, (Plus a few others that were "For Registration.)" It must work for them or they wouldn't keep trying it. WARNING: Another potential "set-up" that I witnessed today in the same area: Two kids, maybe 12-14 years old, one boy and one girl, (who should have been in school) walking towards me from the opposite direction. Upon meeting, with the encouragement of the boy, the girl went five feet out of her way into the street to bump into me on purpose, after which she started screaming she was hurt. I expected a trike to "come to her rescue" but none showed up. I just kept walking after calling them a few names in tagalog. Jeez! What next? (Well, I can relate one item that can answer "what next". Information was passed on to me that there have been a couple of incidents in which an elderly man on a bike purposely swerves in front of foreigners riding a motorcycle. He falls, immediately police are on the scene, foreigner is forced to pay for hospital and around another P5,000 or so to "settle". The "I know you scams" are very active. One tourist was approached three times by three different people but fortunately he was aware of the scam. The young boy and girl scam definitely is a new one. Additionally, the traffic cops are out in force looking for any excuse to get violations against foreigners and locals as well. Remember, the fast approaching season is the time to be on extra alert for scammers and ambitious cops. Make sure you scooter and motorcycle riders wear helmets and have the right licenses, car drivers, fasten those seat belts. Try not to give any of the cops an excuse to stop you.)

This is one I did not read in any local newspaper. A lady I know related to me that she accompanied her sister and husband (German) to a place he owned in Magalang. In the afternoon, around 3 PM, when returning to Angeles City, as they neared the Dee Hwa Liong Hospital two motorcycle riders came up behind them and suddenly they experienced what they thought was a flat tire. They pulled over and immediately two individuals came up to the car. The passenger rolled down her window but not all the way. A gun appeared in the window and a shot was fired. It missed the German by inches but hit her sister in the leg. The two men proceeded to rob them of their money and valuables. Later, when talking to some staff at the hospital they were informed that many robberies take place along this stretch of road at during daylight and at night. It was lucky no one was killed but I figured it deserves a warning to be alert if anyone of you should need to traverse this road. For sure, you won't see me visiting anyone in that area unless I absolutely have to.

The Wednesday, 11 Nov edition of the Sun Star newspaper had a story reporting that the police are hunting for Maribel Langley Van Keulen, an American that is pretty well known in Angeles City, Subic and other locations. Judge Maria Paras-Quiambao issued an arrest warrant against Langley after the Supreme Court junked her petition for writ of amparo. Earlier Langley filed before the high court a writ of amparo against Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Jesus Versoza, National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Region 3 director Rustico Vilgilia, and 10 other police officials in Angeles City, including Chief Inspector Luisito Tan, one of those who filed libel charges against her. Her writ for amparo claimed that policemen in AC had been harassing and even threatening her life after her efforts to make investigative reports of human trafficking and prostitution here allegedly involving collusion between law enforcers and bar owners. Langley is also facing other cases for alarm and scandal, simple oral defamation, and serious resistance and disobedience to an agent of a person in authority. Langley is also suspected as being the author of the website centralluzoncorruption.com. (I am very familiar with this "lady" and she is a bit aggressive in her endeavors to report on various actions she considers to be corrupt and is very vocal in addressing these concerns to law enforcement officials and does not hesitate to name names. Ever since the website centralluzoncorruption.com came on line many have accused her of being the originator of it. I myself, do not believe this. I think she, along with many others, might submit information to the website as they promise to investigate claims of corruption by individuals. Langley has always denied any official connection with this site and there is no reason for anyone to think otherwise, without actual proof. As far as all the other charges, well, we'll just have to wait for a follow up story to see how this plays out. I do not think her life is in danger despite the fact Wild Orchid Resortshe does sort of piss off a hell of a lot of people who are in a position to make her life difficult. But over the years that is the road she has chosen to follow and she is a survivor - I must acknowledge that there are elements of truth in some of her accusations but far too many people are not interested in truths. Remember, this is a country that will allow someone like Erap Estrada to run for President again and thousands of people will actually vote for him. This is a country where thousands of citizens sympathize with Imelda Marcos. This a country that is wonderful but corruption is a normal way of life and corrupt politicians and law enforcement personnel are rewarded with elected offices and promotions instead of being disgraced. Believe me, no doubt there are a hell of a lot of American politicians that would welcome the same opportunities but at least, in the States, there are true investigative reporters that will dig out the bent politicians and police and print the facts. The result is usually the end of one's career unless you are Barney Franks. The Sun-Star will never send a reporter to interview Langley or take any time to investigate the veracity of her allegations or even print a follow-up story. Right now she may have bitten off more than she can chew but hopefully, not so much that she is in any physical danger. Time will tell.)

Here are two announcements that do not give me a warm fuzzy feeling in the pit of my stomach:

  1. Obama and Janet Napolitano Appoint Arif Alikhan, a devout Muslim as Assistant Secretary for Policy Development Source announcement: Homeland Security Press Room.
  2. The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is proud to announce that the DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano swore-in Kareem Shora, a devout Muslim, who was born in Damascus, Syria as ADC National Executive Director as a member of the Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC). It's a wonder that they did not have Dr. Malik Nidar Hasan as a White House advisor.

I have to pass this one on. Finally a smart judge that is not afraid of the ACLU. "FLORIDA COURT SETS ATHEIST HOLY DAY - In Florida, an atheist created a case against Easter and Passover Holy days. He hired an attorney to bring a discrimination case against Christians and Jews and observances of their holy days... The argument was that it was unfair that atheists had no such recognized days. The case was brought before a judge. After listening to the passionate presentation by the lawyer, the judge banged his gavel declaring, "Case dismissed!" The lawyer immediately stood objecting to the ruling saying, "Your honor, How can you possibly dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas, Easter and others. The Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur and Hanukkah, yet my client and all other atheists have no such holidays." The judge leaned forward in his chair saying, "But you do. Your client, counsel, is woefully ignorant." The lawyer said, "Your Honor, we are unaware of any special observance or holiday for atheists." The judge said, "The calendar says April 1st is April Fools' Day. Psalm14:1 states, 'The fool says in his heart, there is no God.' Thus, it is the opinion of this court, that, if your client says there is no God, then he is a fool. Therefore, April 1st is his day. Court is adjourned." You gotta love a Judge that knows his scripture!

A few lads in Las Vegas are sending the Christmas greetings to their friend here in Angeles City. Seated are Don Sholoff, Jack Rankin and Jim Truman. That leaves the standing duo of Dewey Beasley and Charlie Barnes. Of course, big Don is usually found at the dining room of the VFW here in AC so just wish him a big Merry Christmas the next time anyone runs into him.

Later on in this column I will be featuring a bunch of other folks that will be wishing one and all a Merry Christmas and they will be a hell of lot better looking than these guys.

For those of you who are freezing your asses off in the States or parts of Australia, England, Sweden, Norway, and so many other cold weather countries with equally cold women, you definitely want to book a flight to the Philippines. The weather at this time of year is perfect, warm swimming time and who knows, maybe the latest design in women's swim wear might have reached Angeles City and believe me, we have plenty of warm blooded, beautiful women that will look perfect in these outfits. Don't laugh but they are actually called "pussy cups" and I was not the one who named them. I wonder which Club or Hotel will introduce these at one of their pool parties. Maybe Dave Fisher at Treasure Island, he is usually into innovative ideas.

Many thanks to Mike Connelly, Korea and his addition to my hot sauce collection and also to the person who dropped off some super hot stuff from Vietnam. He left me a note but I could not make out the name, I think it was "Glen", who was supposed to return to see me but never made it or if he did, then he missed me again. (Good news, it was Glen Kenny and Ken James who dropped off the hot sauce and I was here to meet them this time). Folks, here is my cell phone number, 0928-778-1473, please send me a text if you are in town and want to drop something off. I feel so bad when I get messages from folks that missed me, some by only an hour or so. I am in and out a lot, no set schedule except for darts and Rotary. My hot sauce collection is my pride and joy and I am now at the stage where I have to get my brother-in-law to build another display case for me as I am getting to a point where I cannot display them properly. Will be working on that this month. For those looking for me in December be advised that I will be out a lot. My Santa Claus appearance schedule is as follows: 5 Dec Swagman Resort- Special Forces Children's gift giving at Josephville 2 - 12 noon, about one hour. 12 Dec, Bahay Bata Street Children's Center, 2 PM. 13 Dec, all day at my farm for our charity project providing gifts, lunch, games and prizes for 154 children from low income families. Noblesse School, 16 Dec, one hour in the morning. 17 Dec, Brightwood School, all day. 18, 19, 20 Dec Nepo Mall, third floor, all day, until early evening. 24 Dec Santa's visit to three hospital charity wards to dispense money, food baskets and candy, start around 2 PM then return for our family Christmas Eve party. 25 Dec - Clark SM Mall morning and afternoon except for a quick appearance at the Swagman for Santa's annual quick visit around 1 PM and finally 26 Dec, again at Clark SM Mall. That takes care of Dec except for our gift giving of clothes and food packages to one Aeta village one day between Christmas and New Years. Haven't come up with the specific day yet. In between appearances I will be out trying to get info for the Jan HTH column so finding me in Dec might be a bit difficult. In Jan, I will be available a lot as I try to recover from an active December. By the way, I am having my brother-in-law build another cabinet to hold my hot sauces so I have more space to display them.

Christmas greetings to Ted Kelly from New York who now lives in Savannah, Georgia but I will forgive him for that. Ted came from my part of the woods when I was a kid in Astoria, Long Island. He went to Jamaica, High School and I went to Bryant HS. Ted played professional baseball with the Chicago Cubs in 1965 but suffered an injury after only 60 games. I am glad he made it to my stable and am more than pleased that he is a reader of this column. Good luck Ted, hope to see you again so we can chat some more.

If anyone knows the location of Eddie Walker, an American, living in Angeles City, please let me know his present address. His brother and mother, in the States is anxious to know how he is getting on. They have called me twice to enquire and I have not seen Eddie since last year.

Mr. Hans Kunzli, San Fernando City, La Union, your wallet has been found containing your Philippine driving license and BPI Express Teller card. Naturally there was no money with it. I will hold it at my stable until the end of Dec and then toss it if not claimed.

The following comments were taken from the 16-22 Nov edition of the Pinoy Tribune newspaper. The article was written in Tagalog by reporter Ni Antonio Garcia.

"Extortion Activities Continue at Fields Avenue - Amidst the recent shuffle among PNP Officers in Angeles City, especially at Field’s Ave., Balibago, extortion activities never ceased. Especially when foreigners are involved in a case, extortion has been a common practice among corrupt investigators of Station 4 of Angeles City Police Office. Furthermore, no action is being taken by the newly installed Chief Sr. Supt. Danilo Bautista regarding the issue since the alleged extortion has been a common practice on the said station. Does this mean that officials are merely changed but issues like extortion remains? If they really want to get rid of this corrupt practice at Station 4, traditional investigators should all be dismissed and be thrown to battle in Mindanao for them to straighten-up their acts. Even the new Station 4 Chief seems to not have the balls to fix this dilemma. What can be the reason for this Maj. Javier and CD Director Bautista? Paging Col. Bautista... Sir, I just want to bring to your attention the harsh attitude of one of your staffs in your office, particularly, the police woman with the surname of Villanueva. This staff of yours might bring you to trouble soon CD Bautista. I’ve heard many complaints regarding this lady’s untoward attitude. Settle this Col. or this staff of yours can cause annoyance someday. She should change her manner of accepting visitors and ease her arrogance. This is just a sample Villanueva". (It is rare for something like this to appear in print in a local newspaper. It does appear that since the departure of Maj Lorenzo some of the personnel assigned to Station Four have resorted to some nefarious activities. In all fairness to Maj. Javier though, I have been informed by a reliable source that he has been taking some immediate measures to have some assigned personnel transferred out of Station Four due to some questionable activities on their part. The problem is that it is not difficult to move some police personnel out of Station but it is difficult to have them replaced. This is where the City Director must assist the new Commander in assuring that replacement personnel are provided and that they are of good character. It would be a shame to leave Maj. Javier short of personnel due to a lack of cooperation from the City Director. In a very short time Maj. Javier has found how frustratingly difficult it is to command Station Four in such a way that questionable activities are kept to a minimum. It appears also, that some personnel assigned to the Barangay Balibago Bantay Bayan (Tanods) may have joined in to take advantage of foreigners. A case in point is when four Singaporeans were involved in an argument with one German National named Thorsten Koethe inside of the Lancelot bar and then outside as well. As it turned out all individuals were taken to Station four due to an escalation of the argument outside of the bar. As it turned out, as the Singaporeans were being detained one individual Bantay Bayan member of Brgy. Balibago allegedly asked them to put all their belongings inside a paper bag promising them that he will give it back after their release. The bag was later found by a concerned citizen along Jhonny's St. around 0400 hrs and taken to Station Four. Naturally, the bags were empty but the Singaporeans identified the missing items as: 3,600 Singapore dollar, Angeles Beach ClubP98,000 and one Nokia N96 worth P25,000; one Nokia N6610 @P6,000, one Nokia N60 @P13,000, one Apple I-phone @P39,000, one Samsung Jet Phone @P19,000, and one Armani Exchange Belt @ P5,000. It is suspected that these items were stolen by the individual who took the bag from them and the suspected Tanod was identified by name. The group of Singaporeans decided to file criminal charges against this particular individual before the Angeles City Prosecutor's Office. The original beef between Koethe and the Singaporeans was settled between them. I have omitted the name of the Barangay Tanod member but am sure that Barangay Captain Tony Mamac is well aware of who he is as a case of theft has been filed against the suspect. No doubt Captain Mamac will be taking a closer look at the personnel he is putting on the streets of Fields Ave with the purpose to assure law and order, not to be there to enrich themselves.)

On 26 Nov I was able to have a sit down with Maj Javier and discuss the comments quoted in Pinoy Tribune newspaper. Maj Javier is considering filing a libel case against the two reporters from that newspaper due to their derogatory comments regarding his "not having the balls to fix the dilemma" in that the Maj asked "what, have they seen me in a shower?" The Maj explained to me that in his first two weeks in office he reassigned 12 personnel and plans are to remove two more due to questionable activities. Of the twelve removed four were organic to Station Four and 8 were trainees. The eight trainees have been replaced but only two of the regulars have been replaced, thereby leaving him short two experienced police officers. He has been actively trying to clean up Fields Ave by clearing out the vendors and hustlers. In fact he has filed cases against some hustlers. He is confiscating the Viagra being sold by individuals in the street and has issued fines to erring vendors payable to City Hall. He will be taking actions to clean out the beggars that populate the Fields Ave area. The Major fully realizes the momentous task in front of him and it has weighed so heavily on his mind that recently he was considering resigning his position. But, he is willing to stay on and continue his task in continuing the efforts of Maj Lorenzo to run an honest Station and weed out any wrong doers, until such time he is reassigned. He can do this only with the full support of the City Director and the general population in his area of Command. Maj Javier gave me permission to publish his cell phone number so that anyone who feels he or she is not receiving fair treatment from police personnel or are victims of a set-up can contact him directly. The number for Major Rogelio Javier is 09185948110 and he is serious about being contacted. He is committed to running a professional, honest police station and will not tolerate any of his men undermining his objective to do so. By the way, the policewoman Villaneuva mentioned by the reporter above was only doing her job. I was told that the reporters were aggressively trying to barge in on a meeting being held by the City Director and Villanueva had to take extra effort to prevent them from doing so. So there you have it. You do not have to take my word for it, if any of you living here in AC doubt the veracity of Maj Javier then go to his office personally and present your doubts. I would not want his job because he has to deal with too many people that do not want an honest Commander at Station Four.

Now that it is holiday time and one will be drinking at Christmas time and also on New Years Eve I think it is appropriate to have Peter Hoegsberg wish you a happy drinking time. Peter is a long time resident of Angeles City and a regular at the Hang-out, Thi-Hi and Honey Ko's. As you can see, he does not wait for an excuse to have a drink or two but enjoys himself year round. His all around joviality and ability to consume quantities of alcohol year round, but of course, not excessively, and maintain a pleasant personality, qualifies him as my happy boozer for 2009. He is pictured here relaxing at Honey Ko's as he tries to remember exactly where he is and wondering why it is taking so long for his next drink to appear. If you would like to meet Peter and congratulate him on this recently bestowed honorable mention then look for him at the Hang-out on any given day, around late afternoon, early evening. He is only one of the many great folks that gather at the Hang-out which is home to what could be called a mini United Nations since so many different Nationalities are represented. I will be looking for you there and who knows, you could qualify for the "Happy Boozer" for year 2010. I will present Peter with his "Happy Boozer" award sometime in Jan 2010.

Massacre in Mindanao - Politics in the Philippines can be ugly as hell but what happened in a village of Maguindanao province, Mindanao, is beyond belief. Up to 46 men and women, 13 of whom were journalists, were taken from their vehicles, marched off and then massacred. The people who did this have been described as "animals" and "not human" and described as a "bestial act" by various officials. Regretfully, this incident was perpetrated by the powerful Ampatuan clan who are political opponents of the family of Buluan Vice Mayor Esmael Mangudadatu. His family and supporters were on the way to file documents officially documenting him in the gubernatorial race in Maguindanao in the May elections. The victims found were shot and many were hacked to death. Most of the victims were women. These cowardly, vicious, animalistic Muslims knew no mercy and acted as crazed dogs who became more and more violent as they smelled the blood and the carnage they were inflicting. These people should be rounded up, put against a wall, and shot. The Amputuan family under the leadership of Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr. should be arrested immediately based on the evidence against him. Members of this family are political leaders in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). Which religious book do these sick Muslims read that justifies this type of behavior. The excuse of the Armed Forces spokesperson , Lt.Col Romeo Brawner Jr. is that the culture of violence and clannish politics were to be blamed for the violence. So it is a cultural thing and is to be excused? Just like Muslims in the US kill and abuse their children who become too "westernized" and we are to excuse that because it is part of their culture? These are people who think nothing of kidnapping tourists and beheading them if ransoms are not paid. This part of the Philippines is a haven for family warlords who have their own private armies and no President, current or past, has been able to do anything about it. These people are not warriors, they are sick, evil, greedy cowards. All the people they killed on that day were unarmed and only carried documents to register for an election. So much for democracy in Mindanao, a haven for evil of the highest order. Update - on 27 Nov the Inquirer newspaper reported that Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr., now in government custody, still enjoys the friendship of President Macapagal-Arroyo. Says her spokesperson: "it doesn't mean that the Ampatuans are no longer our friends, if ever they indeed committed the crime." If ever indeed, I wonder how deep the investigation will go since all the Ampatuans enjoy the "friendship" of the President. Friendship or no friendship I would like to see all those involved in this horrendous act of cowardly murder lined up against a wall and shot once evidence shows guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Last month, Australian citizen Tyrone H. had the honor of being the first foreigner to be detained at the newly built holding cell for foreigners at Station Four. Granted, it is not furnished with anything comfortable to lie or sit on but the reason given is that the bare appearance is to prevent any prisoner from committing suicide or causing some injury to himself. Many of the entertainment establishments on Fields Ave as well as private donors donated money for the construction and upgrade of the holding cells at station four. In the past, foreigners were thrown into a small cell along with locals and all had to use the same toilet. This new cell is large and the detainees can have access to a separate CR opposite the cell. Granted, the cell is not as comfortable as Tyrone's room at the Niagara but better than the old days. Oh, Tyrone was accused of physically abusing a young lady and according to the police, this is not the first time that he has found himself in a bit of trouble. Maybe someone could donate a mattress to Station Four to be placed in this cell. That might not be considered dangerous to a detainee but it would give a bit of comfort for sitting or sleeping.

Be careful of those internet romances with these sweet, "innocent" Filipinas. The Inquirer carrieda story about an American, one Allan Toor who thought he was engaged to a girl in Cebu but instead found he was bilked out of P100,000. It seems he was waiting for her arrival at the Hollywood International Airport in Florida with flowers and chocolate in hand. He waited, and waited and surprise, surprise, she was a no-show. It turns out she provided him with a false name, false address and even provided a picture of a local singer-actress to identify herself to Toor. She used the name Arkishra Toribio Manuel, 29 years old with residence in Consolacion, Cebu. Toor has sent a letter to Senior Supt. Patrocinio Comendador, Chief of Cebu City Police Office seeking his assistance in locating this lady. The Chief turned the case over to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group. The article ended by stating "an Internet search made on the name "Arkishra Toribio Manuel" showed that she was in the Twitter account of another foreigner, identified as a Gary Wigle, who appeared to be her boyfriend, police said". That was the story and now I am curious what part this Gary Wigle played in this scam and whether there is any further investigation going on. Anyway, as I have said for many years, do not trust these ladies you meet on the internet. Far too many Filipinas have a very natural ability to fabricate with complete ease. Do NOT send money to someone you have not met personally or had checked out as thoroughly as possible. Toor met this lady through the dating website called "Cherry Blossom." Sounds like a website one and all should avoid. Toor was so taken in that he forwarded this lady money for her placement fee, visa processing, airfare and dormitory expenses in Manila. All bullshit expenses from Manual. So, old Mr. Toor got a two thousand dollar lesson and he is lucky it did not cost him more. I hope he put the flowers in water and ate the candy so he got something out of the long distance relationship.

Where is Tick? So many people have asked me that question and each time I have had to answer, "I don't know". But now, thanks to Joe Nelson, who forwarded a message received from Cole, I can now say that he is in Duarte, California. He celebrated his birthday last month with Cole and he is receiving treatment at the City of Hope National Medical Ctr, a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated comprehensive cancer center. I am hoping that Cole will provide more details on treatment being received and how Tick is doing. Does he have plans to return to the Philippines? Many folks here wish him well and he is definitely remembered by his many friends here in Angeles City.

Dave Donney stopped by my stable to say hello after his short visit back to Australia. He wanted to pass on that he has completed his consulting duties at the SM Vasco's but still enjoys stopping in there for a cup or coffee or a beer once in a while and hopes to see some of his mates there. Early next year he will be heading for a job in PNG so will be away from Angeles City once again. I mentioned to Dave that I heard that the women in PNG are not all that good looking. He gave me one of his unique DD responses - "Mate, they are so ugly that they would can chase dogs out of a butcher shop". Man, that IS ugly!

The man who knows all the local news, Roger Wheeler has been hired by the newly opened "Hotel A" located at 21 Malabanas Road. It is located a few meters pass or before what used to be the divine Shepherd Hospital depending in which direction you are driving. It is Korean owned but is geared for the international travelers. Their menu will be international and with Roger at the helm you can bet it will be friendly. They have a swimming pool and room rates are reasonable priced between P1,500 to P2,000. Standard, executive and deluxe rooms are offered. Surveillance cameras are in the process of being installed for security purposes. You can make reservations by calling 63-45-322-5572. The Email address is: hotel_a@ymail.com. In the near future I will pop over there to take a few pictures and see what the rooms look like. Roger has told me that they are all large and comfortable and we all believe everything Roger says. I am happy to say that the A Hotel will be the first Korean owned Hotel to join the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Pampanga (HARP) which is testimony that this is one Korean owned Hotel that wants to be tourist friendly and not just cater to Koreans. That is a rarity in this City. It was also a pleasure to meet Engineer E. L. Enriquez (Ricky) who was the building contractor for this hotel. He used to play on one of my pool teams way back in the early 90's. He has written a book about pool or billiards titled "Advanced Pocket Billiards (The Book) that is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. You can check out www.outskirtspress.com/advancedpocketbilliards. (right now promotional discounts at the hotel are being offered)

If when coming to Angeles City you decide to take a trip for some beach fun in La Union then check out one of my favorite places there, the Coconut Grove Beach Resort with 28 rooms offered. You can celebrate special events there as well as relax, dine, play lawn bowls, swim in the pool or on the beach or just look for beautiful women in bikinis beachside. Shucks, you can even partake of ballroom dancing every Saturday night as well. Whatever strikes your fancy and the room rates are pretty reasonable between P1,452 to P2,299. Telephone number 63-72-6604 or Fax 607-6621.

Good news, the Lovliness Cafe and Restaurant has reopened for business after closing down because of a fire nearby and a pain in ass Korean owner of an establishment next door that made life a bit difficult for them. The brother and sister act of Jen and Joel are back with waitress Grace taking orders and serving. It is nice to see this little restaurant on Perimeter Road open again.

I stopped in at Roy's Pub (Opposite the Orchid Inn) around 5:30 PM one evening last week and I was shocked to see it empty except for one other customer. Before, at this time there was always a crowd of regulars to liven up the place and it was a wonderful atmosphere. Now, it was dead, there was no personality at all. Even the happy, personable, cute waitresses were absent. The biggest shame of all is that the previous English manager, in what had to be an insane decision, removed all the hundreds of key rings that were hung along the walls and sold them to someone. That was disgraceful and even the picture of the original owner, Roy, was removed. My goodness, that key chain collection was a wonderful thing to see and kept the memory of Roy alive. It took years to gather that collection. Another question is why did the present owner remove the racing pictures belonging to Clive Pollington and move them to his bar in Manila without Clive's permission? I have been told that the food at Roy's is still decent but that is all and I think it will take more than a decent meal to bring back the popularity of this once, wonderful, little pub. I suspect Roy must be turning in his grave at this turn of events.

A source has told me that with the elections coming up next year that there is one local official that is kind of looking for some contributions from the bars ranging from P5,000 to P100,000 for his campaign fund. Though such contributions are voluntary in nature some Club owners are nervous that if they do not make the requested donations this official might make life a bit difficult for them. I have not confirmed this rumor but something like this crops up every election year. One must remember that any donation to any politico is purely voluntary and if you do not want to contribute, then absolutely do not. Of course, if you believe the person is sincere, honest and can have a positive impact on Angeles City if elected, then feel free to contribute. Do NOT contribute out of fear!

Congratulations go out to Peter (Robber) and Precy O'Donnell as they celebrated 13 years of marriage last 29 Nov. They have two lovely children and are very happy together. I did not realize that 13 years have passed that quickly and this horse is pleased to have had the honor of their friendship for all those years. I hope I am still around for their 25th Anniversary, or at least in spirit.

Well now, here are a few happy, relaxed lads that I was able to capture in their favorite haunts within the entertainment area. Picture on the left are Barry, owner of the Anchorage Inn and a couple of his friends and drinking partners. They are busy holding up one of the walls at the Inn on a casual Saturday night and despite the difficulty of this task took time out from their efforts to wish one and all a very Merry Christmas.

We now skip over to the other picture where we have Peter, with his exuberant smile, Shanno, Eric and I believe Charles at their favorite location, of course the International (formerly Shanno's). They also extend their Christmas greetings but I suspect they are more into a bit of grog at the New Year celebrations. It was my intent to get pictures of many beautiful women to greet you for this festive season and I did get a few but time ran out for me, so I gave up on looks and settled for this lot. Nice guys all!

Well, well, as I live and breathe. I happened to pop into the ABC Hotel to meet the new Chef, who, regretfully, was in Manila and I was able to catch our famous Chef Phillip from the Yats Wine Club enjoying a luncheon get together with friends. Included in the picture are Gerard Jr., and Karel Heinen and I was remiss in not getting the name of the first gentleman sitting next to Phillip. No doubt Phillip was dining out to gather up some new ideas for his menu at Yats. Only kidding, Chef Phillip is a master chef in his own right and it was good to see him away from his turf within the Clark Freeport. Regretfully, I have never had the time to get back to the ABC to meet the new guy in charge of the restaurant but hope to be able to feature him in my Jan column. Gerard was present as well but was quite busy making preparation for his trip to the States and to a number of South American countries. He is due back in-country on 10 Dec.

Vidar (Previously associated with Eruptions) seems to have bounced back from his Immigration problems. He is out and about and has opened a new bar, Sea Dreams, located next to the Midnight Rock on Perimeter Road. I haven't had a chance to go in and check it out yet and might not be able to do so until Jan. I will be quite busy in Dec and not have much time to get around but will try to get there.

Attorney for the Horse - highly recommended: Atty. Ronaldo P. Duro - Cell Phone: 0939 567 2846 - Keep this number in your wallet or cell phone. You never know when you might need legal help.

Harry, Just to let you know we will be doing another gig at Tequila Reef on 10th Dec, with myself (Howard McKay), Doggy Dave, Canadian Steve (Banjo) and others. Hope this is not too late for your deadline. (just under the wire Howard - Folks, put this on your calendar as Howard and his gang put on a fun show with plenty of singing, joking and just all around good times. More fun than one of those American "tea parties")

10 Dec - Another Great Rock n Roll night at Midnight Rock Featuring Live music from Rockin Dave starting at 6pm. Wow, two musical experiences on the same night. Maybe you can make it a double feature. Dave is the star of the show as he works out on the piano that has been with him for many years. He was able to get it over here from England. You have to check out Dave on U-Tube. This guy is a talent, with or without hair. (www.midnightrock.ph)

19 Dec - The Subic R.S.L. members are having their Christmas party at the Down Under Bar, Barrio Barretto, 2 PM. All Members are free. Male visitors P300, Female P100 (bit of sexism going on here - some women eat more than the men) - Anyway, Santa is attending so bring a present not over P500. Darn, I'll be at Nepo Mall that day.

31 Dec - New Years Eve at the ABC Hotel - New Years Eve at the SkyBar - Location: ABC Hotel SkyBar - Time: 10:00pm - 02:00am - Entrance: p300 (includes one drink) - The most breath-taking and exciting place to celebrate New Years Eve. Party in the Sky w/ AC's hottest ladies! (This sounds like something you will want to attend - the view is spectacular)

Folks, you might be wondering why I inserted the picture, above, of that funny looking double decker vehicle. A friend of mine in Las Vegas, Bob, forwarded me an Email containing some fantastic old, old pictures that were fantastic. This one is a scene taken in New York in 1896. I had to share it with the few viewers I might have in New York. I put it in that location because it ended up there by accident and I was not able to figure out how to move it to a more appropriate location. I left it there rather than take a chance on screwing it up. There were many other super photos that I may try to include bit by bit each month of different locations. This was the only one of New York. Hope you enjoy it.

I thank the folks that took the time to send me information on their special events. I wish all hotel and Club owners would do the same. Many readers of this column want to know what to look for when they come to town and some even plan their trips around special events or promotions. Remember, there isn't anything wrong with a bit of free publicity. Drop me a line via Email for special announcements.

TOURISTS OF THE MONTH

I caught up with 8 lads from Sydney who attended the grand opening of the Orchid Lagoon Resort last week and believe me, these lads were having one hell of a good time. They said that they fly over this way about four times a year and always stay at the Wild Orchid. Needless to say, they were very impressed with the Lagoon addition and were impressed with the great buffet luncheon that greeted invited guests for this special occasion. Their timing for being here was right on. They can make this trip with ease four times a year because they are a team that work at the Ramp Office for Quantas Airlines and of course get a bit of a discount on the airfare. Of course they are all outstanding employees that work hard but also believe in playing hard as well. They are, in no particular order, Patrick, John, Graham, Mack, Joe, Colin, Dulles and Kenny. I was more that pleased to learn that they are all readers of this column. It was an honor to meet such a bunch of fine lads. The three ladies in the rear were part of the live band brought in by management to provide some good music and a few of the Quantas gang turned out to be light on their feet on the dance floor. The rest of the ladies were employees of the Hotel and I meant to get the name of the one in front with the nice legs but forgot to do so. First time I saw her at the Hotel and she was well worth a second or third look. Great personality. Let me throw in a few more pictures here for the Quantas Gang's scrapbook of memories.

I WOULD IF I COULD

Since I spent a bit of time writing about the cute waitress at the Orchid Lagoon I might as well continue with another sweet young lady to bring a bit of Christmas cheer to one and all. How would you like to find Jenny in your stocking? Jenny is 18 years old and works at the La Bamba Club. Being 18 and newly hired this young lady, as of when I took this picture remains a bit innocent. She is from Paranaque, Manila and has four sisters that I presume are as good looking as she is. She has 2 brothers and I don't care what they look like. She is a high school graduate and her ambition in life is to marry a good man. I informed her that I was a very good man but she did not want someone quite as old as me. Now, she might have made an exception except that I had to tell her that I was married to a wonderful woman already. See Priscilla, I don't fabricate! Since I put myself out of the equation I can tell you that this was her first job and she is looking for a YOUNG man to court her. So, all you old sex starved guys, bugger off. I did not ask her what age she considered to be old, I will let you guys figure that out. Regretfully, she did not have an Email address so you will just have to stop by the La Bamba to look her up. If you can't spot her ask help from Mommy Cel. Tell her the Horse sent you. Let me move on now as I am drooling over this picture too much. My imagination is working overtime!

TAPS

THE OSAN, KOREA BOYS stopped by my stable to say hello and to wish me an advance Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas. Mike Connolly was leading the pack and he added some hot sauce to my collection. On a serious the group donated a sum of money for my annual Christmas Charity in memory of one of their dear friends who passed away recently. James "Jimbo" Brant, a young man of only 50, who worked for Cubix passed away from a form of cancer. It was an unexpected illness and after being diagnosed he passed away far too quickly. It was touching and a toast was given along with a minute of silence in memory of Jimbo. He must have been a great guy to have so many friends remembering him. From Osan we have Wayne Ensley, Trex Bass, Mark Morgan, Bob Maupin, Ron Holcomb, Boomer, George Urban and Mike Connolly. Bo Linder and Bill Walsh were from Kunsan. It was obvious that all these men were close friends and enjoyed working and traveling together as well as enjoying each others company in Korea. It was great meeting them all and I look forward to seeing them again in the near future. If you enjoy a game of golf then look for Bob Maupin on the Osan golf course, he is the local pro there. As you can tell from the picture all of these guys are a bit senior but they did bring along one token young guy to keep an eye on them. I forgot his name, he is third from the left in the back. He was a bit shy.

HOW PUMPKIN PIES ARE REALLY MADE

This is one picture I thought was funny enough to share with you folks. Since we Yanks celebrated Thanksgiving last month and pumpkin pie is one of our favorite traditional deserts I thought it is good to know how they are really made the right way. Now you know the true story and thank goodness it only comes around once a year. Since I am into a little humor here let me pass on a very serious subject that the folks in La Trinidad, Benguet feel could affect tourism in their area. The serious question is "should toilets the Filipinos often refer to as "comfort rooms" or "rest rooms" be called as it is?" Josephine Gacad, Benguet tourism council chair, said more often than not, foreigners found it difficult to relieve themselves along the highway since they could hardly see a signage that says "toilet". They said that foreigners were surprised to find out that "CR's" and "restrooms" were actually "toilets". My goodness, how about the "Loo" or the "WC" for water closet? Now, I do not see where the men have to worry about long rides without seeing a "toilet" since it is common practice in the Philippines for vehicles to stop anywhere along the highway to allow men to get out and urinate alongside the road. Of course, women could find it difficult to follow suit. Why should the Filipinos worry about any foreigner not knowing what a comfort room or restroom is really used for? I would think they could learn the difference within an hour or so of entering the country, after all, I think comfort room or restroom is a far more dignified term than "toilet". After going into my 29th year in the Philippines I find myself asking for the "CR" or comfort room when I return to the States for a visit. My son teases me as the waitress or waiter in a restaurant looks at me blankly and asks "look for what sir" and I remember I must ask for the bathroom. Very seldom do I use the term "toilet". Now, to me, especially at my age, when in dire need, going to the bathroom for a leak, gives me great comfort so why not go to the comfort room? Taking it a bit further, taking a good healthy dump, after consuming quantities of prune juice gives me even greater comfort. Also, with my bad knees, bad back and other aching bones, quite often taking time out in the "CR" provides me with a few restful minutes. So, why not "restroom". My recommendation is that this guy Gerry Lab-oyan, Cooperative Bank of Benguet general manager, who wants to use the term toilet to appease ignorant tourists, FORGET IT! Stick with the more appropriate name that is recognized internationally anyway. My vote is down with "toilets" and up with "CRs" and "Restrooms". Of course, it would be nice if those facilities that give me great comfort would be maintained in a hygienic manner. In other words, keep the damn things clean and sparkling, with toilet paper and running water and that folks, would give me even greater COMFORT. Don't worry though, I won't try to make any pumpkin pies during my visits to the Loo, eh, toilet, or is it CR, no, restroom, maybe WC, or wherever I can take a dump in comfort! Ah hell, horses go wherever they want to and leave the mess for someone else to clean up. Have a nice day.

THE ORCHID LAGOON RESORT

I wrote up the Orchid Lagoon Resort last month and also wrote a few words about the opening in my opening remarks so it is time now to add the promised pictures. It was a great event and I predict much success for this great addition to the Orchid Group. I have been told that sometime next year they will be developing the area now used for paid parking. I know that plans can change but right now the idea is to have sort of a bar, open air sort of drinking and eating area with a few rooms about as well. Nothing written in stone yet so I will have to wait until the plans are drawn up and construction has started.

THE BEGINNING AND THE END

It was a hell of a fight! Fantastic from beginning to end and Pacquiao certainly earned his 7th weight class championship, something no other boxer ever did. The first three pictures depict the beginning and the end when the referee stepped in and stopped the fight. Cotto was soundly beaten, very much so and I cheered along with all the other Filipinos in attendance at the Lewis Grand Hotel. It was a perfect venue to watch the fight. General Manager James set aside tables for Wayne and his Asian Escapades crew and one table for readers of this column. The room was at capacity and not one person was disappointed with the result. Cotto received one hell of a beating but and now Pacquiao is counting his money all the way to the bank and for sure, if there is a Mayweather Jr., fight in his future, he will be able to own his own bank. But, he better be careful and be nice to Pinky because that is one fight that could knock him on his ass.

MERRY MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ONE AND ALL

Only twenty-five days until Christmas day is upon us. I am happy to include a few pictures of some happy folks that want to pass on their Christmas greeting to the readers of this column. They are all great people, some of whom you would love to meet except for one picture I threw in of two lads that nearly caused some of my family members to be a bit sad. But, due to their extreme stupidity, hopefully Christmas for them will be miserable. Well hell, I can't be nice to everyone.

Cherry's ClubSo, 12 pictures, start counting at the top, left to right, 1 thru 12. 1. Black Horse Sisters, Subic, photo sent to me by Gunner, a man with good taste. 2. Some lovely dart players at Barrio Barretto enjoying the end of league gathering. 3. A very charming lady named Yza who can be discovered at Honey Ko's. 4. Well hell, I forgot to get her name but you can find her at Sportz Club, Arizona Hotel, Barrio Barretto. 5. Two ladies gracing the stage at the Midnight Rock where Rockin Dave pounds the ivories with great energy. 6. Ron and Elsa, still two love birds after many years of togetherness. 7. Two staff at the Arizona Hotel. 8. The great staff at John Power's Australian Visa office. 9. The brother and sister act plus waitress at the Loviliness Restaurant on Perimeter Road. 10. The charming, good looking staff at the Walk-a-Bout Hotel, Fields Ave. 11. The very nice, slightly thin but still sweet Tricia, Sportz Club, Barrio Barretto. 12. Two asshole very stupid Filipino thieves, Vonatan Remolona and Kim Bernard Solina. They were caught a few hours after their early morning theft run and turned over to Station Four. Regretfully, no physical harm was done to them. A broken arm or leg might give them pause in future years. Maybe the next time.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY YOSHI

I happened to be passing by the Bar-Hoppin Club after parking my car and stopped to say hello to owner, Don Thompson, who was standing outside his establishment. It has been a while since our last meeting and it was great to see him again. There was a lot of activity outside and inside the bar and Don explained that a Japanese citizen from Tokyo, Yoshi, was celebrating his birthday. Yoshi was providing free food for all the staff and any customers from opening to closing as part of his celebration. Yoshi, who turned 46 that day visits Angeles City twice a year and thoroughly enjoys himself. I wanted to stay longer and enjoy the food but I was taking a short break from writing this column and had to forsake the opportunity to pass up some free food. That is hard for any Horse to do. I was glad to meet Yoshi and to present him here as it is very rare for me to get the opportunity to meet a Japanese tourist. This guy had a great personality and I hope I get to meet him again. Yoshi, Happy Birthday.

THE PARADISE BEER GARDEN IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS

I am not going to go into a lot of words here because I think the pictures speak for themselves. Located at the end of Fields Ave this wonderful open air gathering place is fantastic. In a matter of days this Beer Garden has become extremely popular as a great girl watching location, drinks at reasonable prices, comfortable seating, and great food. As if that was not enough, they are part of "The Plaza" which houses newly opened Clubs Love and Marie, Shooterz, Car Wash and H-Rock. While relaxing at the Garden you can watch the Satellite TV featuring American ESPN, Rugby and many other sports programs via an African Satellite feed. Rob has his wood burning pizza oven fired up and has brought his famous Hoagie sandwiches to the menu as well. The Fields Plaza Complex has to be seen to be believed. What a great addition to Fields Ave.

Email me at jimharryhorse@gmail.comEmail me at jimharryhorse@gmail.com Here we are folks, at the end of this month's column and also at the beginning of another month. As usual, I have not got around to making out my Christmas cards, again using the excuse of being too busy. I still have the cards sent to me last year sitting on my desk where I have promised all year long to answer. Soon, people who do not read this column will think I am dead. I am happy to say that I have added an additional display case for my hot sauce collection and will provide a picture of it next month. I even have a light that I can turn on that enhances the display. All bottles are now easy to see, I no longer have to double them up on a shelf. I thank all those that contributed to the collection during the year and I have tried to mention you all in my column during the year. Bear with me in Jan as my column will be short for as with each December I will be on Santa duty and not have as much spare time as I raise funds for our annual charity project. Priscilla does all the work of preparation and helping me get in and out of my Santa outfit. Can't do it by myself. I do not know what 2010 has in store for us all but I sure am glad to have made it through another year of wonderful life and it has been so great to have met so many of you this year. Those of you who stop by my stable to say hello add so much to my life and keep me going. Yes, I am slowing down a bit but not quite ready to be put out to pasture. Folks, stay well, be happy, and for sure have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. And remember, even though those pesky reindeer are crapping all over my turf, remember, be kind to horses. (put your curser on the horse to see my Email address at bottom of your page)
