This month should be an interesting one, not only because it is "Mother's
Day" time again but because it is election time and here in Angeles City we
will be waiting to find out who will be our new Mayor. You might say,
"who cares" as many of you are tourists who do not stay here on a permanent
basis and many who do live here permanently might think the same way.
But the outcome of this election is important to all residents of this City
and to any tourists that might be coming here. You see, the Mayor is
the one that that sets the tone for this City and he or she will also have a
great deal of influence on the businesses in the entertainment district.
Which direction Fields Ave, Perimeter Road and Friendship entertainment
establishments go in the future will be subject to the overall objectives of
the new Mayor. We, of course, hope for a positive and cooperative
future for all concerned. Now, any folks running for political
positions anywhere in the world there is one common denominator for success
and that is MONEY. It is no different here in the Philippines where
there is now a feeding frenzy for money for all the different campaigns.
It doesn't matter how, where or why they get the money, as long as there is
enough. Favors are called in, alliances are made, and pressures build
up. Secret deals are made and it is all interesting and exciting.
Most folks would want nothing to do with it but it takes a lot of guts and
dedication to run for office here for all too often one might end up dead as
emotions build up. In this country it appears that one only need to be
an actor or actress to win office. One can be a communist leader, a
rebel, or some have made a fortune illegally such as being a drug lord at
one time or even been a kingpin in the illegal numbers game called jueteng.
Hell, even the "Pacman" Manny Pacquio wants to run for Congress with
absolutely no political experience at all. Variety is the name of the
game! who should one vote for? It is as hard to figure out as it is to guess
who will win American Idol this season. The important item to remember
during this month of May is that the heat is up and the beer is cold.
All the clubs are running the air-conditioners at full blast and the beat
goes on. As for me, I think I will just chill out at the "Klub Class"
the newest Club to open last month, located over the Bunny Ranch. More
about that later.
TIDBITS
"Harry, I came across your site while looking for pictures of pretty
filipinas and your website fit the bill. I've read quite a bit about the
great personalities of filipinas and their "delikadesa" (sp?). Anyway, I am
divorced and the last thing I want is another girl from the US and the
attitude that comes with it. So I'm seriously considering trying to find a
nice filipina via a dating site or by coming to the PI? Given your
experience, am I on the right track?" ( Dear M - Do not use a
dating site. Come and visit the PI, Angeles City, and get a feel for the
place, get used to the customs and the girls here. After a bit of
experience then you can check out dating sites. A general answer to your
question, by all means, yes, date a Filipina, they are wonderful women and
not age conscious. Just be careful, especially when going out with bar
girls because they are very good at the fabrication game. They will say
anything you want to hear and many have no honor at all. But, if you are
careful, take your time, use your brain and can sift through many words of
bullshit you might find that girl you are looking for. Just enjoy the
"dating game" first so you can recognize a good lady when she arrives.)
True Story - short version - American lives in Thailand
- builds up good bank account there - can't find the right girl - comes to
Angeles City with intent to find girl to marry - After one week finds girl in
bar - meets his criteria - makes friends with a Filipino who can help him get
married - six weeks later - married by some Mayor in Province - Mayor tells him
to come back in one month for final whatever - American gives new wife (by the
way, she was not very good looking) the pin number of bank account in Thailand -
open joint bank account here - stupid husband comes home one evening - no wife -
no Filipino friend around either - they both skipped out - bank account nearly
drained - joint account here nearly drained - husband mad - searches - gets
police assistance - files case in courts - gets help from CIDG personnel -
nearly the end of story. Late March - Tourist Assistance Center personnel
contact me - American has problem with Immigration on 7th St - they kept his
passport and were talking about putting him in jail - Who is the American? - the
stupid husband returns! Needs my assistance - he tells me he was upset
because the Immigration folks charged him the P500 express fee without telling
him before hand - he argued with them - all for a lousy P500. Stupid me, I
go to Immigration to try and help - am in shorts - no entry - went home, changed
pants - went back - talked to the VERY nice, gentle lady in charge who was very
patient - I was told that the stupid husband was yelling, arguing and accusing
the Immigration folks of being corrupt. Stupid is as Stupid does again!
I talk with the officer in charge for 30 minutes and explain how stupid this guy
really is and the situation with his "lovely wife" that no doubt affected his
mental state. Nice lady agreed to think about it over the weekend and
would not send the guy to jail, which the Commissioner in Manila had already
given her permission to do. She would be ready to talk to him on the
following Monday. I go out feeling that I have done a good deed here and
tell the American, let me call him "Bruce" that the lady in charge will not send
him to jail but will be willing to talk to him on Monday and all he had to do,
really, was be a bit apologetic and I was sure he would get his passport back.
Good old boy Bruce did not thank me for my time and effort, hell no, instead he
is pissed because he had to wait until Monday. He stated "hell Monday, now
I can't go to see my wife in the Province" - I am shocked - "what, you want to
see your wife, the one that ran away with a Filipino, stole your money and you
have a court case against her?" Bruce - "Duh, yeah, well I talked to some people
and they told me that she was probably under the influence of the Filipino guy"
- "OK fine, do me a favor, do not go to the Tourist Assistance Center again and
please, forget you know me, do not call again, here is your stop, get out,
goodbye and good luck!" By the way, the nice lady from Immigration called
me on Tuesday and our friend Bruce had not shown his face yet and his visa was
running out. I have no idea what the final outcome was and I don't care.
There are dogs trained to sniff out drugs and
explosives but I had to laugh when I read in the enquirer that they now have
dogs that can sniff out pirated DVD's being sold in Manila. You see,
pirated DVD's are big business here and when the stores in Manila get word that
inspectors are around they close up and hide the DVD's. Now, with super
sniff dog on the prowl it has become more difficult to hide the contraband.
What is next, will they use the dogs here in AC? Will they get warrants
and inspect homes to see if those evil DVD's are stashed on the premises?
Will the police set up foreigners by placing a pirated DVD in their room instead
of drugs? Will they make DVD possession a non-bailable offense? Will the
next big hit TV show be CSI-DVD? Just in case, I will be busy this month
burying all my pirated DVD's or maybe I will just give them to Norman, he always
has a solution for everything.
I received this tidbit of information from that
wandering traveler Jerry Prinz, a fellow VFW member here in Angeles City,
last month. I do not get to travel much so I appreciate reports that could
be informative and helpful to the readers of this column. It sure would be
nice if everything about the ACR-I card is positive and so far I'm a bit
optimistic.
"Just got back from 17 days in Thailand and no problems at either airport,
coming or going. When I got to Immigration in Manila Int. it was chockablock
with people. Never seen so many. There was an Immigration guy standing at the
entrance and I asked him if the ACR-I card line was still in the same place. He
said yes, you can go around all those people and go to the far right window.
Piece of cake, dirty looks and all.
Coming back in, they actually have a nice large plastic sign that says "ACR-I
Card Holders" posted in a prominent position on the Diplomatic window, the far
left line. Again a piece of cake. No changes. Only an exit permit and your card
when you leave and your card when you come back in. Could these people finally
be getting their act together? No, on second thought, probably a little too
soon for that.
I am really impressed by Bangkok's new airport, despite all the bad publicity
they have had. 2 times in and 2 times out it has been fast and efficient. This
time I noted more improvements. Moving walkways for departures and the arrival
hall has been reorganized since my last trip in NOV. Plenty of room and no more
wall to wall people that you had to bulldoze your way through. Looks a lot
cleaner too, like they are paying more attention to that. The old airport has
just reopened and most of the domestic flights and low budget airlines are
flying out of there. Bit of a hassle if you have connecting international
flights. But it gives the new airport a bit of breathing room and space to fix
some of the problems.
Still lots of hot beer and cold women. Cheers, Jerry
Well, here we go again, an update from Jerry. This goes along with
what I had heard earlier this year in that the Immigration folks were thinking
about a five year expiration date. Of course, my new card does not have an
expiration date so I hope they do not come up with a plan to charge me another
fifty dollars to come up with such date. You never know about those
creative folks at Immigration.

It looks like Immigration MAY, and I emphasize the word MAY,
have finally come up with a policy on renewal of ACR-I cards. Upon renewal, we
have been getting new cards back with the Expiration Date block blank. They
told me last month that the expiration was INDEFINITE, because they had
not yet decided on the length or cost of renewal. Buddy McGuire, our friendly
neighborhood insurance man went to Swaggy this month, paid P4200 I believe,
since he had already paid his Annual Reporting Fee (The horse paid P5,500
at the International Travel which seems to be the most expensive route to go).
He just got it back, and I personally sighted it yesterday. His Expiration Date
block is not blank but shows that it expires 12 APR 2012. Five years. Weather
this is a typo, somebody screwed up or it is the real deal, I don't know. But
just maybe they are finally getting their act together. Time will tell, when
somebody else gets a renewed card back. Jerry
Believe it or not those vendors on Fields Ave that are selling boxes
of Viagra and Cialis are breaking the law and can be arrested or, at the very
least, have their wares confiscated by the police. Normally, a foreigner
buying a box or two is not hassled by the law but there was one case in which a
foreigner was caught in the act of buying approximately 400 boxes of Viagra
boxed up in 18 large boxes which kind of made him look like a dealer. He dealt
with a vendor that frequents Fields Ave and worked a deal in which he only had
to pay P58 a box and agreed to meet him at 9 PM near the Butterfly Club at 9 PM
to close the deal. All went well, he paid the vendor P23,250 cash and took
possession of the goods. He put them in his car and shortly thereafter had
a visit from the police. The police, in this instance, were reasonable and
only confiscated the supply of Viagra but it could have been much worse.
Fortunately the matter was settled at the Tourist Assistance Center after the
PNP Lt. called an ACTA Trustee to come and help settle the matter. I
mention this only to alert visitors to this City and even Expats living here
that one should not trust these vendors in the entertainment area. When a
deal sounds too good to be true, in this town you are about to be screwed. Be careful folks.
Here is a true shocking story as related to me by an American female, a Texas gal currently living in Angeles City who found herself a near
victim of a rape attack last month. She came to my stable to relate her
story so that other women can learn from her experience and make sure that their
cars, if they drive, are locked when out on the road, especially at night. I did not
take notes so I have to rely on my memory as she told me she would send me the
details and a drawing of the suspects face.
It was a Saturday night at approximately 2230 hours and she was driving alone,
along Perimeter Road. Traffic was heavy and she was brought to a stand
still near the ABC Hotel when a stranger jumped into the passenger side of her
car and put a knife to her throat and told her to drive. He threatened to
kill her if she did not follow his instructions. Needless to say, Ms X was
terrified. He forced her to drive on base (Clark) and took her to an
isolated spot where he got her out of the car, pushed her to the ground and
ripped off her clothes from the waist down. He kept a knife to her throat
all this time. He did not cover his face so the victim was sure that he
intended to kill her. When he mounted her, before the act of rape could be
accomplished a noise was heard that indicated a guard was coming and the
attacker was distracted. At this time the victim was able to throw him off
her and scream for help. The rapist ran for the victims car and drove off
and managed to get out of the Friendship gate just as the guard was being
notified. He did notice that the car made a left turn onto Perimeter Road.
Later, the vehicle was found abandoned in front of a Club on Perimeter Road.
Now, this low life was a foreigner and by his accent the victim feels that he is
a New Zealander (Kiwi). I was hoping to have the artists sketch of this guy for
identification purposes but it was not forwarded to me as promised.
There are many things that this lady could have done to get assistance, i.e.,
she drove the car through the Friendship Gate where the local PNP have a
station. She realized that she could have just swerved to the right, into
the station and screamed for help but like most victims, she was terrified and
did not think of all this until after the fact. This is a terrible
experience for a woman to go through and it makes me very angry that it was a
foreigner who is still walking the streets somewhere. We are not sure of
the Nationality, the Kiwi part was only a guess but will this person surface
again and maybe kill someone? The impression of the victim was that the
police did not really care that much since it was a foreigner attacking another
foreigner but there are a bunch of motorcycle riders that are after this guys
ass but I suspect that he will never be caught. Priscilla the Horse has told me
that she always drives with her doors locked but now she will be even more
alert. Thanks to the gutsy lady for reporting this to me and wanting to
get the message out, maybe a lot more women will be extra alert and stay safe.

American Legion Post 123 now has free wireless internet service available for your use. Just bring in your laptop
computer to avail of this service. You don't even have to be a member! This
will give you something to do while waiting for your drinks and meals. Drop
on by and get on the internet, thanks to David Butler (who set it up). (About time, but I must mention that the Hotel La Casa
and Blue Boar Inn has had this service for over a year now and, smile, we
have better looking ladies to serve you)
Be careful
with your bill when enjoying a late night or early morning at the Doll House. Double check to make sure you are
not being charged for some items you did not drink or in the case below,
charged for services you did not agree to. It should not take a police
presence to get management to see the errors of their way.
"A certain Mr. Dean H, 30 years
old, presently billeted at the Wild Orchid Resort appeared
personally at this office to complain that the mamasan and manager of Dollhouse
forced him to pay the amount of Php2,400.00 for an EWR that he did not
commit to. On his statement, he just drank beer and he did not go with any girl. He did
not want any argument with the bar personnel, so he paid the
said amount aside from the beer that he drank. After that, he
immediately went to the PNP Tourist Assistance Center office to report on what happened. Police Aide
Oliver Longga accompanied him to PNP Station 4 along with two other Police
Aides. Police personnel from Station 4 accompanied Mr. Henshey to the Dollhouse
at which time the
amount of PhP2,400.00 was returned to him by the mamasan and the manager
of Dollhouse."
In last month's column I mentioned Cambodia and
asked if someone could provide a few words about it. I was pleased to
received a very detailed, well written informative report from a
reader who does not wish to have his name mentioned. I know he will be
reading this month's column and I hope he will realize how much I
appreciated his input. I think you will find his report quite
interesting.
In your April newsletter you requested
info on Cambodia. I just made a trip there in February to visit a fellow
Nevadan and I wrote up something for Go2phil. I would rather you don't
mention my name, but feel free to include as much as you want.
I was pleasantly
surprised on a recent trip to Phnom Penh this past February. I arrived via
Bangkok Thailand on an Air Asia flight. The tickets cost only $60 but the
taxes were $65! You can get a tourist visa upon arrival at the airport in
Phnom Penh for $20, but you have to have one passport sized photo to attach
to the form. Oh by the way the economy is based on dollars so there is no
need to exchange any money if you remain in Phnom Penh. You will even
receive dollar change down to the pocket change level where they will give
you local currency (Riel) for the remainder, which comes in handy for tips. Phnom Penh is a
pleasant city sitting on the shores of the Mekong river. The streets and
sidewalks are wide, and it is relatively safe to walk the streets at night.
I stayed on Rue 172 and walked three quarters of a kilometer late at night
for four nights in a row with no mishaps whatsoever. There are many expat
bars and restaurants. Typical meals cost less than $10. Local beers are
$1-2.
There were three
different ranges of hotels right on Rue 172. A fan room with cable TV and
cold water shower is $4, right across the street from Shanghai Bar is a
hotel with Aircon, Cable TV, and hot shower for $6, and my hotel had a brand
new remote control AC, remote controlled cable TV, hot water shower, and
minifrig for $10. From any of these hotels you could walk to most downtown
bars in less than ten minutes, or take a omnipresent “moto” or motorcycle
for a buck.
If you only like
girly bars with girls dancing in bikinis then Cambodia isn’t for you. They
only have hostess bars and freelance bars. One of the better known hostess
bars is Shanghai (on the corner of Rues 51 and 172). There are about twenty
average looking hostesses here. Barfine is $5, and most girls want the
standard between $15-20 for short time and $20-30 for long time. Just a
couple of doors up Rue 51 is Heart of Darkness, which is a popular freelance
bar, but it must get going very late because I was in there on a Friday or
Saturday night at 11pm and there wasn’t even one freelancer there. Also next
to Heart of Darkness is the Pitstop bar, which has both girls and interior
that are unremarkable. A block south of Shanghai is the freelance bar
Walkabout. Girls here expect $20 for a long time, but I should mention it is
very prevalent for the girl to ask to leave after one round and still expect
$15 to $20. My advice would be to pay it. You really don’t want to involve
the authorities in this country, nor do you want the girl to, so make sure
she leaves happy. About three blocks north is Cyrcee Club (Rue 49 and 136).
This club reminds me of Nifty’s. Three or four girls each were all over both
me and my friend and I as soon as we walked into the place, and they were
all pushing short times upstairs from the bar. Here a bf is $7, ST$15,
LT$30. (Sophie’s Bar a few blocks away has a similar reputation.) Two and a
half blocks east and one block north is Sharkey’s (btw Rues 15 and 19, on
Rue 130), Sharkey’s is one of the more famous and long standing bars here.
It is a cross between LA Café Ermita and Margaritaville. LT is $20. There is quite a range of ladies, but
always at least a few lookers every time I went in here. Three blocks north
of Sharkey’s is Barbados on Rue 108. The Dingo bar is also on Rue 108, but I
didn’t notice any hostesses here. Barbados was a very nice looking bar with
some very nice looking hostesses. BF$, ST$ LT$. Two blocks north is a little
gem of a street, Rue 104, just north of the Ferry Port. Here you can find
Rose Bar, OneZeroFour, and Zanzibar. The some of the girls in Zanzibar and
Rose bar are top notch. These along with Barbados were two of my favorite
bars to visit. BF is $7 at Rose Bar and I believe $5 at the other two, most
girls will want the $15-20 ST and $20-30 LT.
One must mention
Martini’s since it is such an institution. It has moved three times, so its
present location is rather far from most of the other bars. It is in the
neighborhood of S-21. To get there traveling south you turn right from
Monivong Blvd onto Rue 360 and take the first right on Rue 105 its only one
block north. It is a large outdoor bar with no roof over the center. There
is a large TV/movie screen where recent movies are projected on one wall.
This is the best bar for an early freelance rendezvous. Girls here will go
for $20 all night, but some may start the negotiation at $30. The girls are
also known to want to leave after a short time when you paid for a long
time. But as I said before, I suggest you just pay them.
One of my favorite
restaurants was California 2. My favorite item was the Baja Fish Tacos,
which don’t have the creamy white sauce but are quite tasty at $3.50 for
three tacos. They also have a bottomless cup of coffee here, which was the
only restaurant that I found with one. Another bar with great food is Rose
bar. They have an extensive menu. My favorite item was the fish filets with
saffron cream sauce. The food at Martini’s and Sharkey’s is of average
quality at an average price. Sharkey’s has a much bigger menu than
Martini’s.
If you want a beach
vacation also you might want to check out Sihanoukville, which is about four
hours by bus from Phnom Penh. The Expat hotel and bar area is up on a hill,
Victory Hill, about a km from the ocean. The nicer beach hotels are on
Ochheuteal Beach, which is about 4-5 km away, so if you want to get around
you would probably need a vehicle there, although there are many motos
available to transport you. So in closing I
heartily recommend a trip to Cambodia.
A question for a
good mate of mine, Andy Odell. Is it true that you have gotten
back with one Adel Lusang who made your life so difficult while you were
here?

A couple dining at
the VFW encountered a difficult situation. The girlfriend of the
veteran ordered a chicken salad plate. When it was delivered, after
one bite she discovered they had served a tuna salad plate instead.
Regretfully, the lady is extremely allergic to tuna fish and became ill.
She was rushed to the hospital for treatment. When the customer
complained, initially, the waitress and supervisor were indifferent and
their attitude upset the customer. The VFW manager was not present at
this time. The next day was a different story. The customer
wrote "The VFW committee met this AM - discipline taken against those
determined not to have followed procedures - medical expenses reimbursed
plus some $ for pain and suffering - extremely apologetic and expressed
determination to avoid re-occurrence - all-in-all: very quick redress
of grievances - kudos for way this was handled." (This incident
was regrettable and the initial response was out of line but the
professionalism, concern and response by the VFW committee and the manager
the next day was outstanding. Well done guys!)
When that Subic-Clark toll road is finally open to
traffic one of the first places I will visit is the Ocean Adventure in
Subic. The reason I am so interested is because I met two very
interesting guys, Tim and Scott that together were instrumental in putting
this place together. They visited the Blue Boar Inn for a few drinks
one night and the conversation was interesting, fun, entertaining,
informative and full of great stories. These guys train whales,
porpoises, and other animals and have worked with movie producers which over
the years have provided them the ability to relate many hilarious and
interesting stories. I was not aware that the Ocean Adventure site in
Subic also provided hotel accommodation right fronting on one of the best
beaches in Subic. I won't dwell on this anymore because I want you to
check out the website www.oceanadventure.com.ph which will provide all the details you need.
My recommendation, visit the Ocean Adventure but make it a two or three day
holiday and enjoy the entire facilities available.
The Angeles City Hash House Harriers are hosting their 1500th run on
Saturday and Sunday, 5-6 May and this will be a biggie. I have been
told that the famous "Kalbo" will be here for the event along with his Mrs
and twenty odd kids or so. Kalbo was the owner of the Birds of
Paradise and was a pioneer of the AC Hash. The cost for the two day
event will be P2,000 for the men and P1600 for the ladies which in this day
of equal opportunity I can't understand the price difference. I have
observed many Hash events and found that many of the women outrun, out drink
and out sing the men and when the opportunity is there, out eat them as
well. I do not know the times these runs kick off so contact the
Anchorage Inn at E-mail: singlemalt_angeles@hotmail.com. Oops, just noticed that if the
fees were not paid by 1 March then the cost is P2200. I guess that at
this late date everybody is signed up. I have to get there just to see
Kalbo once again and the Dragon Lady who in her younger years could really
produce those little rugrats. I guess the reason Kalbo ran so much was
just to give the little lady a break!
TAPS
I was informed that one AKC Bergh, from Sundsvalls,
Sweden, 63 years old passed away early Sunday morning, 1 Apr 07. AKC had
lived here in the Philippines for 20 years and had made many friends in that
time. Regretfully, he fell down the stairs at the SM Mall and never fully
recovered. He became weaker and weaker until the gates of heaven opened
for him.
I was saddened to learn that Edward W. "Bill" Dunlap of
Ocean Shirts fame passed away on 14 Apr 07 in Houston, Texas. He lost his
fight with cancer and is survived by wife Lorna and daughter Laura, he was 62
years old. Bill came to the Philippines in 1986 and founded "Ocean Shirts"
in 1987. I remember sitting with Bill quite a few years ago and enjoyed
his stories of how he came to create "Ocean Shirts" and the hard work he had to
put in to get it off the ground and make it such a success. That damn evil
disease of cancer just takes too many good folks away from us and I pray that
medical research eventually finds a cure for most forms of cancer but I fear
that it may not happen in my lifetime. Bill Dunlap did good and he will be
long remembered through his wonderfully created shirts. (Will, thanks for
passing this sad news on to me).
Be advised not to have any passport, visa or any other Immigration dealings
with this lady known as Angelita Jose or Angelita Median, who at one time used
to be employed with the Immigration Office on 7th Street. She was relieved
of her duties a few years ago but I have been advised that she is still
operating in the Angeles City Area but has no official connection with the BID.
TOURISTS OF THE MONTH
There I am sitting in my office nursing a bad back and broken ribs and two
"happy wanderers" trudged up the stairs to greet the ole Horse. I was sure
happy to see these two lads that wanted to meet "the Horse" because I knew that
I would not have to drag my ass out to search the streets for my May Tourist of
the Month.
As it turned out these were two interesting men and I better mention their names
before I lose my notes. On the left is Del Radcliff, born and raised in
Alabama, retired from the Air Force in 74 and has been a semi-drifter ever since
except for the six years he lived in Honduras. I do believe he still knows
a fine lady there that he kind of misses. The other lad, Wehuda Frankel, was
born and raised in Jerusalem, Israel but left there in 1982 to head for the
States. He lived in Guatemala for 12 years before heading to Las Vegas
where he worked in the Barbary Coast but left that job 20 years
ago. Even through all the years since he left he has kept in touch with
the Barbary Coast owner and now will be returning there to work as the
Reservations Manager. That is so unusual, not only to be rehired after 20
years but to work for an owner who has kept a hotel in the family name for so
long and also owns the well known, popular El Cortez Hotel and Casino on
downtown Freemont Street. I have eaten many a breakfast at the El Cortez,
it is know as a friendly Blue Collar hotel. They are both heading for Las
Vegas so I hope they will meet up with some of my old friends like Walt Menecke,
Bill Ramiriz and others some early morning at the BX on Nellis AFB. For
sure, when I make it back to Vegas I will look up Wehuda and hope that Del is
still hanging around as well. During their visit here they could not quite
get comfortable enough to change to a permanent address but I sure hope they
will return for a visit so I can buy them a couple of drinks and hear of their
adventures. By the way, Wehuda's mother still lives in Israel and he
returns for a visit each Dec. Hey Fellas, thanks for stopping by my
stable, you made my day!

THE GARFIELD GANG
For such a small bar Garfields, on Perimeter Road, has a hell of a lot of
ladies working for them. Every once in a while they like me to show off
their latest crop of sweet waitresses. I don't mind doing this because I
kind of like this bar, even though it is off the beaten track for Fields Ave
punters it has the distinction of being right in the middle of the action for
Perimeter Road. This bit of a pub does not have dancing girls but their
waitresses are very, very friendly. Of course, not all the ladies pictured
here are beauties and I do spot a couple of chubby rice eaters but all in all
the selection is very admirable. Garfields does most of their business in
late afternoon and early evening so a lot of tourists may miss out but it is a
very popular place for the local expats to gather. They have
air-conditioned comfort, cold beer and hot women so take the time to stop by and
get acquainted.
WHERE IS T-TIMES KEVIN?
I wrote about T-Times Kevin last month and now, as so often happens in this
town, more information comes to the surface of how one man took advantage of so
many. I have no regrets in providing this information for one and all to
read so that it will be a warning to those who live and invest in this town that
it is not always the Filipino that may try to take advantage of you.
Beware of that fellow expat with a smile and smooth tongue who is really a
rattlesnake in disguise, ready to bite you in the ass and your pocketbook.
Over the years I have met and heard about many of those rattlesnakes and do not
think for one moment that Angeles City, today, is rattlesnake free. Talk to some
folks that recently, were bitten by the well known "Mr. Ticket". Horse,
I notice from your
last issue that Kevin from T Times bar has left owing Mo P60,000...well he
isn't the only one. Kevin has disappeared owing personal money loans ranging
from P20,000 up to P400,000. My own being nearly P100,000. He managed to
spin us all a sad tale and abuse our kindness and willingness to help. His
tales of woe were all a pack of lies. He borrowed money from different
people around Angeles and managed to keep the loans a secret from each
other. Legal advice has been sought as to the finding of Kevin and hopefully
the pay back of all his debts. The Office Of The Lupong Tagapamaya has
written up the Certification Of File Action against Kevin. The files against
him are numerous and his name at the Malabanias Barangay Council is very
well known. After numerous appearance summons from
all the complainants, in which Kevin evaded every appearance, Kevin sold his
bar and fled with the money, leaving behind some very angry people. It has
also come to light he is wanted in Guam for monies owing and also fled the
US owing over $100,000. We found the money he borrowed was spent up on
his craving for female company, drinking and the front for a fake picture
of being able to pay us all back. Even when he gave us the story he was flat
broke, he was spotted in several bars surrounded by girls with drinks, drunk
out of his mind. He was evicted from the Wobbly Boot Hotel due to the fact
the owner was fed up with guys turning up looking for Kevin and their money. So Horse warn everyone if approached
by 'Kevin the Con-Man' , you will have more luck taking P100,000 and putting
it on a roulette table and getting your money back than placing one peso
in the palm of this man's hand. I hope the people that are owed money get to
bring this man to justice as he just crawls around the world looking for his
next prey. He can't hide for ever!!!!!!
I am pleased to report that the
NBI from Manila visited Angeles City to inspect some clubs and they did
follow proper procedure by coordinating with the City Director prior to
making the inspections. They visited the Pink Lady Club in the Oasis
Compound and also one other Club, Filipino owned. At the second
location they did take some ladies to Manila for further investigation.
If they inspect an ACTA member Club in a future visit there should not be
any problem because of ACTA's scheduled monthly inspections in which
compliance with all City requirements are closely looked at.
THE 24 HOUR MASSAGE
It used to be located next to T-Times but Alan
Schlaadt (Kiwi) sold the rights to the building to the new T-Times owner but
retained the name for his use. I guess that means we can expect an
expansion of the T-Times Club but have not checked that out yet.
Anyway, Alan will relocate the 24 Hour Massage to his new location on
Zepplin Street, Hensonville, across the street from the old Silver Bullet
Bar. Alan is doing it up big time as in addition to the massage
operation he will be offering a Club in which you can play pool (He will be
in the Friday league), restaurant with a full menu, darts, cable TV, home
deliveries for food, trike for free pick-up and delivery to his place but it
will cost you P50 for the return trip home. Local drinks will be P45
and draft beer will be offered at P40. Oh yes, he will be employing
some dancers and GRO's as well. Long and short communication sessions
will be offered at a reasonable cost. I do believe he will be opening
some time in mid-May but that is not definite. Alan told me he had a
lot of regular customers for the 24 hour massage and he definitely wanted to
get the word out as to where it will be located.
MYSTERY FACE
Once
in a while I happen to meet a young lady that has a certain beauty to her
that goes along with intelligence, good personality, hard working and a
dedicated employee. I snap a picture and then find that it turned out
so well that I want to publish it here but not tell you too much about her.
She becomes, sort of, my mystery lady. In this particular case the
young, single lady works as a secretary to a local expat businessman who
considers her his right arm for keeping him on track with a multitude of
tasks. She is in effect, an executive secretary who is professional in
appearance and abilities and more often than not has to cope with 12 or more
hours per working day.
Now, you are wondering, how old is she, what is her
name, what is her educational background, does she have a boyfriend and
where can you find her? Ah, that is the rub - if I tell you all that
then she is no longer a mystery. I can assure you that she works in
Angeles City and does not have much free time for a social life. Is
she available for courtship? Hee Hee, I have no idea mate, that is
another part of the mystery!
FATHER AND SON
I always enjoy meeting a father and son act here because I get a bit
sentimental. My old man and I never got around to hitting any bars
together or having some drinks and for sure, we never got close to the
Philippines. But I was fortunate to have my son visit me here when he was
16 years old and I was able to introduce him to the old Fire Empire when it was
located on MacArthur Highway, in Dau. He also made it here after he was in
the Air Force and that was a good time for me as well. Now, I ran into Joe
and Eugene Ross at the Hang-out last month as they were enjoying a few beers
together. The son, Joe, is working in a hotel in Dutch Harbor, Alaska and
this is his second time here. He remembers his first visit here when
within 3 weeks he managed to have 9 overnighters. Dad has two sons and one
daughter but only Joe has managed to enjoy the cultural benefits of Angeles
City. It was fun to talk to this duo and I can bet that when Joe is in
Alaska, freezing his nuts off, he relaxes and relives his moments in Angeles
City.

KLUB CLASS
Hey, I really liked this place. Does it sound like I was surprised?
Yep, you got it, I went there for my first visit thinking I was not going to
enjoy myself. I expected loud blaring music, boredom because of no
dancers, a bunch of youngsters hogging up the dance floor and no one to talk to.
Instead, after struggling up the stairs (I nearly needed oxygen) I found a place
that one could take their wife, girlfriend or even stag and have a good time.
It was a great layout and I was impressed with the sound system and the lighting
effects. The music was loud but Richard did his magic and the sound was
directed at the dance floor and somehow one could sit around the half circle
seating counter and still carry on a conversation without yelling. This is
what they need at Nero's! If you want to get a bit further away from the
sound of the music then they offer a sort of lounge area with comfortable
couches, chairs to sit in and have a conversation. Then, to really get
away I recommend the garden deck, one more flight up. Damn, those stairs
again but it only took me ten minutes to make it up there and the view was worth
it. I must say the staff were very nice to an old crippled man like me and
held their breath as I tried to make it up the entrance stairs and also the
stairs to the deck. I could almost hear the ladies taking a breath of
relief when they realized I would not collapse. I am not an expert on
Clubs, nor am I qualified to say which one will succeed and which one will not
but, like anyone, I can voice an opinion or a feeling. Many people talking
about this new Club ask "what niche does it fill?" I really do not care
what the answer is to that question. For me, it is an idea, it is
different, and I feel there are enough clubs around that provide scantily dressed dancers to
satisfy the voyeuristic eyes of anyone coming to the entertainment area and
there is room for a Club to feature only GRO's and forego the dancers.
But, my suggestion to Richard was that I would prefer the GRO's in mini-skirts
and not in their normal street clothes in which many were just in shirt and
Jeans. The GRO's, the night I was there spent a lot of time on the dance
floor and I would have liked to have seen some nice legs instead of seeing some
dressed as if they just came from the farm. Richard said he would consider
this suggestion so I will try to make it up those stairs again to see if he
changed anything. By the way, the GRO's on board were friendly, as were
all the staff and it is a comfortable environment. I never did like the
Pick-up as it was just too cavernous for me and regretfully, I did feel a bit
old there. At Klub Class I still felt old but in a comfortable way and
nobody seemed to notice. For sure I will visit this Club again as soon as
my arthritic knees allow me to make the climb up and also allow me to reach the
safety of the street without falling on my ass. For those of you in better
shape than me, please make the effort to check out this "Klub" I sort of think
you will like it. Oh yes, before I forget, the local drinks are P85,
Ladies Drinks are P150 and that other item is P1,300 which I guess is in line
with the rest of Fields Ave.
I WOULD IF I COULD
YES, YES, YES, WOOF, WOOF, LEAD THIS OLD HORSE FROM MY
STABLE TO THE STAMPEDE where these two fillies are located six or
seven days a week. Actually, they are sisters working in Cherry's Bar but
every day there is a stampede to locate these two ladies and get them moved on
out to a more comfortable location. They are sisters from Samar, Nine (left), 21
and Teresa, 19 with Teresa not being deflowered yet. Jimbo introduced me
to them when I went in to see him and indicated that I need to find a good
looking gal for this month's column. I told him I wanted to be inspired
and he told me he had just the right gals for me. He was right on, as
these ladies not only looked good, great figures, but winning personalities as
well. In their family they have four brothers and sisters and have worked
at Cherry's for only a few months. As usual after taking this picture I
have not had the time to make it back to say hello to them and to monitor how
popular they might be. I will take Jimbo's word for it when he says that
they are kept quite busy.
I asked them what age bracket would they accept if a serious contender
appeared on the scene and they indicted a 45 to 50 year old would be acceptable.
But of course, they told me they would make an exception for an old 69 year old
horse. Now guys, seriously, what American or Australian 21 year old women
would would even consider going out with anyone over 50 years old without
calling the police first? Ah, Nine and Teresa, let your imaginations go
wild. It would be like consuming a double ice cream cone on a very hot day
or even sitting between them and enjoying their attention and smiles would be a
treat as well. These two sisters would be worth whatever ladies drinks you
bought them. Remember though, get to Cherry's early or get in line.
OF THE THREE PICTURES BELOW, THE FIRST ONE, A CARTOON IS SELF
EXPLANATORY. THE OTHER TWO PICTURES HAVE TO BE OF A NORTHWEST AIRLINES
FLIGHT ATTENDANT ON HOLIDAY. TAKE MY ADVICE, FLY EVA OR CHINA AIRLINES.
TOURISTS OF THE MONTH
I sure hope I have the right names here as I checked my notes and found that
I had two other lads listed that stopped by my stable and I can't remember which
was which. But, I am pretty sure that in this picture I have the pleasure
of introducing Neil Smith (Left) and Andrew Ballam, both of whom are from
Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Andy lives in St. Kilda and Neil hangs his
hat in Mill Park. Hope I got all that right and they wanted to mention
that they are good mates of Ray Kelly. They stayed at the Royal Amsterdam
this time around and really enjoyed the rooms and the convenient location.
Neil has been married for 28 years and is still in love with his Filipina wife.
Andy is single and is in love with all the girls he has met so far. I
guess there should have been a lot more questions I should have asked them but
forgot to do so. Usually I would ask a visitor which Club was his favorite
but I guess I forgot to do so. Not to worry, they enjoyed their visit to
the Blue Boar Inn so I will give my own joint a plug. I'm sure Andy is
biting at the bit to get back here as no doubt, his social life might not be
quite so active in St. Kilda. Thanks for stopping in fellas, enjoyed
meeting you.
10th ANNIVERSARY FOR THE VFW
It is a good thing that my stable is close to the VFW or else I would have
missed out on some great food, entertainment and the chance to socialize with a
bunch of old soldiers. How the hell did 10 years go by so fast? Half
of the street in front of the "V" was closed and a covered tent set up with
tables and chairs. It was free food for all the Veteran members and stupid
me, I left my Life Member card at home and the guy checking the cards was not
going to let me in. My mate Tony vouched for me but I was a bit
embarrassed about it all. Actually I was a bit of a Horse's Ass so I guess
the next time I will remember not to leave home without "my card".
Compared to VFW organizations around the world I think this is one of the best
despite the politics and the occasional bickering and arguing that goes on but
what else do you expect with a bunch of cranky old soldiers with too much time
on their hands. To tell the truth, there are only a handful of Vets that
will stand up and volunteer for various tasks but there are a lot of
complainers. I don't go there as much as I should but I know that if the
VFW was not there, I sure as hell would miss it. I hope I am around for
the 20th Anniversary.
ANGELES CITY BUSINESSMEN'S LUNCHEON
Once a month our local businessmen get together for a luncheon at various
locations. It is a membership club and the cost of the lunch for members
is P550 and is a time for the lads to get together, eat heartily, exchange
information, announce special events, hold a raffle and keep wondering when
Peter O'Donnell is going to come down with laryngitis. There is a bit of
entertainment at some of the Hosting Clubs, not all, but the mood is always
jovial and a great opportunity to see your mates and also meet some new folks.
During the year they build up a fund and each year around the Christmas season
they donate money to various charitable organizations. They might be die
hard businessmen and a few might be considered a bit stingy but when it comes to
putting out a helping hand to the needy they all have big hearts. Last
month I attended the luncheon hosted by Steve at the Magic Moments Club and what
a fine event it was. The food was fantastic and Steve told me that he did
the cooking himself so I made a try to be first on line but ended up second.
I was grateful to see that the bread was unbuttered because I am one of the few
that dislikes butter. Now, the food was great but the two legged scenery
was rather tasteful as well. I took a few pictures just to give the
readers a reason for them to check out this Club when you get to town.
Remember mate, business is business but there is always time for a bit of
pleasure.
THE ORCHID INN BOYS DO IT AGAIN!
They put their heads together, held a brain session, then
someone came up with a bright idea. Let's do something with the front
parking area! Then, bingo - the "Wild Delicatessen" and Coffee Shop was
born. Man, I was surprised all to hell as I walked down A. Santos Street
heading to the Wild Orchid to partake of my favorite fried rice with pineapple
meal and suddenly I saw this new Deli staring me in the eye. Wow! I
had to check it out even though it was late. I went in and did not want to
leave, not only because it was rather unique but because the air-conditioning
was pumping out some very cool air. Outside, they had put some nice tables
and chairs in a relaxing garden environment. I plan to go there one
afternoon or night and relax with a cup of coffee and check out all the action
across the street. By the way, I have to talk to Ron W. and find out what
the plans are for the area just behind the Wild Orchid pool area heading down
the street towards Johnny's. If you remember that warehouse style building housed the short lived Platinum Club and the
Ministry of Music owned by Big Bill of the Winchester Club fame. It did
not last too long but the picture to the left showed two employees of that club
and I sure do wonder where the hell they are now.
Ah memories are sweet. For a while there was a few words
of anger exchanged between management of the Platinum and the Wild Orchid over
the loud music from the Platinum over to the Wild Orchid. It settled down
after a while but the downfall of the Platinum came about when their Horse
Racing bookie operation fell afoul of the law. So, that is a bit of
history, now I have to get my horse ears to the ground and find out what the
future holds for this site. Oops, 10 PM when I am typing this and I
decided to try and call Ron Wakely to see if I could get some info. He was
already in bed but was nice enough to give me a bit of info. The new site
will see a very nice hotel extension of the Wild Orchid constructed. The
design calls for 8 floors but they will start with three to test the market.
There will be another pool and a duplicate of the pool bar that is so popular at
the Wild Orchid. This is all exciting news and Ron was in so good a mood
that he took the time to clue me in on his project at Subic. They have
already started construction on the "Wild Orchid Subic Beach Resort" which will
be a very nice 7 story resort hotel featuring a 412 sq.mtr swimming pool and 16
cabins on the beach. How about rooms with flat screen TVs and jacuzzis?
I wanted more information but this is enough to start and I had to let Ron get
back to sleep before he got cranky.
Man, Subic is getting one hell of a face life with Mo there
building his hotels, Wild Orchid Group building a class place, the Arizona Hotel
upgrading, and so much more. There are more and more expats moving to
Subic to get away from Angeles City. But, not me, I don't care, Angeles
City is the place for me but I do look forward to when I can drive to Subic in
40 minutes but maybe not as early as Dec. I read where the Japanese have
fallen 15% behind the completion schedule and the President Gloria has told them
to get their act together.

This Horse is dragging ass right now. It is hot as hell
here and I think it affects old folks like me. Of course it does not help
to go through this dry season drama with the Electric companies again.
Brown outs, unannounced, scheduled, then schedule changes and the dumb assholes
schedule a brown out on a Monday night from 11 PM to 0700 the next day when
people are trying to sleep. Of course, they wait for the hottest time of
the year to do all this crap. Question, does it improve service?
Answer: Nope! Oh well, the only thing to do is "suck it up", live
with it and take 20 showers a day. Shit, I forgot, no electricity - no
water! Priscilla - quick, fill up the garbage cans with water again.
I'm out of here - remember, be kind to horses!
