DECEMBER 2007
Dear ACLU members, Department Stores, U.S. State and Federal Government officials, Fundamentalist Muslims and others that may be offended by the word Christmas, guess what, kiss my butt, here in the Philippines Christmas is alive and well and nobody is offended by the word, the wearing of crosses, nativity scenes in private or government locations, school plays, hymns being sung, etc. Christmas is celebrated with no fear of offending anyone and it is so sad that in the United States this is no longer the case. So, happily, my health allows me to, again, don my Santa suit and make my rounds of two government hospitals with charity wards and bring a taste of Christmas to patients on Christmas Eve. Mrs Horse and I will also host 110 children from low income families at our farm for a day of food, games, prizes and gifts for each child from Santa. At the hospitals the smiles and sometimes tears from the patients makes me so happy to share CHRISTmas with so many. There are many who support me in this effort with donations and assistance so that we can reach more and more kids and patients who would not have a very fulfilling Christmas. For all readers of this column I wish you an advance very merry Christmas and a fun filled New Years Eve. Ain't it great to be alive!!
TIDBITS
Greetings to Ed McKay, Keesler AFB, MS, Maso Garret and many thanks from Mrs Horse and I for your donation to our Christmas charity, it really helped a lot, Saw Lee Huat (Alex) from Singapore. Welcome back long time resident Ken Harris who just returned from a job in Southern Sudan, Bart Darfur to be exact. He has a few interesting stories about that place. Ken used to own the Pecos Pete's Bar on Perimeter Road. Mike Salaris, Gothenburg, Sweden and Roy Garbutt who sent boxes of clothes, toys, slippers, etc. from Australia for our charity project.
Subject: Fw: TRAVEL ADVISORY : FROM US EMBASSY MANILA
Please share this with your friends and relatives. Please be informed of the recent travel advisory to the United States. However, not only pirated VCDs/DVDs are on the hot list. Customs officials are also looking into fake bags like Louis Vuitton, Coach, etc. Please be informed that the American Association of Publishers (AAP) has also alerted the American customs officers to check out for pirated books. This information was given to me by Patricia Judd of the AAP.
Please warn all nursing graduates who plan to take the NCLEX and CGF exams in the States not to bring in these pirated books because there will be a penalty of automatic deportation as violation of intellectual property rights. If you know anyone going from the Philippines and coming back to the USA , with "pasalubongs" and "padalas," please read this important enclosed advisory from the American Embassy in Manila . Please share with your friends. Just a friendly reminder: if you have plans of going to the U.S. , please take precautionary measures on all "padalas," especially those containing fake/pirated compact discs/DVDs. US Embassy employees have been given an advisory that as US Gov't employees, we should abide by the U.S.laws, including Intellectual Property Rights (anti-piracy) laws. As an additional incentive, the Consular Section recently received a report that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) searched the bag of a Filipino entering the U.S. on NW 72 in Detroit. During the search, 70-80 compact discs, 30-40 empty DVD jackets and 10-20 DVDs were found. Since the travelers were not American citizens, their visas were canceled and they returned to the Philippines . If they had been Americans, they could have been subject to arrest and criminal prosecution in addition to civil fines and penalties. Please remember even ONE pirated item can jeopardize your trip. Also, the fingerprinting system has successfully been instituted in all port of entries. I suggest you bring extra identification cards in addition to your passport to facilitate your entry in the US Immigration. I hope this is helpful to you. Thanks and regards U.S. Commercial Service American Embassy Manila Tel: +632-888-4088 ext.
Advance Merry Christmas wishes go out to the following folks who wrote to me: David Chambers, Thailand, Don Taylor, Eugowra, NSW, Maso Garrett, Muntinlupa University, PI, Joe Sclafani, Subic.
From the ‘How Dumb Government Agencies Department’: The Philippines has 3, and with the competition of the Subic-Angeles-Tarlac expressway, 4 toll roads. These are in good condition and save hours of driving time. Until a few years ago, no motorcycles were allowed to use these highways. Under some pressure from Senator Juan Ponce Enrlie, a regulation was passed allowing bikes with engines larger than 400 CC access to these roads. For some unknown reason 3 months ago this privilege was suspended. Nobody could or would pass along any information why the ban was reinstated.
The Philippines has a number of active motorcycle clubs. The most well known are the Mad Dogs (www.mdmc.org ). They have influential members who, like Sen. Enrile, were able to put enough pressure on the highway department and with the threat of going to the courts, temporarily rescind the ban. Nobody can figure out why. The bikes that ply the toll ways are well maintained, keep a good sppe rate, pay the full toll and help relieve congestion on the surface roads. It just goes to show how dumb some government agencies can be.

AMERICA IS GOING TO THE DOGS FOR SURE... NEED TO GET RID OF THEM ASAP... 33 Senators Voted Against English as America's Official Language June 6, 2007. On Wed, 6 Jun 2007 23:35:23 -0500, "Colonel Harry Riley USA ret" wrote:
Senators,
Your vote against an amendment to the Immigration Bill 1348, to make English America's official language is astounding. On D-Day no less when we honor those that sacrificed in order to secure the bedrock character and principles of America. I can only surmise your vote reflects a loyalty to illegal aliens.
I don't much care where you come from, what your religion is, whether you're black, white or some other color, male or female, democrat, republican or independent, but I do care when you're a United States Senator, representing citizens of America and vote against English as the official language of the United States.
Your vote reflects betrayal, political surrender, violates your pledge of allegiance, dishonors historical principle, rejects patriotism, borders on traitorous action and, in my opinion, makes you unfit to serve as a United States Senator... impeachment, recall, or other appropriate action is warranted. Worse, 4 of you voting against English as America's official language are presidential candidates: Senator Biden, Senator Clinton, Senator Dodd, and Senator Obama. Those 4 Senators vying to lead America but won't or don't have the courage to cast a vote in favor of English as America's official language when 91% of American citizens want English officially designated as our language. This is the second time in the last several months this list of Senators have disgraced themselves as political hacks... unworthy as Senators and certainly unqualified to serve as President of the United States.
If America is as angry as I am, you will realize a back-lash so stunning it will literally rock you out of your panties... and preferably, totally out of the United States Senate. The entire immigration bill is a farce... your action only confirms this really isn't about America; it's about self-serving politics... despicable at best. "Never argue with an idiot; they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."
The following senators voted against making English the official language of America:
Akaka (D-HI), Bayh (D-IN), Biden (D-DE) Wants to be President? Bingaman (D-NM), Boxer (D-CA), Cantwell (D-WA ), Clinton (D-NY) Wants to be President? Dayton (D-MN), Dodd (D-CT) Wants to be President? Domenici (R-NM) Coward, protecting his Senate seat...Durbin (D-IL), Feingold (D-WI) Not unusual for him, Feinstein ( D-CA), Harkin (D-IA), Inouye (D-HI), Jeffords (I-VT), Kennedy (D-MA), Kerry (D-MA) Wanted to be President, Kohl (D-WI), Lautenberg (D-NJ), Leahy (D-VT), Levin (D-MI), Lieberman (D-CT) Disappointment here.....Menendez (D-NJ), Mikulski (D-MD), Murray (D-W A), Obama (D-IL) Wants to be President? Correction - Last month I listed those fine gentlemen that donated the money necessary to get the ACTA Tourist Police bicycle patrol on the road but I had one of those "where did my mind go" moments when I listed "Ralph Meeker" instead of Neil Meeker and mentioned "Roadhouse" instead of Roadies. Sorry Neil, no excuse, my brain was thinking one thing and my fingers went a different way.
Imagine being able to live on this motor yacht full time and being able to enjoy the benefits of the Subic Yacht Club as well. This is way out of my league, not only could I not afford such a life but I would have no idea how to operate this boat. The last boat I was on was way back in 1955 when I took this lovely lady named Diane Bartel to Central Park in New York and rented a row boat for an hour. She was a fellow student at Bryant High School. I was proud of myself for being able to maneuver that boat around without dumping us both in the water. OK, I had to delete what I originally had here because the owner had asked me to mention that it was up for sale and who to contact. Then recently, he told me it was already sold and to disregard. But, it took me ages to figure out how to transfer the picture he sent me to my column and I just did not want to waste all that effort. It was such a nice picture that I decided to post it anyway so any potential buyers out there can see what they missed out on. Plus, I wanted a ride on this beauty and now will never get the opportunity. No problem, who ever heard of horses riding on yachts anyway!

My good friend Tom Deasey forwarded the following article from the 25 Jul 07 issue of the Manila Times to me and asked if I had seen it. I was not aware of it and had not heard anything regarding these actions by Commissioner Libanan. I am including it here to acknowledge that it was a long time coming, but at long last there is someone heading up the Bureau of Immigration (BI) with the guts to deal with the crooks that lie within. Tom's life was turned upside down because of a few crooked folks but at least, now, the shoe was placed on the other foot.
3 more Immigration workers fired
By William B. Depasupil Reporter
THREE more employees of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) have been dismissed from the service for alleged involvement in extortion and other anomalies, bringing to five the total number of BI employees sacked since Commissioner Marcelino Libanan launched his anticorruption campaign after assuming office in May. Ordered dismissed from their jobs were Viriginia Libunao, administrative aide IV; Joselito Cruz, immigration officer I; and Jose Gundayao, security guard 1. As a result of their dismissal, the retirement benefits of the employees were forfeited and banned from reemployment in the government service.
Records showed that Libunao was charged with having allegedly conspired with certain members of the Philippine National Police’s criminal investigation and detection group in kidnapping an American named Thomas Deasey and threatening to kill his family if he will not pay the P2-million ransom. It was also alleged that after Deasey paid the P2 million, Cruz facilitated the American’s illegal departure by not encoding his name in the computer as he knew that the passenger’s name is on the BI watch list.
Libanan strictly warned all immigration officials and employees that he won’t hesitate to administrative and criminally prosecute all those involved in illegal activities. He also vowed to act swiftly on all administrative complaints pending against any BI official or employee in line with the thrust of his administration to professionalize the rank and file of the bureau. He advised anyone who might be victimized by corrupt immigration employees to immediately filed their complaints with his office so that the proper action could be taken against the erring personnel.
IN MEMORIAM -- This week the University of Kentucky removed The Holocaust from its school curriculum because it "offended" the Muslim population which claims it never occurred. This is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving into it. It is now more than 60 years since the Second World War in Europe ended. This e-mail is being sent as a memorial chain, in memory of the six million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians and 1,900 Catholic priests who were murdered, massacred, raped, burned, starved and humiliated with the German and Russian peoples looking the other way! Now more than ever, with Iran among others claiming the Holocaust to be "a myth," it is imperative to make sure the world never forgets. This e-mail is intended to reach 40 million people worldwide! Join us and be a link in the memorial chain and help us distribute it around the world. Please send this e-mail to 10 people you know and ask them to continue the memorial chain. (another example of the stupidity that is becoming so prevalent in the United States these days - maybe I am the only one that could care less if a Muslim community is offended at anything)

There has been a great improvement in the cooperation between ACTA and the personnel assigned to PNP Station 4 with Capt Louie Tan being of great positive assistance. Together, under the leadership of City Director Col Gaddi many improvements in traffic control and removal of obstructions along Fields Ave and beyond have been accomplished and plans are being formulated for even more actions. Despite these positive actions there is always a possibility of necessary changes to assure that the objectives of the City Director are met in a timely, aggressive, positive manner. With this in mind it has been heard that there may be some personnel changes at Station 4 in the near future that will bring some people on board capable of dealing with the unique requirements of the entertainment zone.
Well, a bit of an update is called for here. Just after I wrote this item the Commander of Station four, Col Imperial was transferred to Station one in Angeles City, the second time for this lad. Capt Louie Tan was transferred to the Friendship Station located just as you turn into Clark. He will be the Commander there and I am sure the security in the Friendship area will be improved with Capt Tan at the helm. The new Station four Commander is PSupt Pedro G. Ramos and the Deputy Commander is PSI Ronaldo P. Lorenzo.
I regret to report that another American, one John Daigneault, 70 years old, suffering from Parkinson's disease, was arrested last month on charges of being with two underage girls and maybe one more charge of rape. I won't go into details at this time but the circumstances of this arrest and the charges smell like rotten fish. At the time I am writing this the poor guy is lying on the floor at the City Jail and has not been to any hearing yet. I was told by a close friend of his who is following this case that he could have avoided incarceration if he had been able to come up with a rather large sum of money on the day he was picked up. Guess what, Friday, banks closed, weekend in limbo. In this particular case, the police at Station four were not involved. John has retained the services of Attorney Willie Rivera and I fired off an Email to the American Embassy so they would know that, yet again, another American finds himself a guest at Hotel Shithole.

In all the years that I have been here I never became familiar with Morong, Bataan, in fact I never heard about it until recently. It seems that this was a hidden paradise only just at the far end of Subic. Last month Mort Jacobson stopped by my stable to tell me about his Mymar Beach Resort located in Lingating, Poblacion, Morong Bataan and I found out that a lot of foreigners are investing there by buying up lots and building houses. Even our Mayor, Blue Boy has a retreat there. When the new Toll road from Clark to Subic is completed it will not be that long of a drive to get to Morong. Only two years ago you could have purchased lots there for only P2 or P3 thousand pesos a square meter but recently that has gone from 6, to 8 thousand and even higher. Mort has just taken over this Beach Resort and it is located in an area that has a white sand beach front with no rocks. Sounds good. At the time I did not get any pricing details so if you are interested give Mort or his lovely wife Myline a call at 09185561169 (Mort) or 09195182446. After the toll road is finished I will visit him as he has offered me my first night for free. I told him, since I am a bit cheap, I would only stay one night - only kidding, I may stay for two nights.
The 1230 Pizza owner, Charlie, is an old friend of mine and he asked that I pass on the following information to my readers: 1230 Pizza is happy to announce that beginning December 1st, they will launch an all new Chicken Wing recipe. According to store manager, Ian Huypungco, “the new recipe has passed the taste tests with our customer base with flying colors!” He went on to say, “Everyone who tried the new wings agreed that they were moister and better tasting than the old recipe.” The new Chicken Wings will be marinated in “Ian’s Special Spices” and since the new recipe contains no batter, customers will receive more pieces per order, for less money. The wings can be ordered with 1230 Pizza’s three award winning flavors: Original BBQ, Honey BBQ and Hot & Spicy. 1230 Pizza is conveniently located along Perimeter Road at Checkpoint and is open daily from 10:00 a.m to 1:00 a.m. All orders are always delivered FREE. For more information call 892-7654. Hey Charlie, this horse is chomping at the bit to give these ole chicken wings a taste and I like them hot and spicy.
The following comments were forwarded to me by a reader of this column who knew that in the past I have advised readers to be alert to their bills when drinking at the Doll House because of reports of the entertainers being a bit coy with their ordering of ladies drinks. There has been more than one person who has had to go to the police to settle a bill properly. Be advised that this establishment does NOT employ an expat manager. Now, how does one avoid this situation? My procedure is go in and enjoy the place, look at the ladies, have a drink by myself and do not buy any ladies drinks and check my bill after each order. But, if I was to order a ladies drink, I would do as I do in any bar I go into, offer a ladies drink and stipulate immediately, "local drink only" and then check the bill immediately upon receipt of that drink. The Doll House is not the only place that fudges a bit on the ladies drinks but quite often a customer who catches the "error" can settle the debate within the bar with the help of an understanding Mamasan or Expat manager. Also, in the majority of the Clubs you don't even have to worry about being careful because the management would not tolerate such an abuse and the workers know this. The Doll House had two American owners, one died recently and the other one does not pay attention to business, he lets the locals run the place. Possibly the Filipino managers are not aware of what is going on and need to be informed so they can take corrective action as I am sure they would not like to see their dancers taking unfair advantage of the customers. OK already, I am trying to be nice here. I would never say do not go in the Doll House as it is a fun place but I would advise one and all to, at all times, be AWARE of your bill as you go. (I would love to know who that policeman was because that is one for the record book)
"Went into Dollhouse after 4 AM, after striking out all night. The girls on stage were much more flirty than I remember in that joint. Hmmm. Called down a girl with a lovely face and adequate body. She ordered a drink. I asked what she ordered. "Gin and milk." Strange, but local, I thought. Conversation was fine. She wanted short time for long time price, so I was about to cut her loose. I checked the bill. It was for Bailey's. P250! Fuck that. I told the girl she was out of line for ordering an imported drink without permission. She bailed. I looked in vain for a waitress or mamasan. Finally I got the mamasan's attention. Her position was that I was only complaining because the girl did not want to go long time (how could she know that so quickly?). I told her to go get the girl, and straighten this out. She split. Once she was gone, I had another thought. The girl would probably lie like a rug, so what's the use? I figured the true bill at P85 for my drink, plus P150 for the girl's Lady drink (the bill said P250 for hers alone), total P235. I took P250 out of my wallet, laid it on the table, and walked out. I got as far as Carousel before I had some dude and a waitress on my ass, claiming that I had not paid my bill.
I said "Fine, let's go to Station 4 and sort this out" When we got to the police station, they made their case in Tagalog, so I really have no idea what was said. I was then given my turn to state my case. I did so. The officer on duty, seeing that both parties were adamant, then took the P250 from the waitress, and then took out his wallet, gave her P500, and asked, "Is everyone happy now?" Both the Dollhouse crew and I were flabbergasted. I tried to tell the policeman that it was not his problem, and he owed nothing, but he seemed so sure of himself, that i quickly surrendered to his solution (besides, it was in my favor!). The three of us quickly retreated from Station 4. I told them that I was amazed, as it was usually the foreigner paying the police. They seemed to agree, but told me not to return to Dollhouse. I wished them a Merry Christmas and went on home. Weird, very weird."

Would you believe that there was another complaint from a different customer about what happened when he rang the bell. He noticed that the ladies were making faces when putting down the tequila shots and so he tasted a few and found that the ladies were gulping down plain water. He refused to pay for the bell ring and vowed never to go back to the Doll House. Holy smokes, that is expensive water but I hope it was, at least, mineral water!
Mark Smith, the famous owner of the Roadhouse Club on Fields Ave had a very difficult month that would have put down a lesser man. First, at 0230 hours, at home, he recognized the symptoms of a heart attack and was able to call Dr. Froi Canlas who responded immediately and transported him the the Divine Shepherd Hospital where he was treated for a very serious heart attack. By noon time he was transported to the Philippine Heart Center in Manila where they performed an angioplasty procedure successfully. Would you believe that by Tuesday he attended the Rotary Club of Clark Centennial meeting in the afternoon and then was informed by his brother that his father had suffered a heart attack as well. A few days later Mark was on his way to the States but sadly, word has reached me that his father did not survive. My heart goes out to Mark regarding the passing of his father but he possesses such an inner strength that I know he will return to Angeles City and continue to continue his dedicated work at the Bahay Bata Children's Center, the Roadhouse and also the ACTA. Also, a special word of my sincere admiration for Mark's right hand, Girlie, his manager at Roadhouse who has stood by Mark for so many years and stood by his side at the hospital. This is one special lady folks, not only because she has put up with Mark for so many years but because this is a working partnership that any businessman should be so lucky to have.
The team of Brian, Charles, Roddy and Disco Dave have nearly completed their renovation of Magic Moments so look for the opening of the "new look" in December.
I only get to the VA Medical Clinic in Manila every four months or so but the importance of this facility to the many retired Filipino and American service members is not lost on the community here in Angeles City and so many other areas in the Philippines. I always dread the long early morning drive for my appointments but then my day brightens when I see nurse Rowena (super slim) Carbon with her ready smile and cheery personality. Rowena is 33 years old and still single and I can't figure out why some guy hasn't snapped this lady up. Granted, most of the guys visiting the Clinic are a bit old and married, but still???????? Now for my double treat! I am one of the lucky guys that has as his primary doctor, the very professional, most understanding person, Dr. Cristina Abella who is also single but does have a beau who is taking too long to court her. Anyway, these two ladies makes the long trip to Manila much more bearable than one would expect. Actually, to tell the truth I believe all the personnel at the VA Clinic are very professional, polite and most helpful. The equipment in the X-ray lab and the eye clinic are as up to date as any hospital in the States and the folks running those two areas are top rate. Aw hell, I better stop here while I am ahead. I just hope that this Clinic never loses its funding because their existence is so important to so many and more and more military retirees are moving to the Philippines which will continue to increase their workload. So, to one and all at the VA Clinic, Manila, have a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
TAPS
Towards the end of October, too late for me to add to my November column, two well known and well liked men to many residents of Angeles City passed away quite suddenly. They were both legends and will never be forgotten. It is with great sadness that I must pass on that:
Leo Ronald (Ron) Smith left us on 31 Oct. He was a member of the US Navy Reserves, 72 years old and was buried at the La Pieta Cemetery, Angeles City. His two daughters, one granddaughter and son, R.J. Smith were in attendance for the wake and funeral.
Dave White, the long time owner of the popular Hang-Out passed away quite suddenly in New Zealand on 30 Oct.
Tributes to both men were conducted at the Hang-out as the many men who knew, loved and respected these two individuals gathered to remember them, relate stories and to say goodbye. Members of the Mad Dog Motorcycle Club were on hand to pay their respects and as words were spoken on behalf of both men quite a few big lads shed a tear or two. I cannot begin to find the words to describe what a great fine gentleman Ron Smith was and how many people he helped in this town. We asked that his family donate a pair of suspenders to the hang-out so they can be placed with his picture on the wall.
Davy White, - well, he was a bit of a character. He made me into an "All Blacks" fan despite my ignorance of Rugby. He used to be one hell of a good dart player until a stroke slowed him down many years ago. The man could grow a beard faster than anyone I have known. He had a son "Harold" that meant a great deal to him. Davy went back to New Zealand to regain his health that had been declining over the last few years and reports reaching us here is that he was getting stronger so it came as a shock that he died so suddenly.
I realize that life goes on and our time on this earth is fleeting and I am grateful for any time I have left to enjoy my family and friends in Angeles City but for me, with each passing of a friend my space seems a bit less than the day before. I will miss Dave White and Ron Smith!
The pictures below reflect the many people that came to bid Ron goodbye. He was laid to rest at the La Pieta Cemetery. Some of those in attendance for an emotional tribute at the Hang-out were his daughters Rhonda Nofoa, Roxanne Horner and son R.J. Smith who took emergency leave from his military service, his son Leo Smith could not make it here from the States.
One further note in reference to Ron Smith, a bit of an update here. It has been a bit over a month since his passing and a few days ago Hobo Bill came to visit me and wanted me to pass on a bit of information. Ron's wife, Fely, after one month from Ron's passing is coping with this abrupt change in her and is gaining the strength to carry on with the projects that Ron left behind. She has decided to continue with that part of his business dealing with house loans under the same terms that Ron did. This is good news for there are many people living in houses here made possible by the loans given to them by Ron. Fely is also appreciative of those people that came forward to pay off early those personal loans made to them by Ron in order to alleviate the paperwork and assist Fely financially. Fely would like to ask that others that have incurred obligations to Ron to please honor their obligations and continue to make the required monthly payments (Excellent records were kept so believe me, anyone who fails to honor their commitment will find their name posted in my column). For those of you that are wondering about the check cashing part of Ron's business be advised that it will continue under the auspices of Hobo Bill. Bill can be found at the Phoenix Hotel bar Mon thru Sat from 0930 to 1400 hrs. Bill and his wife are working very closely with Fely as they did with Ron himself, and they want to continue the services provided by Ron in the same kind, understanding manner practiced by the portly gentleman in suspenders.
Oh dear oh dear, now ain't this a sweet sampling of what you could find in your Christmas stocking if you hang it up in your hotel room in Angeles City. "Butt, Butt, duh, ah, what can I say except two bottoms up and one hand full of sweetness!
FOUR NEW CLUBS TO CHECK OUT
Eruptions - four new Clubs have opened up in the Entertainment zone. One, Mo's King of Diamonds is part of Kokomo's, three are on the other side of the Checkpoint, along Perimeter Road. We have Eruptions, just behind the Dr. Holmes Club, Tartz Club further West heading towards the Clarkton but not quite that far and then further up you have Neil Meeker's Stargate Club. Lets start with Eruptions. This is a large club that is well laid out and offers food as well as booze. It is open from noon to 0300 hrs and they offer a lively Golden Shower. Wait, not that shower you are thinking of but one in which yellow ping-pong balls drop from the ceiling above the dance floor when a customer pays a fee for the privilege. A shower lf balls falls on to the stage and the floor and all the ladies are scampering about to collect as many as they can gather. It is fun to watch and is a bit of a twist on this new gimmick that is being used by many clubs now. The ladies turn in the balls to the cashier and get credits of 5 pesos for each ball. There is a separate area for a pool table that allows sufficient space for comfortable, unhindered playing and from that room you can exit Eruptions and enter the Dr. Holmes Club without going outside. It is a nice arrangement and the present management staff are courteous, personable and professional, a formula for success.
Tartz - After Eruptions we head on up to the Tartz Club, the latest project of the one and only Harro the Magnificent or "the large one". I always enjoy seeing Harro putt around town on his little motor bike sitting on a seat that looks way too small. But, his ideas are never small and here he is again with a new Club sporting a unique name that immediately makes one think of sweet naughty women. I missed Harro when I visited but was taken care of by Greg and Mommie Melody. I enjoyed a bit of a hug from "big boobs" Regie and the rest of the ladies on stage and the waitresses. There wasn't much of a crowd there but I am sure business will pick up, after all, they had not been open all that long and a bit more time is required for this little gem of a bar to be discovered. They are open from 1600 hrs to 0100 hrs. Local drinks are only P50, compare that to Fields Ave guys but right now they only have 20 dancers but I am sure that will be increased as time passes.
Stargate - Where to next? No problem, keep on walking towards Friendship until you see the Stargate Club, actually, I think you might want to drive or get a ride from someone if you are close to my age. I would like to know where the hell Neil gets all his energy from as he is on the go from early morning to very late at night. He is another guy that has a thousand ideas running around in his head 24 hours a day and has to find an outlet for all his energies. His latest effort saw the construction of the "Stargate Club" completed in record time with a touch of great interior design, maximum utilization of space and effective lighting. Now, add a touch of some great looking ladies, inexpensive drinks and innovative ideas and you have another "must see" Club added to the Angeles City scene. One new idea that Neil came up with is "Super Sundays". On Sundays once your bill hits P1,000 the rest of your entire day will be "drink free" (personal drinks only). You can come and go from the bar as many times as you wish and your drinks will continue to be free all day and night. Your bill must reach P1,000 in one setting. How is that for a fun Sunday, of course, those of you that normally take a day off from drinking on Sundays will now have to switch to Saturdays or maybe Mondays, ok, Tuesdays, Wednesday is good but you have to play pool or something, Thursday is no good because it is getting close to the weekend and you don't have to drink on Sundays, Friday and Saturday is just too much going on at the bars to stay home but you know you can rest on Sundays. Oh shit, come Sunday morning you remember that "Stargate" has this good deal on the booze and ----- well, what the hell, who wants to stay home with the Mrs all day anyway.
King of Diamonds - Now, last but not least, we come to the King of Diamonds which is the latest brainchild of that "how can I make a buck today", Mo. This is a man that every few years states that he is retiring and will be selling all his Clubs in town and heading to the hills for a more sedate life. He lies! It will never happen, in fact every time he says this he ends up buying or "managing" even more. Here in the Duty Free Stores they coined the phase, "buy one, take one" well for Mo and his bars it is "sell one, buy two more". His excuse always is that he could not resist the great deal he was offered. How many times over the years have we seen various transformations of Kokomo's? Hell, I lost count at 20, but you have to admire the man for his innovation and flexibility and the fact that he always makes money. Witness now the rebirth of "The King of Diamonds Club" and only Mo could have the balls to create such a dramatic transformation within that building. Move a cooking area and replace it with a bar and suddenly you have a business that is packed with customers every night and a bunch of ladies on board that are up close and fun, fun, fun. You have Expat managers on board that are some of the finest in town and you still have Mo with his warped imagination dreaming up events that will excite as much as a poker hand draw to four aces and a king of diamonds. The "Stargate" has their super Sunday but the King of Diamonds features the "Diamond Bell Ring" for P7,500. This allows the bell ringer to enjoy the following benefits at Voodoo, Angels and the King of Diamonds: a. EWR from any of the three, b. All you can drink in all three (of what you were drinking when your rang the bell), c. two large pizzas from Kokomo's, d. Tshirt and bar towel, e. 10% discount on ladies drinks and EWR's in all three bars for the rest of the night and all night the next night, f. one free night at Kokomo's or TI in Subic or a free night at Kokomo's in AC. That seems to be a good deal to me and leaves a lot of room for one hell of a fun night. By the way, Mo's new idea to make money is to build four more bars in Kokomo's and lease them out. The guy never stops!
You could have fooled me and a lot of other folks.
One afternoon last month I received a call from my friend Chuck to get over to Honey Ko's and meet the new World 9-Ball Champion, Daryl Peach who was with some mates tossing down a few drinks. As it happens I was just passing by and go there in a few minutes. There was a rather big crown in the bar and "Daryl" had a large contingent of fans around him. Well, I snapped a few pictures, shook hands with him and extended congrats and all that stuff. I had watched the exciting final match on TV but in no way would I remember exactly what the champ looked like. I announced that I would publish the story and pictures in my Dec column. A few days before the end of Nov I received an Email from an unnamed source who told me that it was all a prank and that the subject at Honey Ko's was an English look alike.
It was supposed to be a joke on Damien, one of the owners of Honey-Ko's but he was not around at that time. This look alike did well as he was escorted around town to other bars and also, I heard, to Subic as well. The one thing I kept asking people was, "did he play any pool" and the answer was always "no". I thought this a bit strange but I must admit that I bought the story hook, line and sinker. After receipt of the "tip" I went into the internet and pulled up a few pictures of the real Daryl and as you can see, the Champ looks a bit younger than the lad at Honey-Ko's. I am sure a lot of folks had a good laugh on this one. I think it was a bit clever and the Englishman posing as Daryl does have a very close likeness to him. Well done lads but I am glad I never offered to buy him a drink.

I WOULD IF I COULD
Before the new owners closed down Magic Moments for renovations I was with my pool team for a match and I thought it would be a good time to look for my Dec special lady. They had a whole lot to choose from on the dance floor and I could not concentrate on my objective. I thought it would be a good idea to let the manager, Brian, choose one since I haven't done that in a long time. He did not hesitate at all as he named Beverly Anna and when she appeared there was no doubt in my mind that he had made a good choice. She is 22 years old, 5'4" from Subic, near Barrio Baretta. A high school graduate, she enjoys playing volleyball, badminton, and watching movies. She has 5 sisters and 2 brothers and she likes men around 40 years old but told me that 70 is OK too. Can you imagine any good looking 22 year old lady in the States saying that to an old fart like me, especially in my income bracket? I must ask Brian to make sure that Beverly is still working at Magic Moments when it reopens, we old folks like our fantasies.
REAL ESTATE HIGHLIGHTS
There are two new major subdivisions being built in Angeles City that reflect the building boom going on in this area. I know there are more but these are the two places that I have been able to visit and talk with the sales personnel. The first is Pulu Amsic Balinesean Estate, located in Amsic, AC, which is right behind the Angeles City Sports Resort. It is easy to reach as one passes through Hensonville. Their motto is "Balinese lifestyle at its finest - A gem in the city. It is situated on 23 hectares with 233 salable lots in phase one. The prices of the lots, depending on size range from P4,200 a sq.m to P5,450 and a 15% down payment is required with 5 yr, 7 yr and 10 year payment plans at 18%. A reservation fee is P50,000 (main road) or P20,000 (inner lot) good for 30 days. I was advised by sales ladies Sherwin and Jasmin that a 3% discount is offered to cash buyers. Like most real estate projects the price you see today will be higher as time goes by. Those that get in on the ground floor end up with a better deal than those that wait months or years later. What I liked about this site is the openness of it, the road design and easy access as well as proposed security measures. When talking to Jasmin I suggested that a back gate access/egress be added that would allow a short cut to the Friendship area thereby avoiding the traffic along Hensonville and Perimeter Road. For further information visit their website at www.scrc.com.ph, You can call the St. Catherine Realty Corp. at 63-045-887-4142 to 45/887-6772. Locally give Sherwin or Jasmin a call at 0922-824-5722.

THE ENCLAVE - This is a beautiful upscale housing development that is located in Barrangay Pampang, along the Fil-Am Friendship Highway, Angeles City. Their motto is "Serenity Meets An American Beauty" and when one walks within this subdivision you would think you were in a California suburb. It is absolutely beautiful with a spectacular Club House, swimming pool, and restaurant. Special features are: the whole subdivision is a Wi-Fi hotzone for internet and VOIP, security cameras are in every street,, CCTV surveillance system at the entrance gate and commerical area, cable TV, cable internet and cable VOIP (intercom with IDD & NDD). Each house has an attached closed garage with automatic door opener. Here is something that should catch your interest: Foreigners can own units at the Enclave under their own names or after the names of their respective investment companies without using Filipino spouse or nominee. This is allowed under the Condominium Act of the Philippines or Republic Act (RA) 4726. While many of us have the perception that condominiums are the high rise variety there are also single-detached homes or even townhouses in the Philippines with condominium titles and the Enclave is being developed in that same direction. There are at least 500 lots available at the Enclave - 200 lots will be developed at condominium units. Therefore, 40 percent of the units can be allotted to foreign nationals. There are three house styles available for foreigners ranging in price from P5,905,000.00 to P6,355,000.00 with 30% down and terms ranging from 4, 6, 8, 10, 15 and 20 years. Again, prices are subject to change without notice. I regret that I did not have time to get some pictures to include here but for further information you can contact Elsa "Borgie" Mirasol at 0920-909-7889/0918-594-8344 or Email: borgie.mirasol777@yahoo.com. (Note: I am NOT in the real estate business, I get no commissions for sales. I only want to provide the service of letting you know what the market is like here and maybe this information can be helpful to someone)
ALASKA CLUB REOPENS
For those of you who did not know, The Alaska Club was closed for three weeks by the City because of a bold show displaying a bit more than some local officials considered proper and there was a bit of a misunderstanding by Jerry regarding old policies versus new policies. Anyway, Jerry went through three weeks of anguish, frustration and nearly developed a severe case of ulcers but finally, with the assistance of ACTA he was able to reopen without going through a name change. It was great to visit the place on opening night and to see Jerry smiling again and it was heartening to see so many customers dropping in to give him their support. Many thanks go out to Dennis, manager of Insomnia Club who assisted Jerry and also accommodated all his dancers during the closure. This was an example of how many of the bar owners and managers in this town reach out to assist someone when they have problems. Of course, Dennis was happy to have so many extra ladies on board for a few weeks. Jerry displayed a bit of a sense of humor on reopening night as he kept telling the ladies, "no undressing, keep those bras on, is it time for church services?" Welcome back Alaska Club!
SEEN AROUND TOWN - Here are some folks that I encountered last month that thought they would enjoy having their pictures appear in this column, especially in Dec so they could wish one and all a Merry Christmas. Dean and Carla (left) were enjoying playing pool in Eruptions. Roger Shell and Rizza were enjoying themselves in Magic Moments and they sure looked like a couple in love. Then we have Uncle Dan and Lea who posed for this short and long shot at the Dr. Holme's Club. Dan would like to show off his special girl to all his relatives in Alabama and this relationship is the subject of a very short story. Remember, there are so many happy people in Angeles City and life is so much more interesting here then, say, Alabama.
VISITORS FROM TEMPE ARIZONA
A couple of months ago I was surprised to have a visit from Lawrence and Mike from Tempe, Arizona who knew my son through his work in the bank in Tempe. Lawrence used to spend a lot of time here in AC and is happily married to Bianca, one of the best looking ladies to be on a pool team here in town and she was a good player. Mike is VERY happily divorced and you better believe that he enjoyed his visit to Angeles City. I talked them into posing with two of my employees because who the hell wants to look at two guys by themselves. Lawrence, the next time you and Bianca return for a visit stop by so I can get a picture of the two of you together. Sure glad you stopped by and I am happy to say that my son will be here for my birthday in Feb. Merry Christmas guys.
TOURIST OF THE MONTH
James Harris, from Ft. Worth, TX has to be one of the quietest, low key tourists that I have featured here. He is married to a lovely lady from Cebu, Fe and he enjoys talking about her. While here he stayed with his friend, Bill Moke at the Oasis Compound and he usually visits the Philippines once a year, sometimes twice. He enjoys the Blueberry Hill, Champagne Club and eating at the Cottage Kitchen. He works at Lockheed Martin, the F35 program and wanted to let all his friends there know that Angeles City is the place to visit. He especially wants his friend, Frank, 64 year old single man who is about to retire to "get your ass over to the Philippines and see what you are missing". Now Frank, you have to listen to Jim because you don't want to retire and have to hang around with a bunch of old grandmother's when you could be over here conversing with a much younger lady who will treat you with tender loving care. Of course you will want to stay at the Hotel La Casa where we have a nice large comfortable room waiting for you for only P800 a day. Sorry James, I just had to put in a plug for my stable. James, I enjoyed our talks and am pleased that you read this column and please stop by on your next visit, eh, bring Frank with you.
ROADHOUSE 14TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY
This is an anniversary that Mark Smith and Girlie will never forget. The day before the event Mark Smith suffered a serious heart attack at home, 0230 hrs, and had to be rushed to the Divine Shepherd hospital where he received emergency medical treatment by Dr. Froi Canlas. It was touch and go for a while but by late morning his conditioned had improved enough to transfer him to the Philippine Heart Center in Manila where he underwent an angioplasty procedure. Thank goodness that it was only one vessel that was blocked and within three days he was back in AC attending a Rotary meeting. His close partner for those 14 years, Girlie, stayed by his side at the hospital in AC and in Manila to make sure that all his needs were met. Thanks to his friends here, especially Jung and Kim, the show went on and the party was a huge success. Regretfully, while Mark was at the Rotary meeting he received word that his father had suffered a heart attack. A few days later he was able to get a flight to the States but arrived to late to see his father as he passed away just an hour or two before the flight landed. Our hearts go out to Mark for his loss but we are all grateful that Mark himself had the strength to survive his ordeal. I am including a few pictures of the Anniversary event that included many toasts to Mark in hoping for his recovery.
POLLO RICO REOPENS
The Pollo Rico Restaurant at the Clark SM Mall has reopened after being closed for renovation. Rico and Anna were not happy with the patronage they were getting and after doing some market research decided that they had to change the menu to reach out to the Filipino base and also keep those items on the menu that appealed to foreigners. They did away with the ready to eat counter and went to menu items only and created a 50-50 selections of items that cater to Filipinos and foreigners both. This was a smart move because instead of closing shop permanently they reevaluated their situation and adjusted accordingly and I give them high points for business sense. On opening day they offered a buffet that featured a selection of their new and old menu items. They offer Indian, Malaysian, Singaporean, international selections and even a touch of Mexican as well. They are open from 1000 to 2100 hrs and have a very nice outside eating area as well. They offer catering by calling them at 499-0277 to 78 (PLDT). You can enjoy more of the fine cooking by Emerico by dining at the the Emerico's Restaurant located on Fields Ave inside the Royal Amsterdam Hotel.
DOUG AND GRANDE ISLAND
One night four Australians, one Filipina, and one English lady trudged up the stairs to my office to surprise me with a visit. They were Ray Munday, Francis Patrick Murphy, Glen Rippon, Doug and Fe Richardson and sweet Tracy (English) who was in the company of Glenn. As soon as they got in the door Glen greeted me with the words "Ay Mate, let me tell you about Grande Island". He then proceeded to tell me about their trip to Grande and how disappointed he and Tracy were with the place. It was a horror story that started off well enough with their booking the trip through the Wild Orchid Inn and the boat ride to the Island was OK. But the place itself was terrible with the rooms being nice but dated and in need of a bit of maintenance. The bar in the hotel did not have any spirits to offer and there was construction outside that made the place a mess and there was nothing to do. He had more complaints and told me he would Email me the list but I did not receive it before my deadline. After one day they decided to leave but they had paid three days in advance. The manager said that he could not return any money because the Wild Orchid travel was holding the money. They packed up and left anyway and when they went to the Wild Orchid to get a refund, they were told that it was the Hotel's fault and that they were responsible for the refund. Needless to say this was one very upset Aussie and Tracy was upset also but in a more gentle English way. Glen did say that he was pleased with the rooms at the Blue Rock and also Sunset Garden here in AC. Everyone loved the food at the Clarkton so that should make Chef Oliver happy. After the complaints we all headed down to the bar and enjoyed a few hours together. Now, I believe that Glen is from Balnarring, Melbourne, Doug and Fe live in Williamstown, Melbourne and the others I forgot to ask because I was busy listening to Glen. By the way, Tracy works with the animal welfare agency so decided not to go see any cockfights while here. Many years ago, while the base was here I visited Grande Island for one day and had a great time, swimming and snorkeling and having some nice food. I guess over the years it has changed dramatically and maybe it is not the place to put on your list to visit. I will certainly make a day trip there next year, after the toll road is finished, to see what it is like and report accordingly.
ONE LAST PICTURE
I wanted to put this picture in because when I met Rick Hill and his girlfriend I was impressed with this couple, especially Stephanie, a charming 26 year old young lady who has made a nice life for herself despite the hardship of being raised by a single parent gave birth to Stephanie after getting pregnant in 1979 by a U.S. military man stationed here by the name of Jesse Frances Sanders, from Louisville, Georgia. Stephanie tried to trace her father to be able to communicate with him but to date, no luck. I think that Jesse would be quite proud of his daughter and it would be nice if they could meet each other. Rick is from Taree, NSW, 3 hrs north of Sydney and he has a 22 hectare cattle farm there. He and Stephanie looked so happy together that I suspect it won't be too long before Stephanie is learning how to take care of a bunch of cows. She is a very good looking woman, intelligent and very conversant in English. I do believe Rick has lucked out here and I hope that someday Stephanie will be able to make contact with her father.

Whew, my ass is sore and my fingers are getting stiff as I rush, again, to finish this month's column before my good friend Ellie gets here to zip it all up for me. Guys and gals, I will make my excuses for next months column in advance as it will be very short. I will be playing Santa Claus at the SM Malls in Manila, AC, Nepo Mall in AC and various other appearances in order to gather funds and goods for our annual Christmas project. This will be the most appearances I have ever made thirteen in all and I hope my knees and back hold out. It will be fun and tiring but it will really cut down on my time to get material and pictures for Jan. I was waiting for the Manager from La Pasha, James, to send me his schedule of events for Dec but my deadline caught up with me before he had the chance to send me an Email. This November has seen a lot of rain from the storms passing through the country but December should be pretty well rain free and I know there will be a heck of a lot of special events going on. I just can't seem to get those owners and bars to send me their schedules, maybe I will have better luck next year. Come on over and visit us before the dollar loses more ground against the peso. There are a few retirees here considering moving back to the States and various other countries but not this Horse, I'm here for the duration. Hey, just yesterday we had a bit of a shaking as a minor earthquake was felt. I think I am one of the few that did not feel anything as I was outside walking to my Rotary meeting at the Stotsenberg Hotel and was not inside to see anything shaking. Remember folks, be kind to Horses and have a nice December.
