Normally, for December I would insert a picture of Santa Claus to illustrate the spirit of this month. Well, this time just imagine Santa and his reindeers with me and Brazil's Miss Earth Candidate in the back of the sleigh going off in one hell of a fantasy trip. Now that is a Christmas present I certainly could live with though Priscilla might have an objection or two. Thanks to Fontana General Manager Tony Biggs I received an invitation to attend the 2006 Miss Earth swimsuit competition at the beautiful Fontana Convention Center, Fontana Leisure Parks, Clark Field. Would you believe 99 beautiful women, with fantastic bodies in one place with smiles and willingness to have their pictures taken and all of them taller than me. The one that was the most fun for me was Miss Italy as I joked around with my one or two Italian words and she joked back. That was one fun lady. I have a few more pictures and will include them further down in the column.
A change of subject - this is the time of the year that Mrs. Horse and I prepare for our annual Christmas charity to visit two hospitals on Christmas Eve and present a food package, candy and money to each charity patient unlucky enough to find themselves in hospital at this time of the year. But not all unlucky as it turns out that Santa is the first one to give newly born infants their first Christmas toy. Additionally, for the last three years we have personally selected indigent families in the area near our farm and invited them to our farm for a Christmas treat to include games, prizes, lunch and a visit from Santa. Each child from 2 to 12 years old is given a new outfit that Mrs. Horse has gone to Tutuban wholesale Mall, Manila to buy. This year we have 107 children on our list for a 17 Dec "meet Santa day" at our farm. Also, during the week between Christmas and New Years we visit an Aeta village and distribute old clothes and any goodies we have left over from Christmas. The only reason that we have been able to reach more of the poor is due to people using me as Santa for their Christmas parties and paying me in kind with anything that I can use for the charity, i.e., candy, food items, toys, or even money. Thanks to people like John James, from England, George Brown, Karel Heinan and many others who contribute funds, we are able to reach more and more people each year. What I need from any readers that would like to help is contributions of toys, old clothes for men, women, women and children and candy. The old clothes areparticularly important as I cannot buy those and Priscilla and I just can't gather enough from our own closet.
As 2006 draws to an end and 2007 approaches I would like to thank all those folks out there that have stuck with my column for another year. I know that there are those of you out there that disagree with me at times, get mad, many agree, are amused and offer many different opinions. I appreciate the many of you that have sent me Emails and even took the time to visit my stable when in town. I am not a professional writer, as many of you can tell by all my grammatical errors. I just plain enjoy writing about Angeles City, to include the bad, good, mysterious and just plain crazy happenings. It is a wonderful City, never boring, constantly changing, just like the peso rate and living here full time can be one hell of a challenge at times but even those who complain a lot never leave. Angeles City gets into your blood, immune to any anti-biotic and if for some reason one does leave, you find yourself missing the place. If you are single, divorced or are a widow, this is the place to park your hat or at least try to visit a couple of times a year (or like Brian from Cannes, Aus who pops in six or seven times a year). If you are 50 plus in years and on your own, man this is the place to be, don't let that old grandmother you are seeing in the States, Australia, Germany, wherever, tell you anything different. Get your ass over here and stop by my stable for an incoming briefing. But, one bit of advice I always give, take care of business first, have a monthly income established so that you do not join the small group of lads that hang here without a pot to piss in. OK already, that is enough, advance Merry Christmas and a happy New Year and may you all stay healthy and happy in 2007.
TIDBITS

Finally, a few places in the US are getting enough guts to vote positively that English shall be their official language. Arizona voted 73% yes to making English the official language of this State. One town in Texas did the same but of course, Hispanics call anyone voting this way a racist. Isn't America great, a country that rewards individuals for breaking the law but thank goodness there is beginning to be a bit of a backlash and some communities have had enough. I guess some year in the future some law will be created, probably in Texas, to make speaking English an illegal act. Further evidence that there is some common sense seeping into the US is that Republican Assemblywoman Sharron Angle, a member of the Town Council in Nye County, Pahrump, Nevada is asking that English be the official language, restrict display of foreign flags and deny benefits to illegal immigrants. Maybe these folks have been reading my column? Too bad they can't get rid of Senator Harry Reid who voted against English as a National language and also voted to give illegal Aliens social security benefits. Damn, wish I could sneak my wife and adopted son across the border into the US, it would be a lot easier to get them benefits than it would be trying to go through the US Embassy here. As a note of interest, be advised that besides Cuba, we now have Ecuador, Venezuela, and Nicaragua led by left wing, anti-american zealots and still have to deal with illegals from those countries who no doubt, are not all that pro-America. We have problems in the Middle East to face but now are not fully aware of the problems we will be facing on our very own doorsteps.
Merry Christmas Bob Kolleck - enjoyed your Email.
A friend of mine just came back from Puerto Galera (18 Nov) and told me a story that could be the cover up of the year. Supposedly a 12 year old girl was working in one of the clubs, taken to a room by a Korean who killed her by slitting her throat. A team of investigators from Manila showed up and all of a sudden the body of the girl was found by the side of a road. The body had stayed in the room for three days and moving it to an isolated road was to protect the Korean in making it appear to be an accident. None of this was publicized at all, local or national papers. Could this be a cover-up because of the increased Korean investment in Puerto Galera? Has anyone else heard this story as the person I heard it from has left the country? The suspicion in Puerto Galera is that money can do wonders, even hide a murder.
City Director PSSupt Segubre will be retiring at the end of the year and he will be replaced PSSupt Cunanan. This may not interest many folks but be advised that this is a very visible, important position and how the PNP in this town perform their duties depends a great deal on who the City Director is. Col Segubre was very pro tourist, protective of foreigners and a strong desire to reduce crime in the entertainment area. He worked very to support and train the Tourist Auxiliary Police. Through his efforts the ACTA Tourist Police were transformed into the Tourist Auxiliary Police coming under the jurisdiction of the PNP and particularly station four. The TAP charter remained the same, to assist expats and tourists in the entertainment belt and assist in crime prevention.
As of 8 November the four ladies from the Angel Witch Club were still suffering in jail. I was informed that one of them collapsed on this day and is quite weak. One Judge Buan is the heartless person who must not care about expediting a case in which the innocence of those charged is so obvious. Thank goodness for Mo at Mo's place who, on behalf of the Angel Witch owner, is keeping these ladies on the payroll, sending them food, blankets, mattresses, etc. during this very long incarceration. I want to say so much more but I must wait until the last of the month to report on their final status because my column does not go to the webmaster until two or three days before the end of the month.
UPDATE: Thank goodness, today, 22 Nov, at 1200 hrs, I was able to meet ACTA Attorney, Marlon Lauder, and the Angeles City Sheriff at the City Jail where, finally, they had the release papers to allow the Angel Witch ladies to finally walk out of their incarceration for the first time in two months. I was so pleased to be there to take their picture and enjoy the smiles on their faces as well as give them a lift to their first destination, which, not surprisingly, was the Angel Witch Club. One of the first questions they had for me as they waited for the paperwork to be completed was "do we still have our jobs" and of course the answer was one big "YES". Dave Fisher stood by these ladies for the entire two months with full instructions from the new Club owner that they be taken care of. It is funny, after putting up with the very frustrating legal system we were supposed to be grateful that it only took two months instead of two or three years and that the "administration cost" of obtaining the release was so low. I must admit that the costs were low compared to what the arresting agents were originally asking for but it took two months for the judge to finally dismiss the case against the ladies for lack of merit. Would you believe that the Prosecutor did not want the case dismissed and fought it all the way. I will leave it to your imagination as to why he did not want the case dismissed. I do not know how many Filipinos celebrate Thanksgiving but I think that four Angel Witch ladies, this year, will certainly sit down for an American Thanksgiving Day lunch and enjoy their first full day of freedom.

Barry Truex, one of the owners of the El Mexicano Grill on Don Juico Ave, Clarkview, stopped by to see me. He was excited about their Tuesdays "Taco Day" where you have a chance to make and eat tacos the way you like them. You can whip up two tacos to include a free soft drink for P220 and three tacos for P300 to include a free beer. Another new addition to this restaurant is their Sunday buffet, served from 11 AM to 6 PM only that also serves American and Filipino food for a cost of P280 plus a free drink. Two new menu items are the Chicken Rojo for P220 (breasted chicken with a small dose of chili seasoning) and number two is the Tamale Pie for P160 (small casserole). Barry was really excited about these new menu items and special days as he is trying to introduce some new ideas that he picked up in the States and he also felt that there just weren't enough Mexican dishes on the present menu. I mentioned to Barry that Priscilla the Horse was looking forward to a Taco Salad being added as she was disappointed not to find it on the menu during her recent visit. Barry and Nigel, what a team and both of them are determined to bring quality food to their beautiful restaurant and I suspect that they might succeed. If I am wrong then what the hell, they leave to try something else and then some Korean or Japanese will come along to add to the Asian atmosphere at Friendship. By the way, I have not tried out any of the new items that I have written about so I can't comment on taste or quality at this time. Not sure I will get the time to do so until after the holidays so if a reader of this column does get to check out the new cuisine, please feel free to send me your comments, bad or good, and I will include it in my Jan issue.

Let me clarify something for the many friends of Barry Edwards. When I wrote that I hoped he was not staying in AC I was not commenting on his guilt of innocence of certain charges that were brought against him three years ago. What I was intending and no doubt did not make it clear enough is that once targeted, all too often one can be easily be targeted again by certain elements looking for financial gain. Barry knows where this horse has his stable so if he wants to come by and tell his tales of woe, he is more than welcome. I love a good story! The drinks are on Barry, of course.
I nearly crapped my pants when I read little tidbit on the internet. Here I am fascinated by the new hotels going up in AC with their 50 plus rooms and my mind is boggled to see that 8,000 rooms will be added to the Tropicana in Las Vegas, Nevada. It sure does dwarf the 8 rooms I have at the Blue Boar Inn! "The Tropicana hotel-casino will soon have a new owner. The Nevada Gaming Commission approved the $2.7 purchase of the Aztar Corporation, which owns the Tropicana. Columbia Entertainment is expected to complete its purchase of Aztar by the end of the year. The Tropicana's new owner plans to give the property a $2 billion makeover next year and add another 8,000 hotel rooms.
I was surprised to receive a text from New Zealand from the sister of the Barry Garrod, who was murdered in Angeles City two years ago. At the time this took place my instincts told me that his wife and a boyfriend could be involved. My goodness, this is certainly a recurring scenario in this town and it is a damn shame that all too often these ignorant, uneducated, ungrateful women all too often seem to get away with murder.
Dear Harry
I am sending this email from Christchurch New Zealand. My brother lived in Bali Bago Angeles City for 10 or so years. He was murdered on 31st May 2004 by a gunshot wound to the head. I have been looking on the internet finding out what i could about where he lived and the Philippines and i came across your newsletters. I have enjoyed reading them all and it has given me an insight into everything Barry told me about the justice system etc. I was reading your July 2004 newsletter and there was a piece in there about my brother Barry Garrod sent to you by Peter Wilkinson and for that I say thank you it was comforting to know he was well thought off and judging by the amount of letters of condolence we received from the Philippines he had many friends.
A case for murder was filed against 3 people - the ex partner, her boyfriend and his father by Cinsp Efren Y. Miranda however it was decided there was not enough evidence to make the case stick so all charges were dropped. Barry has 2 children their names are Justin and Shane Solidum but since the charges were dismissed their mother has chosen not to have contact with us. We have sent the boys presents, cards, letters but we never get any replies. These two boys are New Zealand citizens but no one here seems willing to help us find them and we are desperate to know that they are okay. So Harry i wondered if any of your readers may have any information that might help us to find our boys we would dearly love to hear from them. Last known address for them was 1824 Lacandola Street, Mabalacat, Pampanga. I know people don't like to get involved but even if someone said "hey I've seen them and they are okay" that would even help. Many thanks Harry and i will understand if you decide its not something you want in your newsletter but we thought we would give it a try. Take care and keep up the good work.
Sharon Hofacher
I responded to Sharon that I would try to seek further information on the children. In response she sent this reply to me.
Thank you so much, it means a lot to us. If it is any help to you the mothers name is Dylan Solidum and her boyfriends name is Jonathan Niguid. I have been told that the address I gave you may belong to Jonathans mother but not sure on that one. Once again many thanks. When I told my 84 year old mum she cried. Bless you. At times I am saddened by some things I write or report about. Such is the case with Email I received from Roger, the owner of the Rama Resort in Zambales. I considered Dave White a friend and he had many more in this town and Manila as well. Regretfully, towards the end of his days here he became a very difficult man to communicate with. On more than one occasion he told me about the property he was going to buy into at the beach and also how much he was going to sell the Hang-out for. I do know that prior to leaving for New Zealand he did not have a pot to piss in but, to me, it was just a sad story and I preferred to remember him during his better years. I can understand Roger's disappointment and frustration because none of us who knew Dave enjoy learning about some of the things he did to people who trusted him and tried to help. We all hope that things will work out well for him in New Zealand. Regardless of how he left us, for sure Davey White will never be forgotten and each time I pass the Hang-out I find myself looking for that bearded Maori with the arthritic legs sitting on his stool with his early morning beer heaping verbal abuse on those who stop to say hello.
"Giddaye Harry the Horse,
Most likely you will remember us from the time you were here with the Angeles Bahay Bata Kids, though that was some years ago. Hope all is well for you, Priscilla and your business.
Just a note about Dave (Hang out plus) White, or "the Black fella" as I always affectionally called Him in person. It seems that Dave told a number of People that He was half owner, or Partner of Rama, just to set the record straight, He never has had any association with this Business other than as a customer and friend. Dave lobbed on our doorstep September 13 (oh yes "luck 13") complete with several cardboard boxes, containing all His worldly possessions and a cock and bull story about Ken and John arriving on the Saturday to buy the property next door that we have for sale and that Dave would manage the 3 rental houses there . After they did not arrive and a phone call confirmed it a scam, by which time I was aware that Dave had no money and no way of paying His Bill, with the help of two of His Norwegian friends that live near by and promised that they would pick up 30% each of His bill with me wearing the other 40% He was allowed to remain till Sunday, where as I arranged to put Him on the Bus and pay His fare to Barrio Barretto. Alas instead He borrowed my phone and called Midnite Rambler and requested a car to pick Him up. Apparently on arrival He told the Driver that I was paying the transportation and He had given me the money for it. Needless to say this created a lot of unnecessary phone calls and drama. So please those that have been arriving at my door trying to collect Daves debts, thinking that He has some form of ownership deal, don't waste your time or mine. Dave White is in NO WAY CONNECTED TO Rama International Beach Resort in Botolan Zambales, I only have 1 partner who is my best Mate and also my Wife. So no debts can be collected here.
A word for Dave if He reads this column, Marichu and I wish you the best of luck and I hope you can straighten yourself out in N.Z. if you ever find yourself on "the bones of your arse" again, be a Man and say so, don't try to "scam" old friends, with the truth you would have been welcome for as long as you needed, one last thing, do the right thing and start the wheels in motion to get the paper work started so that Amy and Harold can join you there. Your friends Roger and Marichu Bound.

I could not resist including this joke, after 25 years here I could understand the common sense used here:
Three contractors are bidding to fix the White House fence. One from the Philippines, another from Mexico and an American. They go with a White House official to examine the fence. The American contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a
pencil. "Well," he says. "I figure the job will run about $900: $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me." The Mexican contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, "I can do $700: $300 for materials, $300 for my crew and $100 profit for me." The Filipino contractor doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers: "$2,700." The official, incredulous, says, " What? You didn't even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?" "Easy," the Pinoy explains, "$1,000 for you, $1,000 for me and we hire the guy from Mexico".
Are you looking for something different to do one evening while in Angeles City? I have learned that Mo's (formerly Kokomo's) is having it’s 3rd wine and cheese evening on December 8th. The last two were literally SRO. For those of you who don’t know, Mo was the wine master and president of the Cheese Club of the Philippines for the past 13 years. The Cheese Club is one of Manila’s most popular organizations. There are 250 members of which 65% are Filipino and 35% foreigners. It meets from 6:30 to 8:30 the 1st Wednesday of each month at the Manila Polo Club. There is a 2+ year waiting for membership. At each session they go through 30kg cheese and 15 cases of wine. If you are in Manila and would like to attend, contact Mo to see if there’s any space. For the 8 Dec experience at Mo's (7 - 10 PM) it will cost you P650 with the venue being the Kokonut's Sports Bar. Attendance is limited to 22 ticks which are available at Mo's or Nutz. There will be 10 different cheeses plus finger food and drink either wine or local drinks. Now, if I can only remember to get my ass down there to take a picture for my column. I'm anxious to see these cheese and wine experts at work, both items of which I have absolutely no knowledge of. I only know the sliced American Kraft cheese for my cheese sandwiches.
OXFORD HOTEL DINNER SHOW
The management of the Oxford Hotel gave me 10 tickets to sell for their first "kick off" event of their newly opened Hotel. Imagine, only 500 pesos for a meal and a show and it was so reasonable that I bought five tickets for the family. I figured Priscilla the Horse needed a night out and the price was right. Actually, I have been complaining, for years, that there is not enough entertainment available at the base and that this should be a priority item for the New Year. Most of us cannot go to Manila to see various shows so I compliment the Oxford folks for their initiative.
Now, how about the evening? The food was absolutely great. Not only was there a buffet featuring make your own salad, but in addition to the buffet displaying two delicious types of meat but there was Mongolian Bar-b-que as well and that is something that both Mrs Horse and I are crazy about. Then, I saw that they were making those darn Crepe Suzettes that I cannot turn away from. Needless to say, I ate more than P500 worth of food and after the desert I had trouble getting up to walk into the pool area to watch the show. Food, on a scale of 1 to 10, a very strong 10 and I was told that the Mongolian will be offered every day at lunch and dinner. The price has not been set yet. but I am writing this on 4 Nov so am sure I can report the price by press time.
The show? Now that was a bit of a disappointment, mainly because of the sound system. It was terrible and the two female singers for the band kept switching microphones. It did not matter because the band played so loud that the vocalists could not be heard. We had an inkling of what to expect from the warm up session before introducing the "Baywatch bodies", 8 ladies that did have very nice bodies, could dance, and sing and chat it up with the audience. Now, the switching of the microphones became a real problem and a bit distracting. But the "bodies" made the most of it and kept their smiles and patience as the members of the audience also stayed with them and appreciated their perseverance. One local businessman and friend of the Horse, Jesse Yap, was with a group celebrating his birthday and of course the ladies had to get him on stage. A couple of US Marines in the audience were invited up on stage as well and it was obvious from their reactions that those guys really needed more liberty on Fields Ave. The show rated a 5 on my scale but for the overall evening, to include the food, hell a strong 10 and a big thank you to the Oxford folks for providing a very nice introduction to your fine Hotel. Priscilla and I will be back for some more Mongolian and keep those crepes on the menu!
TOURIST OF THE MONTH
It was a very quick visit, only a few hours but I was please to meet Ian Steward, from Sydney, Australia who went out of his way to track me down at my humble stable. Ian was on holiday with his wife Ruth, a lovely lady from Cebu where many beautiful come from and they try to visit the Philippines every two years. Actually, I did not get to meet Ruth but Ian guaranteed that she is a wonderful lady and would not mind me taking a picture of him with my waitress, Monique. Ian, while in Angeles City stayed at the America Hotel and was very pleased with the rooms, service and hospitality there. Of course he indicated that the Blue Boar Inn was his favorite bar. Could this be because he only had time to visit one bar while here and was being kind to me? By the way, the renovation of the Blue Boar Inn has been completed except for a few minor touches and will be ready to go for the 6 Jan Knights of the Brown Ring (AH club) meeting. I thought that would be a good way to start the New Year and Ian, sorry you can't make it but maybe some of your mates in Sydney will be here. Anyway, advance Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you again in two years, maybe?
EXTREME AIRPORT SECURITY
We all knew that this was coming. With all the new security rules at the airports and all the restrictions on what you could take on board SEAIR is raising their new security procedures to a new height. On their Clark to Cebu flights the policy is now, no luggage, no liquids NO CLOTHES. Now you don't have to worry about taking off your shoes, forget that damn wand they check you out with, forget the silly questions, just jump on board with absolutely nothing to hide. When you arrive in Cebu just jump off the plane, remove the credit card you had stored in one of your crevices, get some cash, head for the beach and swim to your hearts content. Just buy a cheap bathing suit that you can leave behind on your return trip, then ladies, call me for airport pick-up and I will deliver you to your destination. Guys, there are still a few lads on A. Santos Street that can pick you up. OK, already, a bit silly, I know but the way things are going, who knows how far-fetched this might be. To be quite honest this looked more like a North West Flight to me.
HOTEL NEW ARIONG
When I visited this Korean owned Hotel I was pleasantly surprised. First, I was surprised to be greeted by Josphine Marfa who at one time worked for John Martin and then also for Greg McDougal at Hidden Vale Sports Resort. Secondly, I was very surprised to see what a beautiful facility this was. From the time I entered the gate I was impressed by the quality of everything I saw. The owner is a Mr. Kim Duksoo whose wife is a former Miss Korea who now devotes her time to playing golf. I never got to see this couple but I sure will stop by once in a while just to see if I can catch a glimpse of a former Miss Korea. Wait, I get distracted so easily, the Hotel, yes, nice, classy, but it is way up there in Korean town on Friendship Highway along the street that takes you towards the back of the Halla Hotel.
THE CHARM OF SIMPLE ASIA
Here I am using the word "charming" to describe a restaurant, someone should slap sense into me for that, but doggone it, what else can I say. Lets see, "bloody nice", no. How bout "damn good place to go for a feed" - nope, no good either. "Classy place at a reasonable price" - a bit better but not quite there. Oh bugger it, to tell the truth "charming" describes it and I will live with that. The menu offers set meals from A thru G priced from P260 to P410 and there is enough variety to satisfy the taste buds of the most discriminate diner. Priscilla the Horse tried the Hainan Chicken (Spicy) at P260 and I went for the Citrus Chicken with Asian salad at the same price. Both selections were excellent but when ordering, make sure that the waiter knows you are not on a diet otherwise they might mistakenly serve you the diet portions which will not fill you up. We caught it just in time but no doubt, I looked like a customer that should be on a diet. You do not have to select the set menu items as they offer individual dinner items as well. Shucks, I nearly forgot to tell you where it is located. Just head South on Friendship Highway, driving towards the Friendship bridge and it is located midway down on the right hand side of the street. Yes, I know, it is the left side if you are heading in the opposite direction. Anyway, they also offer a buffet on Fridays and they have a beautiful garden setting in the back for those special occasions like weddings, graduations, birthdays, etc. So, however you might want to describe this restaurant does not matter to me, just treat yourself to a visit and decide for yourself.
I WOULD IF I COULD
This lady comes very highly recommended by a lad named "Gunner" Wagner. Gunner told me that she was "BBA Qualified" so I guess that means she is someone you certainly would like to meet and have for an escort for a couple of days. Lets see, what is the name of the place she works? Before I forget, she is 19 years old, has been on the job for only five months, and guess what? It was her first job but believe me, I don't know if she was shy five months ago but she sure ain't now. She is very available and is willing a man of her choice from age 34 and up, and when I asked her if she would go for a guy my age (68), her answer was "sure, why not!". It took an hour before the smile left my face. She hails from Tarlac so that means you don't have to travel 24 hours to some off the wall far a way province to visit her family. She graduated high school and has 4 brothers and one sister. Now, if I could only remember where she works. The good news is that she has an Email address: sherly_dumlau@yahoo.com. I really enjoyed taking her picture because she enjoyed posing not like some of the good looking ladies I run into that do not want their picture on the internet. So often I am told that they don't want that special guy, or guys that are sending money to know that they are still working in a bar. OK already, I guess I should tell you where she works - how bout the "Top Hat" on Perimeter Road. It used to be known as "Limited Edition" and you can read a few more words about it right after you finish looking at Reggie - oops, didn't I mention her name before? Anyway, it is Reggie and I do not know why there is a different name for her Email address, maybe she is using a friends address.
LOCALLY SPEAKING
 |
 |
There are some Clubs in town that are very popular with the local lads that live here year round and are not located on Fields Ave and all too often go undiscovered by the Toujists or have been noticed by the lads that come here a few times a year and are in the know. One such Club is the TOP HAT where I discovered my special lady for this month, Reggie. The owner of this place, Bill, has been trying to find the formula for success ever since he opened the Club as the "Limited Edition". Not too many months ago he completed an extensive renovation that succeeded in turning a rather mediocre bar into a very popular place to go. Like many women have found, a face lift can work wonders and bring a lot of welcome attention. I was pleasantly surprised on my visit to see a lot of familiar faces amongst the many customers in attendance and the ladies dancing on the two stages were energetically having a good time. I was impressed with the seating arrangements and also, the friendliness and professionalism of Lolita, the Mamasan. The music was not overly loud so a conversation could be held without yelling. The line-up of ladies was not too bad with a few stand outs mixed in with some that that probably had some special talents to make up for their lack of beauty. What the hell, that is the norm for many of the Clubs in town, especially the smaller ones but the key to success is not always how many lookers you have, but the attitudes of the ladies, Mamasans and managers and in this department the Top Hat does well. My feeling is if you take the time to visit the Top Hat you will not be sorry. Give my regards to Mommie Lolita and enjoy one of the biggest smiles in town.
NO CLASS
 |
 |
Why a title like "No Class"? You see, this Horse is a New Yorker, from Astoria Long Island and in my growing up days the street was my playground, the vacant lot was the softball field, the school yard wall was for slap ball. My old man drank beer, not cocktails, and we did not have a car or a place to learn how to play golf. Golf clubs, what the hell were those? We knew how to make a bat out of a broomstick and pool our money for those pink Spalding balls. We had sling shots, marbles, and ran all the streets, alleys and rooftops in cheap sneakers. The wine we drank came from cheap jugs after we grew out of A&W Root beer, so we had street class, not society class. I mention this because last month I was invited to an Art Show at the Mega Mall in Manila. One of those original solo exhibits that open with a ribbon cutting and cocktails and attended by high society folks. For sure, not a place for an old New Yorker with not enough money to purchase any painting ranging from a low of P53,000 to P150,000 and knowing that many of those in attendance were expected to buy these o riginal paintings from artist Jr Diaz, the son of Secretary Rene Diaz. Would you believe that the one I liked, titled "End of Summer" cost only P70,000 and of course I was so disappointed to find out that a Congressman in attendance had purchased it! I looked in vain for something in the range of 5 to 10 thousand pesos, ok, I lie, how about 2 to 5 thousand? So why did I even attend? One, I had never in my life been invited to such an event and my only experience with an art showing with the artist present was from seeing those events on TV and in the movies. So I bundled up Priscilla and off we went to Manila. We made a day of it because it had been many years since we last visited the Mega Mall and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves while we waited for the 6 PM opening of the exhibit. Now, I must encourage all visitors to Angeles City to try and find time to visit the Mega Mall in Ortigas, Manila because they have a more diversified selection of stores and places to eat. It is so much different from the SM Clark, SM San Fernando and SM North Edsa. To really enjoy it try to plan an overnight stay in a nice Hotel, hell, make a weekend of it. I doubt that I will ever be invited to an art exhibit again, shucks, the artist must have noticed my low income look as he never even spoke to me but I did enjoy talking to his Mom who is one hell of a nice lady. Honestly, I did try hard to pretend I had "Class", Priscilla pulled it off but I think I failed miserably as I drank a glass of wine and really wanted a SM Light. It was a once in a life time experience and it was kind of exciting to be around people that could spend P150,000 for a painting without blinking an eye. I think it is time for me to get my old Playboy Centerfold pictures framed now that I have been introduced to art!
CHANGING FACE OF A.SANTOS ST.
My goodness, lookie here, Heaven the bar getting an exterior paint job (The other job is still available inside) and some innovations in the interior as well. After so many years of maintaining a rather shabby appearance it seems that they have caught the "Orchid bug" in that they are looking to clean up their act, appearance wise, to keep up with the changing face of this street. Ken Edwards has changed the name of the Honky Tonk bar to Gobble's Bar. I have no idea why "Gobble's" other than to think that they have a few ladies inside ready to "gobble" you up. (Just before sending this to the webmaster I was told that the name "Gobbles" was changed back to "Honky Tonk" so who knows what it will be called by the time this column is on the net). The new look of the bar is fantastic and I wonder if the Orchid gang put their magic touch to it? Anyway, Kevin Wakley and Shanno seemed very pleased at the new look. Would you believe that the entire ground floor area of the condo units across the street will house an Irish Pub and the plans must be out of sight as that is one hell of a lot of floor space to play with. I do believe that the opening of this drinking establishment will be well attended. Over the years Ihave been amazed at the growth of the Orchid Inn group and the amount of investment they are pouring into Angeles City. They are all astute businessmen and are even looking to expanding into Olongapo. There are a few more people discovering the advantages of Olongapo, particularly around Barrio Barreto, i.e., Mo who already has taken over one hotel in that area and is planning more investments. One of the lures of investing in Olongapo, besides the beach atmosphere is that it is "Gordon Country" and seems to be a bit more investor friendly and much more organized than elsewhere. Even the jeepneys and tricycles are required to follow rules and regulations and crime is pretty much under control. For sure once the Subic - Clark toll road is open late next year one will see a lot of folks traveling back and forth to both locations. Meanwhile, the dressing up of A. Santos street is a welcome sight as long as a few of those bars, like Heaven Bar, stick around so certain cultural experiences do not disappear completely. (To take you to a blast from the past let me insert a couple of pictures showing the old A. Santos Street look)
FIRE AND ICE - NAME CHANGE ONLY

The Limited Edition has gone through quite a few changes over the past year. The upstairs portion has been changed around a couple of times and then was closed for "renovation" but last month had its "grand" reopening with hardly any breathtaking changes other than a new floor. The owner, Bill, was still absent and rumors have it that it might be a while before he returns. His wife, Maria, was very much in charge and was willing to announce to a few people that "no problem, I've got everything to include the bar and house" so it appears that Bill does not have to worry since Maria has the bull by the horns and can carry on quite well in his temporary absence. The opening was well attended but one attendee told me that he felt there appeared to be an atmosphere of tension in the room. Anyway, the dancers were your normal mixture of average ladies and some "cultural dancers" put a bit of extra effort into developing an entertaining presentation. Ah, a new floor was put in but the overall impression is that the closure was indeed mainly to kind of change things around staff wise.
DNA TESTING
Someone wrote me asking if there was a place in Angeles City that could give DNA tests. I called Ona Hospital's director Doctor Canlas and was informed that the only establishment performing this procedure is St. Lukes Hospital in Manila. St. Lukes was contacted and the following information was sent to the person who wrote me:
From: Dr. Raymundo W. Lo
Subject: Re: DNA test
Good day. Yes we are conducting DNA testing for parentage at our laboratory(Institute of Pathology-Cellular Immunology & immunogenetics Section) but on an appointment basis. We do it by using STR (short tandem repeats) DNA method. If I may ask, what's the purpose of you wanting to have DNA test? Is it for immigration or as a legal requirement (court case) or just peace of mind of the alleged father? I 'm asking because of the requirements that you have to submit to us prior to testing. If your purpose is for immigration abroad ( US, Canada & Australia) you need to call our extension clinic at Ermita , Manila at Tel.# 5210020 or 5218647 and for legal or peace of mind purposes, you need to call us first here at St. Luke's 723-01-01 loc. 4106 for an appointment. You can look for me, Jason,Jec, Tonette or Edwin. With regards to the price, it is P19,656.00 per person so if you want to test for the alleged father, mother and the child it's P58,968.00 plus P1,000.00 consultation fee. ( Please note that the hospital will increase 5% to 10% of the price by January 1 2007, if you decide to schedule the appointment on January 13, 2007) The results will be release after 2-3 weeks . Please note that we treat our results as highly confidential. Please note also that the ideal testing should be alleged father, Mother and the child. Physical presence, proof of identification and signing of consent form are also mandatory. It will depend on the pathologist in-charge during your consultation if he agrees to allow your case to conduct the testing for Alleged father and child only. If the pathologist in charge agrees to do Alleged father and child testing, and the mother is not available during the testing, please bring a NOTARIZED AFFIDAVIT OF CONSENT from the mother.
I provided this information because it is pretty common in this area for a visitor or resident to kind of accidentally contribute to the general population. Many of the ladies that develop this bit of a bulge in their stomachs work in a profession that could bring doubt as to who the sperm contributor actually is. But, when they inform the hapless guilty male, believe me, they are positive of the date, time, and location of the momentous moment when that speeding sperm entered into that egg making process. For some reason, not all males are convinced that they are the biological fathers to be, possibly because of the nature of the business their amorous lass was or remains engaged in. So, for those who are not sure, and have the money and time, this information is provided for your benefit. If you don't have the time or the money, well, hee, hee, Happy Father's Day!
LORNA PARAS TIES THE KNOT
It was a very happy evening for long time popular Orchid Inn employee Lorna Paras on Nov 24th as she married Jomel Solis. The garden wedding ceremony took place at the Batis Asul Resort. Lorna has worked the reservation desk at the Orchid for years and she is one of those employees that any hotel would kill to hire. She graces the desk with class and a dignity worthy of any five star hotel and the attendance of the Wakley brothers, Ron and Kevin as principal sponsors indicated how proud they are of Lorna. Right along side of Ron and Kevin was their right hand man, John (Shanno) Shanahan and I must say they all looked like family in their matching outfits. A few other folks I recognized were Tony Tissington, Louie Tan, Brgy Capt. Thelmo Lalic and of course Priscilla the Horse. Now, I was kind of carry along baggage to this wedding because it was my Mrs. that was invited as a principal sponsor and she was not going to let me stay at home. She ordered a special gown for the event and I must say she looked pretty good in it. I really did not know who was being married and did not pay attention until halfway through the event when I finally focused my bad eyes on the bride and thought she looked familiar. Then a bolt of lightning hit my mini-brain and I recognized that it was Lorna, the charming, beautiful lady that pays me for the Orchid Inn ad each month. Now the event had a bit more

meaning to me and I put down the book I was reading and decided to take a couple more pictures. Yes, I read a book or sleep during local weddings because after attending so many of them over 25 years I find the long drawn out ceremony a bit tedious so I usually find a spot in the back of the church where I can read and kind of doze off a bit as well. Naturally I try to avoid being a principal sponsor of these events because I have to sit and be attentive but even then I can't help but fall asleep. Anyway, the Batis Asul Resort is a wonderful place to have a wedding if you are so inclined and they have the whole routine down pat, so well organized but after three times there I can nearly run the program myself. Lorna looked beautiful and I am pleased to let you know that she will return to work on 10 Dec and hopefully stay with the Orchid Group for many more years, taking off only, maybe, for two or three maternity leaves.
HAPPY 13TH ANNIVERSARY
The Angeles City Roadhouse Club has become a teenager! Yep, 13 years under the leadership of Mark Smith and his able right hand, Girlie and still going strong. I was able to stop by after the Miss Earth Swimsuit contest at Fontana and snap the annual picture of this dynamic duo. As usual there was plenty of food, booze, raffle prizes, bell rings and just plain fun as many of the regulars were on hand to share the night. This Horse, for the first time, won a small raffle prize and the surprised the hell out of me. You see, a raffle ticket was presented for every drink you bought and I think 50 were given for every bell ring. I only bought three drinks, one for me, Doc Canlas and Mark himself. Needless to say my chances of getting anything was very slim. When Mark started the raffle there was a guy sitting near me, surrounded by around five or six dancers that looked like he was going to win the whole lot. I have no idea how many drinks he bought but it had to be a hell of a lot as by the time I left his corner looked like a department store. It was fun to watch the girls screaming with delight every time their number was called. I was in shock when I won one prize and regardless of how small it was, just winning was a treat. The highlight of the evening though was when Beth, from Champagne Group rang the bell and as many of you know, the dancers have to come off stage and give the bell ringer a kiss. I teased Beth that she would have to receive the kisses and I could get a picture of that. But, when the ladies approached Beth, Rolf, her partner directed them to me to receive the kisses. Now that was something I always looked forward to but this old Horse could never afford to ring that bell, so Rolf, thanks for the memory. Mark, Girlie, many thanks to you for another Road House year and I hope I am still around for the next one.
ENTERTAINMENT AREA OPEN TO TRAFFIC
The "no traffic" rule on Fields Ave and the rest of the entertainment zone was abolished with the removal of the anti-terror barricades and the Regional Mobile Group (RMG) teams manning them last month. This was welcome news as I can assure you, despite the necessity of the action to install the barricades, it was not well received by the community and the lack of specific orders or explanation led to mounting unrest by the City Council and the local population. During the period of closure there have been many self-appointed experts that put out many theories and opinions of why the streets were barricaded and they were not interested in the official statements coming from the Mayor. Even though many of them were way off base the fact remains that many questions were unanswered but, for sure, at the time of the no-notice implementation there was a perceived threat to the entertainment area and it was decided to act with increased security rather than do nothing. The problem was that the barricades stayed up so long with no timetable to lift them. A special committee of ACTA members met, at the Mayor's direction to make recommendations of how to lessen the impact and make adjustments. The committee which included representatives from the Balibago Barangay Council, and the Tricycle associations did not want to adjust, they wanted the barricades lifted. The committee recommended the implementation of the one way system that had already been approved just prior to the closure be implemented. The Mayor took this recommendation into account and after clearing it with officials in Manila approved the lifting of the barricades and the implementation of the one way system. Even though the one-way system was allowed the Mayor was told to continue with vigilant security procedures with the TAP and the PNP working together to facilitate this security. The bottom line is that the Mayor wants all tourists and residents to feel secure when visiting the entertainment area. Folks, you would be surprised to find out how much of that burden falls on the shoulders of the Tourist Auxiliary Police. Regretfully, some of the voluntary financial support that was being contributed each month by some of the Clubs/Hotels on Fields Ave has been stopped or dramatically reduced. Some folks felt it necessary to blame the Tourist Police for the street closures or did not like it when they had to enforce rules imposed by the Mayor. A few Expats enjoyed throwing their weight around and verbally abused the Tourist Police or tried to use their positions as managers/owners to talk their way through barriers. Believe me, neither the ACTA or the Tourist Police enjoyed the closure situation, nor, really, did the Mayor but we had to follow instructions. Even now, with the one-way system implemented to try and ease traffic congestion on Fields Ave and allow better security, there are many individuals that fight the system and refuse to cooperate. Once again, it is left to the Tourist Police for enforcement, despite the promise of the City Director to lend assistance and help enforce the rules. Enforcement is necessary for the one-way system to succeed but the cooperation of the City Mayor, the Balibago Barangay Council, the PNP and the City Director is needed. The ACTA is an organization made up of more than one or two individuals and the overall positive actions it has achieved should be considered and what it continues to do every month to help make the entertainment area successful. Personal differences with some individuals should be moved aside and concentrate on the overall objectives that bring us together. Remember, elections will be forthcoming in April and new folks could be elected to the Trustee Board, but only attendance at the monthly meetings can accomplish any changes. OK, I digress a bit here so lets get back to the main subject.
The one way system appears to be working and the traffic congestion on Fields Ave has been reduced dramatically. But, the Angeles City Syndrome pops up in that enforcement of traffic rules is hard to accomplish. There is still some fine tuning to be worked on, especially in the no-parking areas and the removal of the vendor carts. The new City Director has agreed to cooperate and provide assistance in the assignment of a traffic enforcer to the Tourist Police office but this has not materialized yet. The Tricycle Associations have agreed to cooperate but you better believe that this takes continuous dialogue to accomplish. Needless to say, the one way system is a continuing work in progress and more enforcement is needed and the Tourist Police in cooperation with members of the Angeles City Tourist Association (ACTA) are monitoring this closely. It ain't easy baby, believe me, it damn sure ain't easy!
MISS EARTH CONTESTANTS
As promised I am saving the best for last, a few more pictures of the Miss Earth 2006 contestants. There were 99 of them and I am still looking for Miss Thailand. Why? Because I spent five years there and loved every minute of it but them that was way back in 1966 to 1972 when I spent time in Ubon, NKP and three great years in Bangkok. Believe me, it was one hell of a great place to be back then and it was in Bangkok that "Harry the Horse" was born when I was the editor of the "BANCOOM" magazine and developed the gossip column. I was also the MC for the floor shows at the Windsor Hotel. I have many fond memories of Thailand and most of them centered around the women there and of course, the great food. So, I did want to try out a few of the Thai words I remember if I would have found Miss Earth Thailand. Regretfully, it was not to be but hope you enjoy the few pictures I managed to take.
What more can I say? Leaving you with these beautiful faces is more than enough. I must say that Miss Italy looked a bit wild and could possibly bite the hell out of this Horse if she wanted to. There were so many beauties with great bodies but I kind of like Miss Chile. Would you believe that not one of them asked me for my address or telephone number? Well, I'm glad they didn't as I would have had to tell them I only have eyes for Priscilla the Horse. I guess they just did not realize that they should always be kind to Horses. Merry Christmas you all.
PS - It was the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even Lowell Johnson.
