JULY 2002
The month of July finds the town a bit quiet as the tourist trade has slackened off quite a bit but not unusual for this time of the year. A few clubs are having to pinch pennies to meet expenses and this is survival of the fittest time. It's a good time to visit as the ladies are anxious to please and the clubs are creating different ways to attract your business so everyone is a VIP and believe it or not, construction of new establishments continues unabated. Never a dull moment in Angeles City!
AYERS ROCK OPENING
The grand opening of Ayers Rock was a great way to start off the month and many others agreed with me as the place was packed. I'm not sure which event attracted all the excitement - was it the wet butt contest or the long awaited opening of the char grill restaurant? I suspect it may have been the combination of the two, but for sure, the wet butt contest had to take bragging rights. Since I saw Rick from Rick's Café with his ever present video camera and the rotund John G. from Beeline (Go2Phil contributor) taking pictures/video of the action on stage featuring wet thongs and bare breasts I refrained from taking the R rated photos and just checked out the atmosphere. Would I call this a successful opening - you bet your sweet ass I would! Do I predict success for this club - yes, especially with its location close to the ever-popular clubs Blue Nile and Nero's.
I saw many familiar faces and was so happy to be standing next to an Australian lad that indicated he was a reader of this column that I bought him and his lady a drink. I did not get to sample the food that night but intend to do so when it is less crowded. The meat is provided by Bretto's on Don Juico Ave (Perimeter Rd.) and is first class. The price of a meal depends on the weight of the meat you order and you can pig out on a steak as large as 500 grams. After taking a couple of pictures I decided to go home a bit early as I was tired from attending the AH Club meeting at the Blue Boar that day. My trip home was delayed when I decided to stop in at the Blue Nile to say hello to manager George and again, saw some familiar faces. This time, between George buying a few rounds and a few other mates doing the same I ended up having to call on Priscilla the Horse to come and get me as I was a bit wary of trying to drive home. Folks, the Blue Nile is one hell of a fun place to visit and Wee George is a very popular manager, one of the best in town. I was still hungry since I missed the food at Ayer's Rock so had Priscilla get me over to the newly renovated Chic N Ribs for a quick feed. It was a long fun day and evening and you better believe that I slept in a bit late that Sunday morning. What a great way to start off the month and for visitors here, every day is a fun day in Angeles City.
(Late news - Well, the restaurant did not last long. The bar is doing well but folks did not feel like eating. First, Bretto decided he did not want to provide the meat for his own professional reasons and then came the closure. Darn, I never did get there to eat, maybe later in time, they will offer short orders or just get out of the food business completely. Will have to catch up with Sullivan so he can clue me in.

PASSING THROUGH
They retired from the US Air Force and spent a bit of time here at Clark Air Base but they can't get Angeles City out of their blood. Welcome back Mike Shea (Ft. Walton, FL) and Wayne Rose (Ocean Beach, CA), two new members of the Knights of the Brown Ring (AH Club).

GENTLEMEN'S CLUB
Gentlemen, gentlemen, by all means be sure to take the time, when in town, to visit this Club. The Horse promises that you will enjoy yourself and the manager; English John will make sure that my promise is kept. It is located along Don Juico Ave (Perimeter Road) just beyond Stampede and Staggers. You have to climb a few stairs to the second floor but once seated, very comfortably, you will be entertained by some very friendly ladies that are not in the least bit shy; If you have been to the Club Rio or Jolly Frog the atmosphere is very similar but on a grander scale. The opportunity to engage a lady in conversation that would only take you a "short time" to complete is an added incentive for a visit as one does not always want to waste too much time in long conversations. During my visit I was fascinated to find that the manager has an interesting job that occupies a bit of his time. He works with the special effects crew on the Harry Potter films and has just completed work on Harry Potter 2 and, shortly, will be leaving to work on Harry Potter 3. The conversation with John was so interesting that I nearly forgot to pay attention to the ladies in attendance (Priscilla won't believe that, but it is true!) So, now you have multiple reasons for visiting the Gentlemen's Club and you may see this Horse there as well, talking to John, of course.
BELIEVE IT OR NOT
Her name is Monica, 35 years old (one for you guys looking for an older woman), single, no boyfriend and says she has no kids. Did I believe all that, not quite but then this is what she told me and she doesn't look bad for someone that age that has been around for a number of years. Monica works at the Gentlemen's Club but comes from Olongapo. I figured, what the hell, her story is a good one and I will publish her picture here so someone else can do the research/confirmation for me. If you want to write she gave the following address: Rossana F. Santos, 1687 Dominguez St., Sta. Rita, Balic-Balic, Olongapo City, Philippines (don't ask me to explain the different name - I did not ask because I figured the explanation would be too long).

SLOW BUSINESS - INNOVATIVE IDEAS
Kokomo's is making some changes to try to attract what little business remains in Angeles these days. The first promotion is linked to the bars. When you drink in any of Mo's bars you receive a coupon with the total spent. You then receive a discount of up to 25% on any food and beverage purchase at Kokomo's. If you aren't a bar person, he's implementing a drawing. When you receive your bill you draw a ticket for a discount on
your entire meal. The discounts range from between 10% and 40%. Let's see, if I go bar hopping one night and get 25% then take Priscilla out for dinner and get a 40% discount does that mean Mo will gve me a meal for 65% off?
KALINTAW
I not sure that a Filipino martial art demonstration is the appropriate entertainment for an opening of a club featuring a "wet butt" contest, but what the hell, to each his own. Kalintaw is a form of ancient and authentic Filipino martial arts that originated around the year 500 AD. It combines all types of martial arts. It uses hand-to-hand combat, Filipino stick fighting, Filipino bladed fighting, Filipino grappling, kicking and punching.
I was impressed with the figure of Master Galo Dalusung Lalic who, despite his graying hair, looked like he could do some serious butt kicking, wet or dry! If you have a desire to turn your child into a killing machine so disciplining him/her for misconduct could be dangerous, then be advised that Mr. Lalic provides private home lessons for P500 per hour. He can be contacted by calling 045-892-0065.

ENIGMA
A few months ago I recommended the computer store Enigma as a good place to shop. Because of my article some folks did shop there and one customer, Tom Deasy (Duck) bought 7 computers for his business. Tom reported to me that he was very disappointed as nearly every one of the computers developed problems and he was less than happy with the attitude of the manager. Tom has vowed to bypass Enigma when purchasing computers and will return to Manila shopping. I write this because I cover both positive and negative comments, especially about places that I have gone out and recommended. I would think that the purchase of 7 computers would warrant some very positive actions on the part of a manager/owner of any store and I would still recommend Enigma with its lower prices but make sure your big purchase items are fully guaranteed and checked out before leaving the store.
A VERY GOOD DEAL
A couple of weeks ago I dropped in to Margarita Station (Yes John, it has been a while) and while enjoying a drink and conversation with Mort I met Lynn Voyles who told me about his new business, Pro Recharger, that handles all inkjet refilling needs. This interested me as my Hewlett Packard Deskjet printer uses cartridges that cost 1400 pesos plus to fill. What I did not know is that my black ink jet cartridge would run dry that very night. This presented me with the opportunity to personally check out Lynn's business to see if it lived up to his performance claims. Believe me, it did. Instead of having to spend P1450 for a new cartridge Lynn's assistant filled my cartridge while I waited, tested it, worked on it a bit more, tested it again and by golly, it was as good as new and only cost me P380. I was told that a cartridge could be filled 4 to 5 times before a new one had to be purchased; this my friends, is a real money saver! His store is located at 802-B Malabanas Road, close to the Phoenix Hotel, across from Sunset Garden Hotel, telephone 892-0302, E-mail: lynnvoyles@digetelone.com.

OVERHEARD AT THE HANG OUT
The Galleon rehabilitation is a dead issue. Larry, Sullo, is this true?
Mork porked Mrs. Mindy and knew what he was doing (To be continued).
Kimberly Clark is coming to Angeles (yep, I need this one explained to me).
Bruce McTavish agreed with Mark Smith twice on 25 Jun.
Heard that the G-Spot and Cleopatra ladies got into a serious brawl and it was not scheduled entertainment. Might be a good idea for Saturday night fights!
Jimmy Walker, clean and sober is back in town working at Cotton Tails - Welcome back Jim.
Heard that Shanno's Bar and the Biz-Net Center may be closing by the end of the month due to lack of business.
MOVING ON
Lewie's Blue K bar is on the move. The new location will be at the City Terminal Building at the Checkpoint (where Domino's Pizza is located). Economics dictated this action as the rent will be half of what is being paid now and the location should attract more business. A full kitchen will be available and that will allow for the Blue K to offer a larger selection of food. The big project was filling in the deep pit to make the floor level with the rest of the building. I liked the original building but word from management is that the quality and space will be the same and along with the pool table two dartboards will be available.

WHERE IS MIKE?
Mike Gimm has disappeared and a few folks are looking for him. His departure would not be such a concern if he did not take approximately $50,000 (US) belonging to others. He not only skipped with about $15,000 belonging to widows but clipped Cliff Wilsey and Ron Smith out of a bit of cash as well. Maybe he plans to return with money in hand some day but right now, he is not everyone's favorite person. If he does show up it would behoove him to have a very plausible explanation for his disappearance.
YOU THINK YOU'RE HAVING A BAD DAY?
So, you think you are having a bad day because your gout is acting up, you have a headache, you have a hangover, your arthritis is causing pain, your wife discovered lipstick on your shirt, whatever, you are miserable; believe me, your day is not that bad at all! If you want to meet someone that has a bad day, EVERYDAY, but still greets you with a smile, is upbeat and is just one damn nice person, drop over to Three J's, in Villa Sol and enjoy a few minutes with Jim Farley. Jim is a fixture in this town and his place draws a large ex-pat crowd every day of the week, just like the Hangout, only a different group, but just as loyal. While talking to Jim, I found out that his kidneys are shot all to hell and he has dialysis treatment three days a week at AUF, has Hepatitis C, and also has stomach cancer. This man lives with severe pain every day of the week yet when talking to him you would never know that he REALLY is having a bad day. He told me that his doctor at AUF told him that he could be a good subject for three different subject matters at the Medical College. Jim maintains his sense of humor and greets each day with an optimism that many do not possess and is an inspiration for many of the folks living here and believe me, he is for me. Lately my arthritic knees just don't seem to be that worrisome!
I WANT YOUR E-MAILS!
At a recent Rotary meeting the guest speaker was Patrolman Senior Superintendent (PSSupt) Pacia who is now the headman at the Angeles City Police Office and the theme of his presentation was "taking care of the people" with security and crime prevention his top priorities. In talking with this dedicated police officer he admitted that he was aware that the foreign community, in general, does not have the utmost confidence in the police in this area and hesitate or neglect completely to report crimes or complaints about the police. Supt. Pacia said that without those complaints or reports of wrongdoing, it would be difficult to weed out the bad apples and improve the reputation of the local police. He is hopeful, that during his tenure, a more positive picture will be developed and cooperation between the police and the community will improve. To aid in this endeavor Supt. Pacia has provided an E-mail address that can be used by anyone voicing legitimate complaints/problems (angeles(underscore)police@yahoo.com); Supt. Pacia reads these E-mails and one's privacy is recognized. It was brought to his attention that there is a serious problem in the Santa Maria subdivision where numerous attacks against foreigners/locals have been taking place. He made note of this and hopefully improvements in security will be seen in this area. He advised that crimes against property has increased 20-30 percent (drug related) but now the death penalty will be imposed for possession of 50 grams of shabu where before it was 200 grams.
BEWARE THE ICE PICK
In late May an American was attacked and stabbed with an ice pick as he was walking along Tinio Street (a side street off of Teodoro Street, Santa Maria Subdivision) at 9:15 PM. Because of the construction and mess on Fields Ave this was a convenient short cut to his desired location, Mid-night Rodeo on Real Street. This street is quite dark at night but it is a lot earlier than the after mid-night warnings I have been giving to people traversing that area. While walking he had two Filipino lads come up on both sides of him and when he turned to look one of them stabbed him with an ice pick and he yelled out of them in Tagalog. This made them hesitate and he was able to run to the lighted street near Efren's Air-conditioning Shop. He was able to get to the Emergency room of Angeles University Hospital where he was treated and released. His recovery was not immediate and a week of recuperation was required. This was a scary incident folks and it reinforces my warnings to stay away from walking in the Santa Maria subdivision area after dark. These two lads did not try to rob their victim and that leads him to think that maybe it was a gang related initiation ritual. Who knows, what is known is that this is not the first incident, and no doubt, not the last. I did not mention this in last month's column as there were conflicting stories going around and I waited until I could interview the victim. Let us hope that PSSupt Pacia and Major Arnold Gunnacao can take some positive steps to rid this area of gang activity.
AMERICAN SERVICEMEN RETIREES
Last month an American military retiree became seriously ill and required hospitalization in Manila. St. Lukes hospital turned him away when he could not come up with immediate cash as a deposit. He was finally admitted to the Lung Center after filling out paperwork and promissory notes and just in time, as he had to undergo a 7-hour operation to relieve a life threatening condition. I mention this because any American service retiree deciding to live permanently in this area would be wise to look into the medical plans offered by Health Visions and CyberCare. These companies cover medical costs under the TriCare Program and there should be no need for a retiree to be turned away for medical care due to lack of funds. Even retirees over 65 are covered and Health Visions is building a two-story hospital in Angeles to go along with the one in Olongapo. The other expats in town would love to have similar coverage to give them peace of mind but their countries do not offer such benefits here. I am not endorsing either of these companies as I can only suggest that one would be wise to look into what they have to offer and then decide on a course of action. Whatever decision is made, remember, one's life could be at stake as the hospitals here want cash up front if no insurance is available.
STILL IN JAIL
Regretfully, Gary Stone and Fawaz Cozma remain in jail in Bicutan, Rizal, not a very pleasant place to reside. Sources have informed me that Gary has had opportunities to reach settlement but a reluctance to part with the rather large sums of cash necessary to achieve this and his rather strongly stated comments to various personnel appears to have afforded him the opportunity to remain a government guest a bit longer.
Cozma has been retained for more than two months now and this is a rather sad situation that is met with much sympathy by the many ex-pats that know this man. It is true that his TV exposure in April displayed a behavior that most foreigners to this country would rather hold in abeyance but to be held this long in sordid conditions is punishment far greater than the offense. The acting Syrian Vice Counsel and the two Syrians with him are free and only Cozma, because he is a permanent resident is made to suffer. So far, he has spent all his savings, amounting to more than one million pesos and has gotten nowhere in his bid for release from prison. His family, living in Mabalacat, is suffering for now the only income is that obtained by his wife who is a schoolteacher and must send two children to high school as well as maintain a household. Appeals from the Syrian Embassy have fallen on deaf ears as the ABS-CBN TV Company refuses to drop charges. If a Filipino were to be treated this way in the United States there would be uproar from officials in this country.
So, you have had the John Martin case (eventually acquitted), Wes Prentice case (eventually acquitted after one year in jail and costing him 4 million pesos plus), Gary Stone and Fawaz Cozma plus the many others being held for various charges that we do not hear about. It is the risk that foreigners choosing to live in the Philippines face, be they investors, tourists, or permanent residents who have fallen in love with this country but realize that they do not really have the legal rights necessary to make them feel secure. There are thousands of foreigners happily living here who are pleased to have made their home in a location that has many benefits and so much beauty but pray that they are able to keep out of any legal problems that could cost them their life's savings or even their life. John and Wes have not given up on the Philippines, despite their experiences because once a foreigner has lived in this country for a number of years, it gets in their blood and having to leave is an option they would rather not have to face. Let us hope that the ABS-CBN Station owners will show the forgiveness and kindness that Mr. Gordon likes to promote to the rest of the world when he speaks of the friendliness one can expect when visiting this country. Forgive a man his mistake and let him leave confinement a much wiser person so that he can return to the womb of his loving Philippine family. Is this asking too much?
LAS VEGAS HOTEL CLOSED
The board of Directors for the Vegas International Hotel, Inc., has put out a "To Whom It May Concern" explanation for the reason behind the closure of this Hotel. It is a bit long but worthy of a read if you are interested.
"This decision has been taken by the Board of Directors and Stockholders following irreconcilable problems over the lease contract with the owners.
In particular, major structural faults and defects left by the former owner, builder, who did not act in good faith after taking our money in advance and failing to complete the hotel properly and agreeing to reimburse our expenses for rectifications costing now over P1 million. In addition, they have refused to act in good faith and in the spirit of the option clause for a further five ears, now wanting an absolutely exorbitant and ridiculous amount of P150, 000 per month to renew the contract presumably because they think the Airport will open or some other silly foreigner will pay their insane price. Of course every business in this town is suffering badly following the political events of year 2000 in the Philippines, i.e., bombings, kidnappings, impeachment and riots in Manila. The tragic events of September 11, 2001 in New York have of course scared the daylights out of tourists intending to fly overseas, killing off any hope of tourism revival for 2001/2002 in Angeles City.
In addition, now the US military has of course placed an indefinite ban on travel to some parts of the Philippines even though most of us know Angeles/Subic are still safe destinations for tourists. Taking all these factors in to account coupled with soaring overhead and fixed costs and a hostile relationship with the new lessor already in court, where we are suing them, stockholders of this company have decided to terminate this lease, keeping our powder dry for the right opportunity to develop our new Dreamland Hotel in Olongapo City."
Note: Wes will be keeping his office at the old Rumours Bar location along with the massage service. Additionally he is constructing a steak house out front that will be covered and enclosed with screen serving first class steaks, red/white wine and P20 beer. This will be open in early July.
ARIZONA INT'L HOTEL
Being in jail for one year might have slowed Wes down but now he is picking up a full head of steam and bouncing back with the opening of the Arizona International Hotel in Barrio Baretto right on Subic Bay. It will be fully operational by 15 Jul and reservations can be made by calling 63-45-892-6884. Deluxe rooms $13.50, superior deluxe $19.50 and family room P3, 000 per night (family rooms have bathtubs). There is a telephone in every room, solar hot water system, two deep wells and an emergency generator to cope with the brownouts. There are 28 rooms (a/c) with 25" flat screen TV in each room. You will be able to access the private beach directly from the hotel. Security parking for 16 cars will be available and future plans call for a patio bar & bistro planned for the upstairs area.
BODY PAINTING
Kokomo's had another body painting contest in June but it was nearly cancelled out of lack of interest. There was not much advance notice and by the time I left at 1:30 PM there were 21 paid attendees, of which I was one (yes, Dave made me pay but I ate enough of the Mongolian Bar-B-Q to make it worth my while). I did notice some rather interesting designs being painted on the ladies by the customers and a group of Japanese were really enjoying their first try at painting bare breasted, lovely ladies.
Mark out and Bob Pope in as a consultant for special events coordination for the Kokomo's Group.
Splash being renovated and will feature an under cover patio bar. The existing front wall will be moved back 30 feet. Look for a 1 Sep opening.

A FATHER'S DELIGHT
Now I know these are not the type of ladies I usually feature here but on Father's Day when Priscilla treated me to Mongolian at the Holiday Inn, upon entering the hotel, we spotted these two little lasses. They are twins and were so cute that I had to take their picture and you will notice that the one on the left must eat a bit more than her sister. OK, ok, I know, I was sentimental on Father's Day!

Food was provided Roy's Bar (plentiful and delicious) and a calf roasted on a spit was the featured gourmet delicacy (Damn better than Sushi). Jeff is from Zone 3, Mt. Roskill Barrio in New Zealand, which is not important, but it sounds more interesting than Astoria LI, New York!

BAYANIHAN PARK
The Clark Development Corporation (CDC) gave notices to the occupants of ILLEGAL business establishments at the Bayanihan Park to vacate on or before Monday, 24 Jun. The plan is to develop a world-class park for the general public and this cannot be accomplished as long as the unsightly mess of structures along Fields Ave remains. Naturally, as is common practice in the Philippines, an organization representing those affected massed for a protest at the main gate of the Clark Special Economic Zone to announce that they were ready to resist any attempt of CDC to implement its 30-day notice to vacate the area. Naturally they were citing benefits under the stupid Lina Law (Republic Act 7279) that entitles SQUATTERS to be relocated to a relocation site for their residences, disturbance compensation and livelihood support. The majority of the buildings in question is not used as residences but is put up by people living elsewhere who collect rent from the occupants. Once before, in the late 70's this area was bulldozed and cleared but it did not take long for the mess we are familiar with today to return. It amazes me that the people affected complain that CDC officials are rushing them to vacate because for over a year now they have been warned that the park will be developed and the buildings in question must be demolished. Let us hope that negotiations will result in a suitable solution to all parties and that the Bayanihan Park can, finally, become a real park and residents/visitors can finally feel safe when walking towards the Checkpoint at night (but don't expect success anytime too soon).
TREASURE ISLAND
Treasure Island is a nice small bar but lately they have been experiencing a few problems in that Duke has left as manager and Beeline John has been trying to fill the gap while Tom is out of town. It appears that some new policies instituted by John have caused some of the ladies to leave and now they need to rebuild the staff. It is difficult to coordinate policy when the owner is out of town but fortunately the trip is a short one and I am sure that when Tom returns the old Treasure Island image will be restored.
BAD BACK BLUES
Tony Perez, a long time resident of Angeles City who has occupied varied positions at different clubs around town is undergoing a very serious back operation on 3 Jul at the Angeles Medical Center (AMC) that will be costing him approximately P200, 000. At this time he has been able to put together P100, 000 but now finds the old savings account bone dry. There is a possibility that Richard may put together a special fund raising event at the Blue Nile or Nero's to try and make up the difference so keep an eye out for local announcements and give support by attending an event that I believe would be entertaining as well as helping out one of our own. Good luck Tony, any operation on the back is a bit dicey so hope all turns out well.

WET T-SHIRT CONTEST
Kokomo's is having a Fil-Am Friendship day on 6 Jul featuring, of course, a wet T-Shirt contest and pool party. With the way the heat is lingering being around a pool will be very inviting. One would think that more customers would show up in bathing suits to take advantage of the cool water and the Jacuzzi.
(Good place to put in a plug for the Blue Boar Inn's monthly meeting of the Knights of the Brown Ring (AH Club) starting at 12:30 PM).
Construction continues on the old Splash building and when opened it will be named Pattayaland. Local drinks will be P25, ladies drinks of P70 and two quiet rooms will be available for those desiring to escape the noise. The "take-out" procedures used in Thailand will be applicable here and that will no doubt be a debatable issue on the various message boards.

AIDS SCARE GRIPS ANGELES RED-LIGHT DISTRICT
This was a headline in the 14 Jun Philippine Daily Inquirer along with stories in the 14 and 18 Jun Sun Star Pampanga paper that had many folks thinking that there was a serious Aids problem in Angeles City. Believe me, this cannot be further from the truth. There IS NOT an Aids outbreak in this town. It is true that employees of bars are being tested for Aids but this is in line with the Health Departments semi-yearly scheduled random testing for Aids in their prevention program.
This "scare" started when it was reported that an American national, Roy Henry Coleman, from Oklahoma, a known positive HIV virus carrier, staying at a local Hotel just off of Fields Ave was reported to have slept with up to eight women in this town. This is not true! My sources inform me that he did sleep with one girl, his long time girlfriend of two or more years and that she knew of Roy's condition and used protection when engaged in sexual activities. There was another girl with them as well, a friend of his girlfriend but I do not know if she was a sexual partner as well.
My source indicated that Mr. Coleman was on a Bureau of Immigration (BID) watch list, his presence known and he was under observation while in Angeles City. Mr. Coleman was "invited" to depart the country and local police kept an eye on him until the door of the plane closed and he was on his way out of the Philippines.
I am writing about this now because rumors continue to circulate around town about ladies being tested and found to be HIV positive and that many people here are receiving queries from friends planning to visit this location but are wary to do so. It is time to lay these rumors to rest and believe me, it is business as usual at this time. As always, the use of condoms is strongly recommended during sexual encounters but remember, the ladies employed in the entertainment district are tested every week and there is no reason for anyone to put off a trip to this area. There may be a few bumps in the road here but most of those are caused by the excessive use of speed bumps that drive local motorists up the wall so get over here for the openings of the Cambodia Club, reopening of Cleopatra (1 Jul), and a few other yet to be named clubs between now and the end of the year. One request though, if you are HIV positive, please take your vacations elsewhere - there are too many temptations here!
Time to move on out of here. Next month I will be able tell you about one of our landmark hotels that has been sold and introduce you to the new owners. I keep hearing that the Oasis is up for sale so will have to trot over there for confirmation/denial. Just received last minute news that the Ayer's Rock restaurant will be open again but no date has been set. Have been informed that the Galleon is not necessarily a "dead issue" but only on hold for now. Remember, Angeles City is the place to be but bring your bathing suits as the hot weather is refusing to leave us and the rainy season appears to be on hold. This horse enjoys a drink or two in this heat, so remember, be kind to horses!
